Great tool Leaf! I can forsee using both tools together - save one set of selected words to the first box on your comparison tool, then search again under different yet related keywords to develop a second set of key words and add that to the second box to compare and create a final list ready for any fine-tuning as necessary to fit the specific image.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock is having a sale« on: May 24, 2011, 08:44 »
@dreamframer - I was refering to the items that were not on sale, as opposed to those that are bottom of the barrel and never sell anyway. Supermarkets constantly have something on sale - it brings feet in the door to pick up the sale item, but while they are there customers pick up items at full price too. If IS can get more feet in the door then they may get sales on the "sale" items, but may also get those same buyers picking up additional items that are not on sale - video, audio, smaller files, etc. Bring them in the door with the sale then load up the cart with everything. We can only hope....

Each sale means that an item does not sell enough, or a company needs a little extra money for something. There are also promotional sales which are usually organized in the beginning of a business, to attract more customers for a better take-off. There is also the theory that getting feet in the door will result in the purchase of non-sale items too, or bring in shoppers that might have otherwise shopped the competition. 555

I found one of my images there last month and contacted Fotolia customer support about it. They got back to me in about 3 days and confirmed it was one of their API partners but they didn't give any detail beyond that.

Eye level yes, but not the top shelf for supermarkets - that's above most people's easy reach so it's not prime real estate. Let's hope their not using a supermarket model because if that's the case they will start charging "slotting fees" for premium location and space in the best match just like the supermarkets charge for shelf location. 557

You can get a basic 11 oz. white mug with your photos at www.snapfish.com for $9.99. They have a lot of promotions - www.retailmenot.com tends to list a lot of coupons for them - try a search there for Snapfish coupons. They had a 33% off mugs coupon in March, and they have one posted now for 20% off your entire order, and another for 11% off plus free shipping.

One minute (literally one minute, maybe less) spent throwing the card on the table, take a shot, set the WB and every shot is spot on - I don't have to spend any time playing with white balance in post processing. I'm not seeing any of the rejection problems a lot of others are complaining about so I must be doing something right. Sorry I offended you by having an opinion and fewer sales then you deem worthy. I'm too new at this to have comparisons to previous years, but my DL trend has been odd nevertheless. 1, maybe two DL's on any given day, with a handful of zeros is typical and to be expected with just under 100 photos online. Slow start to April - no DL's until on on the 4th, so imagine my surprise to find SIX DL's on Tuesday. Back to zeros until a few DL's today. I attribute it to whatever is happening with the search and best match changes.

I managed to survive with a variety of creative jobs and the skills I learned have helped in microstock, so where there's a will there's a way - she may find a way to turn it into a career. ETA, regarding the OP: I got accepted at IS right about the time they announced the cut. It was pretty deflating to have finally been accepted after a few rounds of getting that third photo accepted, only to see all the negative comments. I was already on Shutterstock, Fotolia and Dreamstime and after finding this group I started adding to some of the middle tier and low earner sites. I'm on 3 of the middle tier and 5 of the low earner sites now in addition to the top 4. My business plan is to upload to all, and at the end of the year make some assesments as to who's worth continuing in 2012 and who gets dropped. Right now, Shutterstock followed by IS are the top earners with Fotolia and Dreamstime staying rather flat other than an occasional "up" month. Overall, the small size of my portfolio makes it tough to compete, but it's growing every month. Bottom line on why I still up load to IS is that they are one of the premier sites in the eyes of the buyer, and the money they bring me is still better than most other options. They have some low-priced sales, but more high RPI than some of the others too, so overall it's been worthwhile. Their slow review times makes certain that my new content is available at other sites for as much as 2 weeks before they get it. We'll see what the end of the year brings - at that time I may decide to stop uploading. 565
Bigstock.com / Re: Sales at BS ???« on: March 31, 2011, 17:45 »
Same for me - I had a couple of sales after I started uploading in late October, but nothing since then. I also have a small portfolio - about a hundred pics. I'm actively trying to add as much as I can every month and I plan to give all the sites til the end of the year, then I'll determine which may not be worth continuing to upload. I figure I need a much bigger portfolio and some time on the site before I can really give it a fair assessment.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Return Per Download Survey« on: March 20, 2011, 17:03 »
IS is giving me the best average RPD, followed by DT and SS, but SS is the only one that gives me enough sales to see payout with my small portfolio. I'm hoping the others will pick up as I add more images this year, but right now it's slow going for all but SS as far as total DL's per month.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: The post call thread« on: March 18, 2011, 21:29 »... we're of the thought that something has been 'delivered' so we should keep our money. That's exactly my thinking - digital files were given to iStock for safe keeping and distribution. They distributed it and those supplying the images should be paid for the distribution. If iStock failed to get the payment that's their negligence and their burden to bear. It just seems so wrong that they hand out the goods without paying the creator of the goods - they retain a hefty fee for their services that should cover this. 568
Shutterstock.com / Re: How many downloads in a day?« on: March 18, 2011, 16:56 »
I finally passed the "100 images online" mark and I'm starting to see regular downloads - averaging 2.5 per day for this month with my highest DL days having 6 per day. Not alot, but good in comparison to past months.
I had a lot of Fall and Holiday images going into the start of this year and it's just been in the past 6 weeks that I've been able to take my portfolio from about 50 - 115 images with a stronger representation in season-neutral images. I'm optimistic about the future ![]() 569
General Stock Discussion / Re: Is anyone getting any work done?« on: March 15, 2011, 20:32 »
I've been motivated to shoot, just hindered by my "day" job that sucks up most of my time. I've been managing to upload regularly for the last several weeks to the point that I'm seeing some regular activity on a few of the sites and that's been encouraging me to shoot more, especially as I've been able to fine tune my sense of what works for stock a little bit more with each sale. Since I'm new at this I have a lot of ideas, a long list of things I want to shoot, just need the time to shoot and edit.
The drama and overall industry trends are a bit discouraging, but I'm seeing my skills improve and I'm envisioning a wide range of opportunities that could open up in the future. I may think differently a year from now, but at the moment the motivation is still there. 570
iStockPhoto.com / Re: istock organises conference call with selected few« on: March 13, 2011, 20:48 »iMHO, this is a very poorly conceived move on IS part. Any five contributors that are selected are going to be active contributors, contributors with large port. on IS and contributors that have lost thousands during the past frauds not including the losses incurred because of the poor management and non-functioning IT department. KKT's post said the chosen 5 would be the "Ears" of the community, not the voice, so there is a good chance they'll set the call up so that only the moderator can speak and everyone else will be on mute without even a chance of having any input. 571
iStockPhoto.com / Re: istock organises conference call with selected few« on: March 13, 2011, 14:57 »
Best comment so far IMO was the question asking how ISP was going to manage to tally the votes if they couldn't even manage to tally the last clawback.
Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but did anyone else notice that KKT's post was written at what looked to me to be about 4:30 AM in Calgary. Could't help but wonder if he's deservedly losing some sleep over what's been going on, though it could just be that he's not in Calgary, traveling, or had an auto-post programmed. 572
iStockPhoto.com / Re: istock organises conference call with selected few« on: March 13, 2011, 12:17 »I like Paul Cowan's suggestion that the five have a list of questions they can answer in advance of the meeting. Maybe we're better off having the conference call be with a team comprised of a lawyer, an accountant and a programmer that are not contributing to ISP as artists - a group of our choosing. Time to follow through with the union concept in that we form a group to hire the three that will sign the NDA but not be hindered in the forums. 573
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Jan/Feb fraud - reduction of royalties coming« on: March 13, 2011, 10:39 »The NDA will most likely be applied only to what is discussed at the meeting. The terms of the NDA are a critical point in this issue. In my day job we sign and have clients sign them regularly and they pertain to the project at hand, not disclosing proprietary information relating to materials, manufacturing process, ingredients and new products coming to market. It doesn't restrict either party from discussing publicly available information or information that is standard to the industry. If this NDA only restricts them from discussing the specifics of an investigation or new security measures, but does allow them to report that in their opinion they are statisfied with steps being taken and progress being made then it's a step in the right direction. Of course if they come back and say that they don't like what they heard then watch out ISP - it won't be good. 574
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Jan/Feb fraud - reduction of royalties coming« on: March 09, 2011, 18:59 »"We do not plan to do another mass pull of royalties like this again." I read that to mean that at the moment, they don't have plans to pull any because they are not seeing massive amounts of fraudulent downloads in late Feb or March so far, but I don't doubt for a moment that if they see large amounts of fraudulent downloads in the future they won't hesitate for a moment to revive that dormant plan and will pull back more royalties without a second thought. 575
Newbie Discussion / Re: how to prepare a picture for different sites?« on: March 05, 2011, 09:59 »
I prepare all of my photos the same way. I shoot in RAW, make my adjustments in Lightroom and if necessary I'll export to Photoshop Elements for more detailed fixes if necessary (ie: cloning out a logo or similar clean-up). Then I close the image which sends it back to Lightroom (I send it back as a TIFF file, no compression). Add keywords, title and description in LR (making sure I'm adding it to the edited image!) My acceptance rate has been good at the top 4 sites and several of the middle tier and low earner sites I'v been uploading to using that process.
What you may be experiencing is that some sites are more critical or lenient on technical quality. What's acceptable on one is rejected on another. The least amount of processing you can do with regard to exposure adjustments and sharpening should be the goal. Get it right in camera as much as possible. |
