Software / Re: How to shoot static timelapses« on: March 17, 2018, 12:15 »
Sure, you can get beautiful results with LRTimelapse, and in theory, retain more of the original quality since you're editing/grading at RAW level. But in practice, it's not that convenient and too slow for me. Not to mention the inconvenience of going back to change something...
I like to make a high quality movie file that is more like what comes out of a professional film camera, and grade it like you grade film. That way I can color grade and change colors very quickly a year later, or make different versions for different situations. It would be way too time consuming to have to go back and do it at the RAW image level every time. 553

Off Topic / Re: Annihilation on Netflix« on: March 15, 2018, 01:04 »Pressing CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+D while playing content will reveal some technical stuff, as well as the video resolution. The resolution depends on the browser. Maximum resolution in Chrome is 720p, but 1080p in Safari and IE, and 4k in Microsoft Edge. I get 1080p for Annihilation in Safari and 853x480 in Chrome, but that still doesn't fix the bad colors and dynamic range (blown out highlights). How are the highlights on your Netflix? I'm perfectly happy with movies in 1080p, but the colors can't be off... They can't expect to compete with piracy if their paid product is 10% of the quality... 557
Off Topic / Re: Annihilation on Netflix« on: March 13, 2018, 15:14 »There is no HDR on Netflix. Ah, nice, but this is just on my computer. No options for HDR. Could still be that they encoded an HDR copy by mistake though. 558
Off Topic / Re: Annihilation on Netflix« on: March 13, 2018, 14:51 »
It's the same in all browsers. And keep in mind, it's just this movie, not the others.
Clearly someone messed up big time and sent the wrong copy to Netflix, or they messed up encoding it. I have never seen changes this big with video in any browser, or any site. 559
Off Topic / Re: Annihilation on Netflix« on: March 13, 2018, 14:33 »
This is a special case as far as film releases are concerned. I think it might still be in cinemas in the US.
It was only released on Netflix outside the US (no cinema release), as the producers got nervous and thought it would flop. There is no HDR on Netflix. But maybe someone uploaded the wrong copy. Well, I'm quite convinced someone uploaded the wrong copy actually, but how could this happen... I'm just curious to know. ![]() 560
Off Topic / Re: Annihilation on Netflix« on: March 13, 2018, 14:11 »I think Netflix adapts the compression rate on the fly depending on your download speed at that moment, so if your internet connection is suffering, so will the image quality. No, that is 100%, beyond doubt, not the case, as: 1. This is not something compression would do. 2. I have a great 200mbit/sec connection. 3. Everything else on Netflix looks fine. But how does it look for you? 561

Wish I hadn't watched the bad copy. It really annoyed me and took away from the film.

I watched Annihilation on Netflix today, just released. The technical quality was quite bad, with overexposed skies and overall really bad dynamic range.
I watched the trailer (same browser), and it looked much better. Didn't have the same problems. What could have happened to the Netflix version? It's not a low budget film so I'm sure it doesn't really look like this. Anyone with Netflix care to take a look? I'm just curious to see how this could happen. By the way, other movies and TV shows look fine. 564

I'm guessing you want to show a checkered background in preview videos, correct?
Just use the Checkerboard effect or screenshot AE's internal placeholder background. For the real clip that customers download, don't include any checkerboards. 565

I wouldn't trust anyone with passwords and API keys.
It doesn't really matter if the people behind the app are trustworthy - all it takes is for them to be hacked and all your information is conveniently leaked in one easy move. I'm amazed at what people give out left and right. I guess you have to be hacked once or twice before you start taking this stuff seriously. ![]() And please don't use the same e-mail/password combination at several sites. It's every hacker's wet dream. 573
General - Stock Video / Re: Color correction advice. What do you think ?« on: March 07, 2018, 15:05 »
I think you managed to remove the magenta tint quite well.
It's also a bit hard to compare on a split screen like that (unless you mirror one side) - it's much easier if you can see the whole shot. We don't know if the left side is blown out in the original for example. I do see a bit of banding in the sky, which could just be YouTube compression, too much contrast, or both. Another little trick that makes something look professionally graded is that shadows and highlights are usually much less saturated than the midtones, so you need something that can split the saturation into three bands. 574
General - Stock Video / Re: Color correction advice. What do you think ?« on: March 07, 2018, 11:59 »
Yes, you definitely overdid it.
Keeping details in the highlights is usually something that separates a professional looking shot from a consumer/cheap looking shot. UNLESS, there is a person talking against a very bright background - then it would be OK. But here, the subject is the landscape. That's one of the main things that makes an expensive camera look expensive - the dynamic range/highlight roll-off in challenging situations. Since you have more details in the original shot, it will be an easy fix. If you want to get picky I would mask out the clouds/upper part and apply different grading there for a more professional looking shot. 575
VideoBlocks / Re: Sales have peaked a little over a year ago on VideoBlocks.« on: March 07, 2018, 02:36 »Nope. SS and P5's contents are increasing as well, but their sales are increasing too. One new clip at SS results in a $79 vs $79 competitor. One new clip in the VB membership section results in a $0 vs $49 competitor. Thus, a new clip in the membership section is a much stronger competitor for a customer, compared to a new clip in a marketplace. |
