The only condition i had when designing this product, was that I got to design it completely as I wanted it. It is so fine-tuned and "custom" and really does not compare to any other product out there.

I didn't notice that, what's the difference between your one and the one that Custom brackets have had out on sale for in the past. i.e. this http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-custom-brackets-digital-pro-sv-kit/p1026865 that's been out a couple of years. (Obviously it's without the monopod and tilt head but I don't want those anyway) On the link you've provided the apparently same set up is $308 which is more than what looks like an identical bracket on the site I've linked to. Has your version got some modifications?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy does it worth time?

These couple hundred pics have been up for a week or so with just 7 views total so I'm not holding my breath.

Don't worry about views and zooms, the info is only taken from account holders and only certain ones at that. Some people drive themselves nuts over their views and zooms, it's irrelevant really, the only figure worth looking is the amount that gets transferred into your account on the 1st of the month, everything else is just 'watching paint dry' IMO.

There's a difference between reporting events and putting your own spin on things, personally I don't like Pickerell's way of reporting it's too self speculative for me, there are dozens of blogs and web based infomagazines (I might have made that term up) that report pretty much everything about this industry as is so I can then form my own opinion, but it's a free world and everyone can make their own choice.

By the way check out Tom's daily stock project blog if you haven't already, I don't think he's claiming they're the worlds greatest stock photos but for me I just enjoy seeing how he can find a stock photo every day and everywhere.

579
Or he'll have to get it stocked by a major retailer.

Custom brackets including the set up here have been available here in the UK at all the major retailers for quite some time, I've been toying over getting one of these for a over a year or so, the only thing that's stopped me is trying to figure out which actual plates, accessories I need (the custom brackets website ain't that good). The product itself is quality.

I think Yuri's just cut an endorsement deal where his name is on the product.

580
He also said, I would appreciate that you do not tell 'my story'. (Just so we are clear this story or this post was not authorized by Daniel or Yuri.)

Well in one respect he got his wish, you didn't tell 'his' story you told your version of it.

I felt this story was important. I had enough information from publicly available sources, even if I had no quotes, to supply some important information to the photo community and particularly the macro community.

Of course it's important, it means you get to write another blog for your paying audience, beats trying to make a living in the industry you speculate about eh!

Personally I like to read the ( free) blogs of people like John Lund and Tom Grill, I get the feeling they know what they're talking about because they're out there doing it successfully.

581
Istock knows what they are doing and are way better at finding fraud attemps than that.

iStock wouldn't be able to spot a fraud attempt if it slapped them in the face whilst wearing a t-shirt with the words "I'm a fraud" written across the chest. The only thing I think iStock are good at doing is marketing, everything else it would appear is a complete disaster.

582
Personally I take anything Jim Pickerall says with a pinch of salt. I only read the first paragraph of this related blog and it was enough for me to form the opinion that yet again he is using the shock and awe approach based on nothing but his own speculation, there are many great blogs on the subject of stock photography done by people who really know what they're talking about and I don't count his as one of them.

As for Yuri and Laflor being one in the same or other speculations, there were some blatantly obvious similarities when he first came on the scene which some of us discussed then, surprised so many people are making such a thing of it now but I guess they've got Pickerall to thank for that. This guerrilla marketing thing can bite you on the backside sometimes, some never seem to learn.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your 2010?
« on: January 13, 2011, 09:08 »
In total revenue up 29.96%

Every site showed a % increase, the smallest of which was iStock which had a 2.2% increase over last years sales.

"they get some money, bragging rights, they get a credit and thats the value they get"

I'm going to contact him and ask if he'll design me a new website and marketing campaign, in return I'll throw him a couple of dollars but the main appeal will obviously be the credit and bragging rights he'll get.

Here's my prediction for the end of 2011:

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: January 11, 2011, 18:57 »
Perhaps that is because all the IT money was going into rolling out the new Photos.com?   It appears Istock is being treated like the black sheep of the Getty Family.

I just read about the relaunch of photos.com today and had the exact same thought as you, I too think that maybe iStockphoto is at the bottom of the pecking order when it comes to the importance of having the site run correctly, and in true tradition they relaunch a site selling all the photos for next to nothing at no doubt huge profits for them.

As you wrote earlier, I thank god I'm not exclusive at Istock.

587
I really wish iStock would go the way of image exclusivity like other agents rather than artist exclusivity.

There aren't many agencies that have complete image exclusivity anymore, some like Getty and Corbis still insist on image exclusivity from individual contributors but their collection as a whole hasn't been exclusive for a long time, therefore I can't see iStock ever doing it, up until last year I would have submitted images to iStock on an exclusive basis but obviously I wouldn't consider that now.

If there's no price difference I might as well know who has it and what use?

They don't tell you 'who' has bought it, only the industry sector.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Image Thieves targetting IS again?!!
« on: January 11, 2011, 14:06 »
iStock appears to be a special target here. Why would someone attack them specifically?

I'd imagine that news about iStocks long running history of complete incompetence at being able to do anything regarding IT issues has a major factor as to why they're being targetted.

Their reputation of supplier and customer relations doesn't exactly paint a glowing picture of how they view business either, so any potential thief must be viewing iStock as a litteral 'free for all' gold mine right now.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out this was all the result of HQ giving out their log in details to a nigerian scam email thinking their long lost uncle had left them $17.5m in a freak car accident.

590
Lisa I think you could word the question slightly better, although we all know what you're talking about now I think somebody reading this in the future could be confused into thinking iStock are raising our royalties !!!!

Maybe:

Yes although I'm still getting a reduction over my 2010 rates.

Yes and now I've retained my rate from 2010.

Neutral I was already remaining on the same rate I had in 2010.

No I'm still getting my commissions reduced by the same amount compared to 2010 royalties.

591
I don't often read the iStock forums but having read the initial statement and then some of the replies I have to remind myself I'm not reading a revised script for Dumb and Dumber.

"As 2010 wound down, our data gave us a more and more complete picture of how the year went." - I can't wait until he finds out they landed on the moon  :o

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock Watch 2011
« on: January 07, 2011, 13:31 »
If the quality of the images they are starting to source drops becuase they are now buying from a new, lesser quality image source, then they will start losing clients.

The quality of images on iStock are no higher that many other sites. Most of the worlds highest selling professional stock photographers sell on many sites, plus iStock is just as full of images by low selling contributors as any of the others.

If what some people believe (i.e. exclusives get a bump up the search ranks) then from a buyers point of view shopping at an alternative site means they don't have to wade through all the stuff from exclusives that have had very few sales, on other sites quality shines through with no 'bump' up.

« on: January 07, 2011, 13:16 »
I am exclusive. Otherwise i wouldnt even be raising the issue. But regardless, you don't seem to know the answer to the question itself it seems???

Well excuse me for trying to help  ::), in your other thread titled "Do you ever wonder" you link to an image which in turn links to the contributor 'CapturedbyAmelia' who has an icon saying less than 250 downloads and no exclusive crown, therefore I was trying to point out that you need to be exclusive to have files in the E+ collection presuming you were that person.

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark III 3 - Rumor Page :)
« on: January 07, 2011, 04:53 »
.........as I've never used a 1d/1ds Mkxx  I don't have a problem with the AF system except live view.

Going from the 1Ds range to 5D the only difference I noticed was a massive drop in quality of the autofocus. On the Ds I could confidently use autofocus in the studio in any situation, I'd never have the same confidence with the 5DmkII.

596
I can't believe the camera was still there when the barber took the towel off his face!

The only thing I can fault about my MkII is the autofocus points, there's not enough for times when you need to use autofocus, if they improve on that I'll get one when it's been out for a couple of months, if not I'll stick with the MkII because it does everything I need and I don't want the extra megapixels.

Yes I saw this the other day, it's being heralded as the poor mans M9, it will be interesting to see some sample files from an end user.

I think you need to be exclusive to have files in E+ and looking at your profile via your other post here you don't appear to be.
