General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy - is it worth it?
« on: August 27, 2019, 08:29 »
Hi Brian,

Looking through your port, I don't see how you would have many sales on Alamy.

Most of my sales on there are of news-type editorials and general travel postcard type shots.

603
Is it where lead the good advices you give or sell? Do you need some?  :D Sorry, to be brutally honest

What do you mean?

604
Considering dropping 123centsRF
5,050 assets to get this pathetic lunch money results...

605
My number of downloads is rising steadily but totals earned is all over the place. July 44cents RPI is very disappointing.

(i was on a 3-year boycott of istock and only started uploading against about 10 months ago)

606
I'll start:

Canstock: Ridiculous rejection reasons + very very very few sales
Colourbox: Very few sales + ridiculous prices for clips (as low as 20cents each)
Canva: Made friends with free-download devils + shady deals with Getty = huge drop in already low earnings for me

Depends on what you shoot.

You shoot trending lifestyle model-released with multiple models or tomatoes isolated with your smartphone?

608
Thread on thieves taken down and comment wasn't even accepted. Predictable.

609
Wednesday afternoon I'm getting a 404 error on these pages, so it appears SS has taken the thief's work down. Finally.

If I were a betting person, I'd take odds on how long before a contributor spots another of these portfolios - but at least there are two down...

To be fair, they do wack these accounts eventually, but what troubles me is that there's no system in place them being accepted in the first place. I know it's RF and non-exclusive which makes it more difficult but the current system isn't working.

Heres another profile:-  https://www.shutterstock.com/g/patrick+littles

Its most likely the same group.  Travel a lot, all editorial, illiterate captions that have no relevance to the images.
So far images on there are stolen from Getty, Universal studios, a few glamour collections and even some from personal blogs and trip reports.

SS yet again pathetic in its lack of reviewing and verification.

Given how much Getty love to lawyer up you have to wonder how long it'll be for them to have large scale selling of their images by a competitor before they choose to act.

True wackamole style. New one pops up as soon as another gets wacked!

611
Childish attitude by SS...

612
Editorial images of obviously posed lifestyle shots are a dead-giveaway of a thieving account.

613
Well-spotted!

Same style of captions as the last mole with the images from Reuters.

I would post it on the SS thread but my account is blocked until tomorrow, am a one-month probation period where all my posts are moderated and have -4 points from my account!

Great stuff, Alex! And those Archangel shots are really intriguing. You have certainly got the eye for what they like!

Just published this blog post on getting started in book cover photography:

I see SS deleted the latest "stolen images" threads and if I read correctly before the thread was deleted it seems Alex (Brasilnut) has been banned from the forum (waits to be corrected)
What is this some kind of weird big brother mentality in that outfit?

I can confirm that my account has been suspended for 3 days followed by 28 days of moderation for posting this suggestion to the SS forum.

Their actions look pathetic and puerile. But today looks like a small success if the 3200 image account of math313 has been taken down and stays down. I hope that your sales account hasn't been suspended and only your forum account, otherwise that is shocking!

My account, which is what really matters, has been unaffected.

Hey all,

I keep thinking how this stock game is no longer viable as a source of full-time income in most developed countries.

Therefore, I've been thinking about the best way to transition to more lucrative private client work. How have many of you gone about this...sure you can create a portfolio page at SquareSpace or Photoshelter but do you also ever link to you existing stock portfolio?

In addition, would you say that the skills learned creating stock concepts helped out in a wider context? I feel that when I started back in 2012, that the agencies were much more strict with technical reviews that it forced me to improve drastically. These days, that's more difficult as we've seen them let in all sorts of junk.

The above concerns me personally since I'm finally picking up some regular client work in real estate, conferences, events, etc but my true interests lie more in travel and breaking news type work of which I receive no commissioned work, so looking for better ways to pitch myself in those areas.

Looking forward to a fruitful discussion.

Thank you for the honest reports, I always share them with friends in the German community.

It really helps people to get an honest perspective of how stock works.

You're welcome :) I try to give a no-crap approach and I think it comes across. I also have disdain for some agencies and it shows! So far this year I've ditched Canstock, Canva and Colourbox. No regrets.

If you or anybody have any suggestions for metrics, etc I would appreciate.

I tried to set up a poll so visitors can vote on their "Turd of the Month Agency" but had some tech issues...will try again next month.

Can you clarify that FAA sale you missed out on?
When I forgot I'd changed my debit car in the previous year, my port just seemed to 'disappear' from sale and I didn't notice until I next tried to upload something a good few weeks later.
So are you saying they sold one of your images and you got nothing for it?
Or you got an arbitrary $15?
Or $15 is what you set your commission at (for any size) and you missed out on the accessories commission?

I believe that when it reverted back to the free account from premium (I didn't bother to renew since wasn't getting many sales), the margin dropped to some absurdly low levels. Need to look into it.

Apparently, accessories commission isn't available on the free account.

POND5 0? Any speculation on the reasons why?

No idea. But the good news is that all the other major agencies delivered on videos for me.

Fun read - thanks.

Why is your number so lo for Adobe Stock? You have fewer files than at SS, but still, $65 is tiny. Seems really out of line.

Indeed! Most of my pics are editorials (about 60%) so it reflects on the low volume vs Alamy / SS / iStock.

I also started quite late uploading regularly at Fotolia about 2 years ago. Even at $65 it's still picking up slowly...I think that in a year I should be earning about $150 there regularly...let's see!

As for Arcangel, these are the covers. Let's just say that the royalties are considerably more than the average at micros...

Might as well stop adding to the December thread and start a fresh one!

Just published a new brutally honest earnings detailed report...the good, the bad and the turdy...check it out!

I submit to a total of 16 agencies consisting of Microstock, Print on Demand, Rights-Managed book covers and increasingly footage. Here's the link:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2019/08/01/july-2019-brutally-honest-earnings-report/

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. Although it often times it feels like a hamster on a treadmill, I enjoy the journey...in particular improving my footage skills with the goal of picking up more lucrative client work on the side.

How was your July?

I've also emailled the author of that Getty image, who is a pro sports tog.

Brazilnut wins the prize, and SS have sunk even lower in my estimation.

Nobody took my $10 bet that the port would still be up after 1 week. :(

Indeed, so sad they are so slow to act...

625
I'll bet $10 with anybody that this account will still be up in a week - 31 July at midnight deadline.

Bets settled via paypal.

Any takers?
