General - Stock Video / Re: Sound in videos acceptations
« on: October 19, 2019, 13:29 »
It should really enhance the clip, otherwise it won't be accepted. What kind of video do you have that needs sound? Does the usefulness of the video disappear if sound is removed or changed?

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock reviewers are idiots
« on: October 16, 2019, 14:23 »

I know, but the point is, I don't want to adjust and complicate my workflow just for them. So I've stopped uploading vectors for the time being.

I get it. I hate changing my workflow too. (it seems like it's almost daily) Can I offer you a quote from Darwin?

"It is not the most intellectual or the strongest of species that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able to adapt to and adjust best to the changing environment in which it finds itself." Charles Darwin

Darwin was right about that, but spending my precious time creating new stuff that OTHER agencies will accept instead of wasting it on Shutterstock is a form of survival too ;)

Not only have they gone overboard with their similars policy (if I upload just 3 variations on an image, each with a different symbol, two of them get rejected even though the concept is clearly different), they have also killed vector uploading with their insane 4 MP minimum for vectors. And for what? They're vectors! Since we can no longer upload accompanying JPEGs (which I used for keywords and description) the upload process has become a chore again.

You can embed the keywords and descriptions in Illustrator files and eps10 and files using exiftools

Pond5 / Re: Any ideas to suggest to them?
« on: October 14, 2019, 10:03 »
One Pond5 curated collection description says:

4K
"That sure it s [sic] a lot of pixels... four thousand of them, to be exact. "

Apart from being far from exact, last time I checked 4K was more than 8 million pixels, but apparently Pond5 experts know best.

Adobe Stock / Setting a custom thumbnail for uploaded assets
« on: October 12, 2019, 08:29 »
I know this has been asked before multiple times, on this forum and in the Adobe Support Community...It's an issue that's been around for YEARS, but Adobe refuses to budge.
So I'm going to try one more time: I urge Adobe to allow contributors to select a custom thumbnail for uploaded videos. It's basic functionality and a good thumbnail is like a storefront; first impressions are everything!

When I uploaded a video, AdobeStock randomly creates a thumbnail. When I have a black and white luma matte sequence attached to my video, Adobe will sometimes select this part for the thumbnail, resulting in a bad representation of my otherwise colorful video.

Customers often quickly scan the search results, and they'll more often than not skip any unappealing thumbnails without checking them properly. Customers might get frustrated when they can't instantly find what they're looking for. This is not only bad for Adobe, but also reduces my chances of getting views and sales.

@Mat Hayward: if you're reading this, please take this up with the tech department or whoever is responsible for this, if you can. Addressing this issue would be beneficial for everyone. Thanks!

I've found some of mine, edited and uploaded...I suggest we all take a look and bomb their email with DMCA request, or perhaps contact anyone you know who might help in bringing down this website.

If it was up to me, the owner of the website would be prosecuted for theft and forced to donate all ad revenue to charity.

Pond5 / Re: Any ideas to suggest to them?
« on: October 05, 2019, 09:21 »
4K clips shouldn't cost buyers double that of HD....I would suggest only a 20% premium max.

No way, and that shouldn't be up to Pond5 to decide.

Ontopic: It's futile to suggest ideas. Their ""townhall meeting"" is not a town hall meeting where people can shout suggestions. It's just a livestream with announcements, nothing more.

General - Stock Video / Re: Storyblocks - Member library
« on: October 01, 2019, 10:54 »
Is there anyone who did join their member library and would like to chime in on how revenue is growing/shrinking? I'm curious to see if Storyblocks lives up to its promises. Please pm me if you don't like sharing it publicly.

610
No refunds here, just very minimal sales, except for one 'big' credit pack sale.

Got mine today! Ha ha! Just kidding! Im a worthless illustrator!

What about animating your illustrations and uploading it as video? If your subject matter is suitable, you could try that.

VideoBlocks / Re: Storyblocks Member Library Populated by Thieves
« on: September 10, 2019, 05:04 »
If they refuse to take it down, simply publish it on social media, if people find out that the Storyblocks unlimited membership library features stolen content, it will be bad for their business. I'd be happy to share/retweet it.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 will remove ability to set prices?
« on: September 05, 2019, 07:44 »
I once promoted Pond5 because they seemed fair and honest, now I've deleted all my Pond5 references, backlinks and promo material. Suck it, Pond5.

And then out of the blue, an email from Pond5:
"Promote Your Work: Each month, the Top 3 artists with the biggest increase in referral traffic to their portfolios win a $100 VISA gift card and promotion from Pond5!"

They really are trying everything to keep us on board! We raise our prices, they cap it. We remove our ref links, they throw in some gift cards for active members to push traffic.

Wouldn't have complained about it if it was favorable.

Of course. It's never about morals and what's right, it's about what benefits me.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Stock Creative Cloud Bonus Program
« on: September 04, 2019, 11:25 »
Is the give away 2019 also for those of us who got and used it in 2018 when we have again enough uploads in 2019?
And how does it work? Do we have to wait for a new code?

Yes, regardless of whether or not you've used a code in 2018, you should be eligible for a new code in 2019 if you meet the required number of uploads.
The code will be sent automatically some weeks after you've reached the target, according to the FAQ.

My experience is that promoting stock video through YouTube attracts people looking for free footage. I've had some people posting comments like: "It says royalty-free in your title, but it links to a site where I have to PAY for it!". And then I have to explain that 'royalty-free' isn't the same as 'free'...
Others find my prices too high (which is roughly the same as regular Shutterstock prices).

My guess is that those who search for footage via YouTube are probably amateur content creators without budget. Not the audience you're reaching for. So you can cross that off your list.

Adobe Stock / Re: Video rejected for "lack of relevance"
« on: September 02, 2019, 03:43 »
So it's done: finally made my first sale of this one on SS : https://www.shutterstock.com/video/clip-1013958596
It was worth it I guess then ;-)
I sell a lot of this in vector format so I was believing someone would have an interest in animation format

To be honest, I wouldn't call 1 sale per year "worth it"...

Not wrong but... I have around 1700 videos. If I sold each of them once a year at $21,54 that's $35700 in my pocket
That's what I was meaning. It took less time to make that anim than lots of my vectors which painfully make $20
And I guess that will be the first of a long series  :)

I understand your way of thinking, but keep in mind that the majority of your video's won't sell, ever. If you are going to make lots of animations similar to this one, you'd need more than 1 sale / year to make up for those that don't sell.

The cold, hard fact is that for most contributors, unless they have a really strong portfolio with lots of variation, only 10-15% will be viable for 1 sale or more. Maybe 1%-5% will be bestsellers which will make up for the many hours of work, but the majority of the files will never be sold.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 will remove ability to set prices?
« on: September 01, 2019, 05:33 »
I got an HD video sale today, the "list price" was $47.50 even though the actual price was $79, they even gave a discount, so it sold for $38, netting me only $15.80. What is going on?

It's sold even cheaper than my web price, which is $39...

Edit: probably a Global Partner Program, but it doesn't say so in the financials tab.

621
Quick update: the situation was handled swiftly by Adobe Support within 24 hours after submitting a ticket and the rejection had to do with crediting NASA for using elements of their maps. The files were accepted after all.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 will remove ability to set prices?
« on: August 31, 2019, 05:41 »
Are there other agencies that offer better conditions? Shutterstock sells our footage for $1.5, and they do not answer your email. Most agencies give much less than 40% to contributers. Where can you set your clip price higher than $79 and get 40%?
I think this is a good move by Pond5.

Whether or not they're still well above other agencies in terms of commission %, is irrelevant. The problem with Pond5 is their obvious lack of respect for their contributors, treating us like expendable suppliers and trying to mask their shady moves with marketing speak as if we're complete idiots.

Shutterstock may not be perfect either, at least they've never cut commissions. *knocks on wood*

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 will remove ability to set prices?
« on: August 30, 2019, 11:19 »
Apparently I wasn't the only one who increased prices to make up for their commission cuts.
If they hadn't cut our commissions, we wouldn't have been forced to increase prices beyond the market price. Pond5 once again shows its true colors and pulls the same shady d*ck move Dissolve once did. All because of a problem they created themselves.

I once promoted Pond5 because they seemed fair and honest, now I've deleted all my Pond5 references, backlinks and promo material. Suck it, Pond5.

Well, this constant need for growth is an unrealistic expectation anyway (of both investors and the company itself). Growth has to diminish at some point, especially in a competitive market. To be honest I expect Shutterstock to plateau a lot sooner. As long as the market is stable and their market share remains constant, it's all good. But the insane hunger for more profits will probably result in commission cuts.

Adobe will probably emerge as the new market leader, within a few years.
Good for who? Certainly not contributors if the supply continues to increase exponentially which can only mean reduced income on average to contributors.

A stable market is good for us if there are no...
- major shifts in market share
- excessive price wars
- agencies achieving monopoly position
- new technologies disrupting the industry (and our revenue stream)

Of course increasing supply is currently a threat for existing contributors, but that supply will plateau too, eventually. Shutterstock's current dip shows us that buyers prefer quality over quantity, therefore agencies will probably start to increase quality requirements for new contributors as well as implement better quality control for stock submissions.
