Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock sales is sinking deeply...
« on: January 28, 2015, 07:33 »
Oh come on guys - my comment was not meant to spark a debate over which countries/cities and more expensive than others or, indeed, the reasons for that.

I will reiterate my point and simply state that falling Shutterstock sales can have a bigger impact on some people than others, and that can be relative to where you are based in the world.

A 50% drop on monthly sales of $100 will probably have less financial impact than a 30% drop on sales of $1000 a month. Similarly, that same 30% drop on $1000 will affect people differently, depending on the cost of living where they are based.

Regarding, whether this occupation should be for money or passion? Again, that depends on each contributors circumstances. If you have a talent and a passion, and use these to run a business, then surely this is an occupation that is both for the love and the money? It certainly is in my case, and I prefer to do this than flip burgers in McDonalds 40 hours a week for minimum wage, even though that may end up paying more per hour, if stock sales continue to sink. To state that you shouldn't be in this business for the money is somewhat simplistic and is, again, dependant on the individual circumstances.

My Shutterstock income for the last two months is down by about $650 on the same period last year - where I live, that's a months rent. So, to get back to the thread topic, my Shutterstock sales are sinking deeply.

I wish I had the answers as to why sales are sinking but, as is the case with everyone else, I can only speculate that search changes/global economy/saturated market, etc. etc. are to blame.

"Soon Shutterstock will only have artists from poorer countries, as the rest of us can't live on the income we receive, and will be forced to use our talents elsewhere."

+1000

they have been Farming those countries for a few years.

Poorer countries? I am from the Balkans and I can tell you that food/clothing prices are the same or higher than in the US. Yes, we have a crap but cheap healthcare system and housing/renting is much cheaper but the prices of the main commodities are getting more and more similar across the globe. The main difference is in wages.

I live in Canada, but was born in one of those "poorer countries". One of the cultural shocks I had to overcome is how much housing actually costs here. Food and clothing or even a car compared to your rent or mortgage is nothing. Most of your income is spent on having a roof above your head. So, count yourself lucky still - you don't have to work your behind off just to avoid sleeping under the bridge.

My comment was only intended to illustrate the fact that in some parts of the world, $1000 for example, is a substantial monthly income, whereas in other places, it won't even cover the rent.

December was $300 down on the previous December, January is some 700 downloads down on last January. In short, it is disastrous, and probably time to find a different job. These kinds of sudden losses are hard to deal with, when you rely on the income to pay the bills. One expects variations of maybe + or - 10-15% but my downloads/income this month will be down by approx 35% on Shutterstock.

Soon Shutterstock will only have artists from poorer countries, as the rest of us can't live on the income we receive, and will be forced to use our talents elsewhere.

Tickstock, I just voted your posts up again. We may not like it but certain licences from certain sites do allow this use.

Check where the images in question have sold from and whether or not you have had EL sales. You could politely ask the Cafepress seller to provide you with sight of the licences, then you will know for sure whether or not they are working within the terms.

558
Great, thanks everyone for clarifying and thanks Dreamstime for going about things the right way ;)

" WordPress users can link their Dreamstime account so they can have seamless access to commercial images, and the ability to use credits or subscriptions from their WordPress acount remotely."

Sounds like they're paying to use the images, no?

yeah, so why using the embed word and talking about credit lines?

That's what puzzled me as well. If it's all paid and above board, then great but the embedding and credit line comments would possibly suggest free use like the Getty giveaway. I'd just be glad of some official clarification.

560
I really hope this is being done the proper way, and that artists will be paid accordingly. A bit more information is required I think.

So images are to be 'free for non-commercial use' to bloggers, etc. So, if a blogger has links/click throughs/adverts on their blog, designed to earn them some sort of commission/income, would the use of an image be commercial or non-commercial?
Apparently that is allowed, and considered to be non commercial use.

Really? So the blogger can get paid, and it's non-commercial but the commercial photographer gets zip?

Hmmm, great business strategy...

Thanks Kelly, glad all is well :)

565
I hope that's not the case. It could just be an oversight that will be rectified first thing Monday  :)

Can't get in but apparently I can buy the Domain needs to be renewed.

That doesn't look good. :(

Hope it's just an oversight that will be rectified soon. I rather like GL Stock, and would hate to see them go down.

I've been crazy busy with non-stock commitments for the last few weeks, and haven't checked in here much. I have obviously missed a lot

Leo, firstly a thank-you for the huge effort you have put into this project. My site isn't developed yet - I got as far as buying my domain a few weeks back, and installing the themes, etc. but now need to actually personalise and populate the site. This project has given me the opportunity to not only have my own website, (as that could be done through various means), but to get some traffic from the networking side and some support from a community willing to assist, and to be part of a worthy and commendable project.

I take it that it is still worth me proceeding with developing my site? I haven't anything to give in return for technical support but, hopefully, another site can mean more traffic and sales for others? This is all very daunting for a complete novice!!

I sincerely hope that the community rallies round in all ways possible to keep this project alive and kicking. I don't know what I can do but I'm willing to muck in if asked :)

Happy to have you. With Symbiostock:

Don't panic, and never forget your towel.

See yall.

Thanks!

Not sure what the towel reference is but I will try not to panic ;)

The "towel" reference is Leo's sometimes unique sense of humor again.  It' a reference to something from Hithhikers Guide To The Galexy". It's said to be the most important thing an intergalactic hitchhiker can have with them for a number of reasons for a. Number of reasons. Wikipedia will enlighten you more is you care enough to search.

Ahhhh, I thought I was missing something. I'll take a look ;)

OK, Ron has posted while I was typing and obviously things have become heated and personal somewhere along the line. I haven't read what has happened but can confirm that I am one of the people who PMd Ron with some Symbio queries, and I certainly received a very thorough and positive response - it is on the strength of those emails that I actually took the plunge.

I hope that whatever has gone down can be amicably resolved after everyone has had the chance to sleep on it.

Ron, I think you will find that it is linked to your Depositphoto account. As far as I can figure, any Editorial images on DP are automatically transferred to their Clashot site.

Symbiostock - Hosting / Re: Where can I host my Symbiostock site?
« on: December 19, 2013, 06:48 »
I'm about to set up a Synology disk station for backup and storage. The unit also has website hosting capabilities, so I want to know if this would be Symbio compatible?

See here for information on how it works:http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/tutorials/480

Thanks

It lists WordPress as one of the tested apps, so that's a start :)

ImageMagick as the image processor isn't listed, but can't see any reason it wouldn't work.

I'd suggest you see if you can find reports of other users successfully operating WordPress sites on this platform (what you wouldn't want is a trail of reports that it sort of works but this or that plugin doesn't). If that looks good, why not give it a try and let us know what happens?

I am installing the system anyway, for backup and storage, so I may as well give it a try. I don't really have much of a clue how to go about tit, but I have nothing to lose by trying. I'll let you know if it works!

For playing around it might work and might be fun but isn't very practical in real world terms.  The benefits you receive from renting space form a web host is
- MUCH BETTER internet line.  Most internet connections don't have a very fast UP connection... down might be fast(ish) but up isn't very fast.  Even if it is fast, it isn't going to compare to what a proper web host would offer.
- Up time - most web hosts would have a 99.9% up time.  What happens when your power goes out, someone unplugs the server to do some vacuuming or it simply just crashes.
- Static IP ... not all ISP give out static ip's.  There are work arounds but they are a big pain.  If you have a dynamic IP address it will be a real head ache trying to host a server from your house
- Shared hosting is actually pretty smart.  A bunch of people are essentially getting together, buying a speedy server (a machine made especially for the task) and splitting the costs.
- +++ a few more arguments I haven't thought of...

Thanks Leaf for all your comments. I don't really know what I am doing, and it is a lot to take onboard but, as you say - it may be fun to play around and I will certainly learn from the experiment. I can always get my site set up and, if it's really difficult to  impossible to self-host, sign up with a hosting company some time down the line.

I'll let you know how I get along :)

I can't believe you all are uploading manually.. why aren't people using stocksubmitter?

Does using Stocksubmitter mean you don't need to put in categories? I use Stockuploader but still have to manually input the categories for each site, and therefore still have to go to the page in question on DT.

You still need to fill in categories but you can do it for 50 images all at once (providing they are all in the same categories). .. the same for model releases.  When submitting to several sites it is nice to have to only attach the releases once.  Then, when it uploads to the agencies you don't even have to visit the sites.. it automatically submits with categories, releases and all.

OK thanks - I will take a further look at it.
