At the beginning the whole story sounded a bit "fishy" to me, although I didn't say anything since there was not evidence. I think Laflor deserves an apology from some people here.
And another note: for "spirits" I go visit my local voodoo doctor, or better yet, go to my local bar. No spirits in IS. It's just a business, nothing more, nothing less.

And the $4 per download seems a bit high. I thought I remember seeing stats averaging closer to $2 or $3 at most.
I averaged about $2.80 per DL as a Silver. I would have to think that a Diamond producing images with a higher than normal rate of EL sales would push $4. Having not been on that level, it's just a guess.
Same here. 2.80 at 25%

Staying at 25% Hope the targets will remain the same for 2011 so we reach 30% faster then expected.

Sorry I am not taking the survey this year because I became exclusive to IS in the middle of the year. My stats are likely not useful to paint a general picture.
Why not? Sure they are!

Hi aeonf,
There was a time in our countries history that employers were able to pay whatever they liked to their workers and people worked like crazy, from children to over age adults. We changed that with minimum wage, Unions and child labor laws, this helped create and support the middle class. The worker does and should have rights. I do agree 100%, if you don't want to shoot for Istock then don't but as far as being a smart motivating business plan that is another subject. When Macro RF came on the scene they started at 20% ( a number literally pulled from the air ) when RM was at 40-50%. How were these companies able to make money by offering their photographers 50%? The did, as a matter of fact Tony Stone made their photographers very rich. To this day there are a few agencies still offering 50% to their photographers and they are still making a profit. I think if you keep your worker bees happy then they produce the best honey and work around the clock to support the hive. My two cents.
Best, Jonathan
I totaly agree. All I am saying is instead of a whole lot of people grunting and moaning all over the forums, they can make a bussiness decision just like IS has. no need to mix emotions here. IS put a fact in your face, you either take it or leave it. I (we) are exclusives at IS. do you think I am happy on how things are going and managed there ? no. its a joke. this is not how multi million companies run. it quite pathetic, but so is bitching about it day and night in forums. Does anybody here try and make a stand ? very very few. Who deleted his/her port ? practicly no one (and I dont mean 10$ a month ports or non selling photos). You gave a good history leasson here, its in our best collective intrest to create a union. 100 or even 1,000 people pulling their ports wont change a thing. 10,000 people just might! what are the chances of this happening ? I would say slim but it's more like none. I know I would be happy to pay my yearly dues to such a union. And sorry in advance for all spelling and grammer mistakes, I do try

From a bussiness point of view ? actually it is. IS goal is to give the minimum royalty possible, without decreasing there profits. And since when life is fair? my GF father died of cancer 3 months ago (her mom did 10 years ago already), is that fair ? not really.
Wow, what a compelling argument. You went to Harvard, didn't you? BTW...just wanted to point out the difference between there, their, and they're. And "salery" is spelled "salary." I lost my father to cancer, and as far as I can tell, it had little to do with iStock.
Forgive me for my spelling mistakes, English is not my native language.

Interesting and nicely consistent. Is that RPI per month? I'm guessing it is. Which would mean that your type of material and the sites you sell on, you get about $1.20 a picture, on average per year? Nice.
I believe he said it was .11 a DAY. Which is quite outstanding IMO. That equals out to $40.15 per image per year. With, say, 5k images, he would be making over 200k annually. That would probably put him among the very top elites in the country.
Yeah, I measure monthly RPI and that's around $3.30 RPI per month which has got to be at the high end of the performance scale.
VERY high indeed.

It ain't a cut for everyone... And a personal note: I think the new system is fair for all parties.
In other words you did not take a pay cut, so it is obviously fair for all parties. We've actually found the first exclusive who believes 15% for independents is a fair deal. May I sell you a bridge?
From a bussiness point of view ? actually it is. IS goal is to give the minimum royalty possible, without decreasing there profits. And since when life is fair? my GF father died of cancer 3 months ago (her mom did 10 years ago already), is that fair ? not really. Everyone is way to emotional on this matter. IS is a bussiness and they made a bussiness decision, all you have left is to make yours. if your boss in would decrease your salery by 25% would you go to a shrink ? no, you would either take the cut or getter another job. As simple as that. I can bet 90% of contributors won't do a thing. The solution BTW is simple, not that it will ever happend, but as suggested here before to create a union and organize a strike.

I am staying exclusive at Istockphoto for the foreseeable future because....I lose my crown and lose an instant 14% commission.I also lose best match placement on 1600+ photograpghs. So presume i take that hit and start uploading those 1600 files to another 4/6 microstock sites. How long would that exercise take and is there any real guarantee that my work would do as well with such a saturated microstock market. "Better the devil you know...."

It's my belief that if your RPI is falling, you're doing something wrong, and no one has been able to convince me otherwise since I have a ton of data that doesn't lie.
I guess you two are different from everyone else here because for three years I've been reading how more photos doesn't mean more money per image and RPI drops. There's no direct relationship 1:1 between number of images and income from those images.
Unless you are saying all the rest of those people aren't telling the truth?
Which is it?
Option #3. We are all doing something wrong
And my mistake is trying to point out that RPI is a vague nearly useless statistic. I should just STFU and leave it alone. Kind of like pointing out that aliens don't fly light years across space, just so they can find a poor farmer, and tell him the secrets of the universe and how they have come to save mankind. They can defeat science and psysics but can't drop a calling card on the White House lawn or send someone to speak to the UN? LOL
Anyone who watches sports betting or any gambling, knows that some people watch the "trends" for an indication of the future. Trends in football only tell what has happened and 99% of the time don't predict what will happen in the future. Watch a roulette wheel, it comes up 14 times in a row on Red, what are the chances the next time it will be Black or Red. Well, the same as every other spin, because the wheel doesn't know what color came up last, only us humans do!
RPI only measures what has passed, what happened last month or last year, and not only do demands change, but the prices and commissions change and so do the markets. RPI doesn't account for any of that.
Now you know why I feel the way I do about RPI. It's nice to know, it's a way to measure sales and success and see how the hard work is paying off. In a very broad sense, it does show earnings and can project potential for the future, but after one months data, the RPI doesn't change in any significant way or show something interesting?
RPI drops as someone works harder, and it makes the returns look like they are diminishing based on more and more work or effort put in. When in fact, income is going up, while the RPI goes down! I might as well track how my sales are, based on the day of the week the photo was taken. There's bound to be some useless statistic I can come up with, like Sundays are best, but using that information doesn't produce more sales or do anything. It just measures what has already happened. If I shoot more on Sunday, because it's the best day for earnings, then other days will start to improve. Silly as it seems, the best way to improve RPI is delete old non-selling images!
I think this argument is futile. No where did I say my goal is to up my RPI. Its just one of the statistical tools I use to try and give a bussiness forecast of our project. The buttom line goal is obviusly to make more income with the least expenses. If you dont find it helpfull by all means, don't use it! For me its just another line in my excel sheet.

At nruboc: but I never said I'm unhappy with my income (which you seem to be convinced is well below what it is, so I suspect you're extrapolating quite inaccurately on my dls:files ratio). I'm not comparing myself to Lisa or yuri-that wasn't remotely my point. I will never complain about my work. I get to make a living doing what I love. I don't know why you're suggesting I complained about my income. YOU complained about my income.
And dude, we live in a major urban centre in Canada. Cost of living isn't low.
Again, everything is relative. Where I live 2 (1 bedroom) room appt would cost you over 1,200$ . cost of living in Canada IS low...

So from what I understand some of the other sites not only pay less then IS but also have no transparency what so ever... Why does everybody flame IS night and day but not the others

And be aware, as also mentioned, that as an exclusive, you're not permitted to sell rejected content elsewhere, even as RM, without permission.
As far as I know, you are !

No they don't, they do help you decide what to shoot, how much to invest in it (and gear) and make future predictions. For example I know what I will reach my break-even point, how many photos are needed for that etc' etc'.
So if you have 1000 photos and make $1500 then you can calculate that if you have 2000 photos (based on rpi or rpd or some other fantasy number) you are going to make $3000? (hypothetical numbers for an example)
Then you are amazing, because it seems no one else can calculate that? There's no direct relationship between the number of images and sales, from what I've been reading? In fact I just read where someone has about 200 photos and makes over $300 a month, and another person uploads 1000 photos a year (has 3000 online now across multiple agencies) and makes under $500 a month.
If RPI was anything more than a measure of what has happened, and had anything to do with predicting the future, I'd be all for it. But all that stat does is tell me what has happened. It's like a weather man telling us if rained 15 days last month, which has nothing to do with what will happen tomorrow. Maybe a little, but it's all after the fact. That and the problem that RPI doesn't coincide with the number of images, 1 for 1.
What you pointed out that does make much more sense is What is selling and how many times that image or that type of image has sold. That's important and meaningful. RPI is nearly usless because it doesn't take into consider "What Image Was It".
I don't know about other peoples statistics. regarding ours, yes they make things very predictable and our data is consistant the more data you have (portfolio size for example) the more acurate it will be.

Honestly without the figures from all sales on IS, I won't be able to answer accurately until about mid-month. From past experience, I will add that nothing has changed. Boring and consistent throughout the year.
50/50 SS and IS earnings. Earnings are what I count, not letters and statistics.
SS averages 25c per download, IS averages $1.50 per download. The assumption is, that will be changing downward for IS, in 2011.
If I wanted to increased my RPD or DPI or RPI or, make up some letters here, I could just remove the non-selling shots and make it look much better. Any statistic that I can manipulate, isn't worth watching or tracking. Bottom line is the bottom line. How much did they collect for me last month? Statistics don't put gas in the car or food on the table.
No they don't, they do help you decide what to shoot, how much to invest in it (and gear) and make future predictions. For example I know what I will reach my break-even point, how many photos are needed for that etc' etc'.

Perfectly legal. many people do exactly what you said. You can stay exclusive as well. main rule: You can sell RM where ever you want. You can't sell RF anywhere.

is less then 2% of my monthly income. So you earn about $300,000 per year or thereabouts, yet you're still messing about uploading images? Why?
No, that is +- my income, not profit (I wish...) I don't upload anything. I don't even know how to hold a camera. My partner does though

listen, the more other contributors take off, the more of the pie there is for the rest of us.
...or not. The constantly declining downloads aren't just because there are too many contributors.
How do you know that ?

Let me quote "Juanmonino" . he got it right: Everybody here have to realize this is pure business, business and business. When Bruce sold IS, the community was over, there is no more community here. This is about money. We have to accept it.
They can take arbitrary measures, introduce new collections with files from people that used to despise Istock, put their files way in front of the ones that built this site, they can embrace "exciting" new projects, directed only and only to make more profits.
And they have the right to do that, they bought the company, they paid the price, they took the risk, this is not the red cross
Since we "crossed the river" things changed for ever here, maybe until the do the IPO, who knows... But they are not the ones that have to take the blame, they are doing what they supposed to do, make money for the ones that pay them...the stockholders. They are doing what they have to do. And we should do what we have to do... take it or leave it, or live with it (my case)
If you want to blame someone, blame Bruce... he sold the community for a price (and I dont personally blame him either, I would probably did the same)

... Is december suppost to be a good or bad month because of Xmas / years end ?
Rather depends upon your portfolio and the seasonal image content. Historically for me (but not this year) December is the second best earner (November is best, followed by December or October and then September or March - that has varied).
As I'm an IS exclusive, their idiotic decision to roll out a broken search engine in early December hurt the month's sales. It was marginally up over December 09, but was the 7th best month of 2010, not the 2nd as I'd have expected.
Overall for 2010, income was up 72% and downloads up 6.5%, so it was a good year
Thank you for your input. we indeed had 2nd BME and Nov was our BME so your data is consistent with ours. (for your "normal" years)

I'll be sticking on 30%, but as I'm within 400 dls of turning gold, it will soon be falling from what I should have expected.
About the same for me and I missed the Gold level by less than 10% or the needed RCs.
Don't forget all exclusives lose on ELs and Vetta.
Ouch. A shame indeed. We missed the 30% mark by ~2000 RC's Regarding the vetta, with the price incease you should be making more or the same, no ?
