iStockPhoto.com / Re: Layoffs at istock
« on: January 19, 2012, 14:54 »
Let's all take a deep breath here. I'd say we're in a "the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated" situation.

Yes, there are monumental changes happening in the offices of iStock.  And yes, JJRD's leaving is big news.  But even today, after the news broke, buyers are still buying.  How much will all of this "inside baseball" news affect sales today, tomorrow, next week, next month?  I'm guessing not much.

We're all assuming the current iStock leadership is incompetent and has no plan to take the business anywhere but down.  Recent missteps even validate this opinion.  But it still remains to be seen.

I am no iStock cheerleader.  I haven't uploaded there in quite some time.  But my sales for the past few weeks have been going up... not just a typical post-holiday rise, but they're back to where they were last Sept or Oct.  To me this means that most buyers are so disconnected to what's happening behind the scenes that the iStock management has a bit of time to coast and implement positive change before the business actually dies.  Will it happen?  Who knows... but it would be naive to write iStock's obituary today.

You may be right but IS images have averaged around $2.95 for me per download. SS for 11 downloads has only got me $2.75 so far. How can anyone say this is better than IS ?

Before you uploaded 300+ pics to SS you didn't look at what they pay per download? Hmmm....Anonymous people will say anything around here.  :-\

Microstock is a volume business.  If you really care about doing well you have to consider the return on your time invested.  I'm being a broken record here, but for me this is all about RPI.  Who cares if IS is giving you 2.95 per download and SS is 2.75 per download if SS is selling 10 times more of your images?  Here's what matters to me... I will spend an hour creating and uploading a new picture.  I want to know that this image will start earning me $.XX every day after that.  I don't care about whether it makes $2 per download on site X or $2.25 per download on site Y.  Those aren't numbers I can take to the bank.

Yes, I know the argument... we have to support the sites that pay us the highest RPD.  Then by all means, pull your ports from SS, DT, IS and FT and just sell on Graphic Leftovers which gives you 3.12 per download.  Not to pick on Graphic Leftovers... I love them, and have my full port there which does fairly well... I see from from 1 to 5 downloads on most days... But if I just uploaded to Graphic Leftovers my return on that time invested to create my pictures would not justify my investment.

For the record, my daily RPI started around 9 cents per day four years ago, and it's hovering around 11.5 cents per day today.

Those are incredible figures that could probably only be matched by the top 10 or so microstockers in the world. At those rates a medium-sized portfolio of 5000 images would be generating nearly $210K per annum.
My port is not quite that large, but I'm hoping to scale up to that point.

Are you vectors, photos or what?
Yes.  I try to dabble in everything... keeps my port varied.

Funny. I've never put much stock in RPI. I track it, but it's not a big deal to me if it is falling. As long as my income is rising. I make a lot of images that compete with each other, so it is only natural that my RPI would dip as my library grows. I also like to experiment, so not every image is a great seller. But, it may lead to something else. Possibly even freelance work.

I think we're actually in agreement here about repetition being something to keep in mind.  I also tend to make images that could compete with each other, though I try to keep it to a minimum when thinking of what to create.  I see creating redundant images as a negative if I want my income to rise, and RPI is the measurement I use to tell me if I'm competing with my own stuff.  If RPI dips, that's a sign that I'm just cannibalizing my own sales and I need to be more original.

I track RPD too. I think it's nice to get a feel for what sells on a site and for what size and price. Also, to track raises and cuts in royalties or price. I've really been monitoring my RPD at DT because I'm trying to get my levels up. I've actually been wondering if I could make more by deleting images. It's a strange thought, but I'm not sure that it's an unrealistic one.

I hear what you're saying about wanting to get levels up.  But I think it goes back to the RPI question, and creating images that don't compete with each other.  If you have ten images of, say, an elephant on a balloon, and they're each selling OK and are at level 1 or 2, wouldn't you be better off with just a few images like that, so you're not dividing your sales and the few you have on that subject are level 4 or 5 instead?  I think trying to keep RPI high, or at least steady, is being proactive in meeting that goal... while doing something like deleting images after the fact is reactive.  You would have been much better off devoting time to ten different subjects rather than 10 elephants on balls to begin with.   Watching RPD just seems like a reactive, rather than proactive, strategy to me.

Having great sales today - they can keep doing what they're doing. It works at least for me.

Haven't noticed a white screen all day...

No white screens for me either.  And sales have been pretty fantastic for the past several days.  Almost back to my BDE levels of early fall 2011.

« on: January 17, 2012, 14:52 »
To me it looks like they're reviewing in record time.  Some recent batches have been approved in under an hour lately.

582
I can't be bothered with what each site earns me per download.  I simply can't control that.

I track how much each image earns me, or Return Per Image (RPI).  And I track it in aggregate, rather than per individual image, which would be impossible at a high volume of sales per day.  I simply take the day's total and divide by number of images I have created.  (No, not every image is accepted at every site, but the point is that I took time to create the pictures, and an unaccepted image should bring down the RPI as a sign that something needs fixing.)

RPI tells me whether what I'm uploading is connecting with buyers.  If RPI is rising, then I'm doing a better job of figuring out what buyers (and the agencies) want... uploading less crap and more valuable stuff.  If RPI is falling, well, there's a problem that needs addressing.

For the record, my daily RPI started around 9 cents per day four years ago, and it's hovering around 11.5 cents per day today.  I take a few nuggets of info from that: my sense of what will sell is gradually getting better, and my old stuff continues to do well.  If you figure your RPI and it falls over time, you need to step back and quickly figure out what buyers want, and you need to upload images with lasting appeal... not pictures that will sell OK right out of the gate and then sink into the abyss.

I just scratch my head when people debate RPD.  What does return per download tell you, except to give you something to get upset over and feel powerless to fix?

There are a few secrets to doing well at SS, or anywhere else for that matter:

1. Be unique... create a unique style
2. Do marketing research... find underserved niches of topics that are in demand

Don't worry about the new vs old image question.  Don't worry about timing your images to be approved at the right time.  Don't look for conspiracy theories about who is or isn't getting a bump.

It's as simple as uploading images that people want.

584
January a bummer?  January is typically one of my best three months, along with March and September.  This January is no exception.  Yesterday was spectacular and this morning I woke up to 70+ downloads and 2 more ELs.

585
This will almost certainly end up a BDE at SS for me.  Half way through the day I'm at 130+ downloads including 5 ELs.

586
Thanks to an EL rush that continues, my SS January tally so far is up about 200% from the same period in 2011.

At IS, I'm down about 50% for the same period of comparison. But frankly, I just don't care about IS anymore.  It could go to zero and I wouldn't really miss them.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your 2011?
« on: January 02, 2012, 00:37 »
Port size and total income up almost exactly 100% from 2010 to 2011.

I improved my workflow so I was able to upload more than in years prior, which led to a direct result in my income.

I track RPI pretty carefully, and it's been very encouraging to see that this number has held steady for me since I started in ms.  This allows me to predict with some confidence that if I increase my port by X images, I will increase my income by X times my RPI.  People may comment that RPI is not a reliable indicator, but for four years and counting it has been 100% accurate in predicting how much I can expect to earn from my work.

General Stock Discussion / Fotolia Payments
« on: December 27, 2011, 10:06 »
I may be crazy, but does this sound right?

I requested payment of over $1,000 in early December.  I just got an email that the money has arrived via PayPal.

You typically can't request a payment until your most recently requested one has cleared, so I went in to request a new payment.  My current balance was well over $1,000 again.  I clicked Convert Credits to begin the process and my balance fell to just over $100.  A conversion request had not yet happened.  It asked the amount I'd like to convert, so I guess it will only allow me to convert the amount showing at the top, just over $100.  Seems like I just witnessed $1,000 disappearing.

I suppose the answer could be that the "disappeared" amount was included in the payment I just received, but that's not how it works, right?  My payment received today was the amount I requested in early December, right?  The amount I am able to request today should be everything earned since the request I put through in early December, correct?

Either I'm losing it or there's a bug.  Anyone else notice anything strange?

Don't worry about timing of uploads at DP or anywhere else.  If the only way your pictures will sell is if you are at the top of the "Latest Uploads" at the most visited time, then there is something wrong with what you're uploading.  It means that your strategy is to upload "more of the same."

Instead, focus those energies on planning and creating more unique stuff -- in-demand subject matters that aren't already done to death, a unique style that's all your own -- and buyers will find them.  That approach will lead to much larger sales than playing the guessing game of what's the best moment to upload stuff that would not otherwise stand out.

I upload when it works well for my schedule.  I don't give a second thought to whether it's good timing for reviews and ultimate placement on the sites.  My sales have done just fine.

CanStock is a very good agency.  Solidly in the middle of the "mid-tier" sites for me.  I earned $364 there in November on a port of 2,000+ pictures.  Will probably see two-thirds of that for December.

« on: December 22, 2011, 14:28 »
From which I would infer either that loop has more than $424 in the same timescale, or is nearly at that level, so that all the work of uploading to various sites wouldn't be worthwhile.

If that is indeed what loop is saying, I think he's way off.  Though some exclusives have been chiming in to say things are just fine for them right now, I can't believe that exclusivity is a better option for anyone.  Loop's $424/day as exclusive vs. lagereek's $424/day as non-exclusive are apples and oranges.  If loop is indeed doing that much at IS exclusively, I would bet he'd make a fair amount more if he could have his port everywhere.  I'm also in that ballpark as a non-exclusive, and I know from my IS stats that I'd have to be doing about 10x as well as I am now by becoming an exclusive to make up the difference.  Even accounting for all the benefits of exclusivity, there's no way it would happen.

But the good news about BigStock, at least for me, is that they've been on a real roll lately, sales-wise.

I'm seeing great, steady growth... now in the $20 a day range.  Yesterday is the first day since I started at iStock that BigStock beat IS.  Oh how the mighty have fallen and formerly small players are benefiting from the missteps of the ignorant and the arrogant.

December is definitely on its usual slide.  I just looked at my chart of monthly variations, with 2011 data on top of 2010, 2009, etc., and it's striking how the patterns are the same every year.  December is always down a fair amount from November.  Then January is a huge bump, February and March continue the climb, and with Easter/Spring Break, stagnation sets in and there is little overall movement until September.  Then there's a huge increase from Sept thru November, and the cycle is back to a falloff in December.   The longer you do this and the more your portfolio and earnings increase, the more statistically valid your numbers will be for making predictions and seeing real trends.

I just tried requesting a payout.  When it got to the buttons to choose how you want to be paid, I tried selecting, but the buttons cannot be checked.  Definitely bugs going on here.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Your plans, for 2012 ?
« on: December 20, 2011, 16:47 »
My plan is to only submit images that will sell ;)

I think you meant this tongue-in-cheek, but that is actually my plan.

In 2011, I focused on increasing my output, but now I'm rethinking that strategy, focusing less on uploading everything I can and more on creating more of what sells, even if I end up uploading less.

I'm in the middle of doing an analysis of what subjects and styles are selling well and what are not.  I am making a list of subjects and styles that I am retiring from my upload routine and will concentrate more on what is actually performing well for me.   It has really opened my eyes to see that certain picture types that I had thought were underperformers are very high earners, and more recent ones that I have been proud of are doing poorly and should be discontinued, as much as it pains me to do so.

Plus, I will be testing some new subjects and styles and performing my analysis on a more frequent basis.   I'm shocked that it has taken me this long to view my results this way and make some tough choices, but I'm excited by the ROI that I expect to see by listening to what buyers want or don't want.

597
42.

When in doubt, on matters such as this, or the Meaning of Life, the answer is always 42.

598
I'll play, since monthly earnings per image is a number I track.  For Nov 2011, the average earnings per image was $4.08.   (I don't track number of downloads.)

« on: December 16, 2011, 13:37 »
I've never been against unique deals, special arrangements, negotiations, etc., when it comes to dealings with stock agencies, at istock or anywhere else. And really I'm not familiar with any of the discussions here about folks being upset with istock for making special arrangements with anyone. If that's taking place, I'm all for it and good for anyone who has been able to negotiate a better deal for themselves.

+1.

If any agency wants to give me a better deal than others get, you bet I'll take it.  Of course, that cuts both ways.  If I hear that someone else whom I consider a peer is getting a good deal, I may press for one myself.  It's a free market, and everyone should be able to go for what they deserve.  I've never been too keen on the union idea for this reason.  I want to sink or swim by my own merits, not be lumped in with a collective and commoditize myself.

Or how about the millions on flickr?

Or the potentially billions that can be found through Google Image Search?

Anyone care to guess how many bloggers or small-time website builders / brochure designers simply do Google searches on what they need, find something large enough and without a watermark, and just "borrow it"?   And in many cases, they're lifting something that someone else has already lifted, so the trail back to the original piece of art that was stolen is too twisted to follow.

Given this perspective, free collections on places like Dreamstime are pretty smart.  They pull in people just looking for free stuff, with the hope of hooking them into paying a buck or two down the road.
Stealing an image from someone is different than what dreamstime is offering:
"The high resolution images downloaded from the free section may be used under the terms mentioned for the regular Royalty Free license".
In my example 1700 free dls and 5 sales, why would you pay for something you can get for free (stealing doesn't get you the license to use it).

Of course it's different.  My point is that from the perspective of a person looking for an image, he/she can go to a high price agency, low price agency, or find something for free.  These options all compete with one another.  The images you're trying to sell are in direct competition with many similar images that are easily obtained for free.   It looked like this conversation was turning into a complaint against low-cost selling or even free collections, and I was pointing out that there's a competitive need for approaches like this.  If microstock is going to survive, it has to wake up to this reality and do things like offer sets of images very cheap or even free as hooks to lure in people who would otherwise just steal.
