It's good to remember that DT penalizes you for having lots of keywords. All things being equal, images with more keywords appear lower in search results at DT. When submitting there, I usually delete a few of my less important keywords. I think it helps. I didn't know that about fewer keywords leading to a higher search result. I need to take that into account in future uploads. Steve

From an analytical standpoint, it is always good to know what works and what doesnt, For instance, if i place $100 worth of adwords and cannot directly attribute sales to that money, its pointless to keep investing in it. I would be better off trying something else. Just my personal opinion, tho. I agree - I did some paid adwords when I first started my stock blog. Not sure it ever did much good! I've concluded that the chance of someone who wants to buy an image seeing the right words in an adword is almost negligible - hence my focus now on getting my name, websites and images around. Steve

Hi Cathy
Hard to say. I did some research from the last set of sales (1 person bought 3 images of Washington DC). I can see incoming visitors from both Google and Symbiostock.info, I can see a search from the home page for Washington DC, but I can't piece the flow together. I am sure it is probably possible to do that, but it would take some time. I don't see any incoming search terms from Google that have anything to do with Washington.
At the end of the day, I take the incoming links from wherever they come. I try to boost my web presence via my own blog, via Fine Art America, via this site, via Symbiostock, and people find me in one way or another. A couple of my purchases have been from people seeing an image on another site somewhere and emailing me. I see all that as positive and if this buyer happened to find Symbiostock.info and came that way, it is fine, if they came in another way, that is fine. I'm happy to have as broad a reach as I can.

Wow - first time back to the forum for a while and I see this!!
I've been a happy Symbio photography user from the beginning. I've sold:
3 @ $20 6 @ $3 2 @ $1
Did I make a profit taking hosting into account - no. Am I happy with progress on sales - could be better. Will I stick with it as I add the rest of my portfolio - hell, yes.

I think they will reject them all. You are aware of issues with model and property releases I assume - most of them need either one or the other, and they are not particularly newsworthy to fit into the old definition of Editorial. I'm not sure SS would take these as the trial images.

I get some sales on several other art sites Hi Sharpshot Which Fine Art sites are you successful on? I've tried Smugmug without much success, but haven't ventured further. I don't really understand why my sales have taken off in the past 3 months - most of them shots of Washington DC, funnily enough. Maybe I'll be back in 3 months saying that it was a flash in the pan and sales have dropped to zero! steve

How did this site pan out for you Steve? Hi Ron I had totally forgotten about this site - in fact, if you had asked me if I uploaded to them, I would have said no! The site is still there, my images are still present, my sales (just checked now) are still zero. I've only got 20 images there, so perhaps there is not much chance of a sale, but for me, it is a dead duck. Steve

I'm not sure you need the clause to be honest - the publisher of an image is the one at risk. It has been shown many times that offering an image for sale is not publishing.

Always remember that it is the buyer and users responsibility to decide if an image can be used in the way they plan to use it. To take your example, lets assume the Trevi Fountain is trademarked (it is too old to be copyright). That image could be used in a travel article about Rome, but it could not be used to support an advert about a water feature installer. So, how can you, as the photographer know at the time you sell the image?
You can either just say - the use of all images is the responsibility of the buyer, or you could play safe and say Editorial use only. If someone decided to sue you (and they could for any reason), your defense would be better with the editorial warning, but you would still have the costs of defending yourself.
Having said all this, people sue for money, and if you appear to be a penniless stock photographer, why would they bother?

I don't know if this is happening to others, but my sales on FAA have really picked up this last quarter. All of 2012 (before taking the premium account) I made $27 in profit, but since September 2013, I've earned $416 in margin on the prints and accessories. It does seem to be that sales possibly generate more sales - either through the extra visibility of their sales announcement pages, or maybe the search has started to favor more popular images? As I don't talk about Shutterstock earnings now on my blog, I decided to do a full review/explanation of how I use FAA, and how I price the images, so if you are interested, you can find it here: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2013/12/fine-art-america-increasing-sales-photo-prints/Anyone else seeing a recent increase? I'm definitely going to upload some more images as a result (which will probably destroy my run of luck, but who knows.) Beats uploading to Most Photos.... Steve

Ahhh - can I use a new file, remove all keywords apart from Nobody and then copy that. If I paste to all the others I can deselect "Overwrite" in the options? Then I do that update file data?

Well, you can do it in Deep Meta in about 3 clicks. I use Deepmeta, but hadn't spotted that. I was looking at it just now - how do I add a single new keyword to multiple files? I think that once it is in there, I can select them all and click on the "Send File data to iStock" option. But what is the process for adding a new keyword to many files? Steve

What I saw, and never have done in my many landscape and travel shots, is to put "nobody" as a keyword. I must be missing out on thousands of dollars of income with that one mistake!

The author of this first volume of e-magazines about Photographing Food has now moved on to a new volume - focusing more on composition and styling. I've extended my original post on the topic on my website: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2013/11/stock-photo-topics-photographing-food-magazine-volume-2/ and am now looking forward to getting into Volume 2. It was quite rightly mentioned earlier in this thread that you could buy a full book for the price of the complete set of magazines (which is true) - I just happen to like these things coming along at intervals so you have time to read, absorb and practice some of the techniques. Enjoy! Steve PS - the direct link to his site is: https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?cl=235116&c=ib&aff=257311" target="ejejcsingle" (and, yes, I have an affiliate code there - search for Photographing Food if you prefer to avoid that.)

Unless it is an image of the particular glass item that a scientific buyer would want (and would probably need a property release) I was assuming this was more a picture of the glass in a lab environment and this was a blow up of part of it. In a general lab environment, why would you go to the trouble of getting a property release for the glass?
That's all I'm thinking, although I'm no expert on the needs of a scientific buyer. You are right - you could submit as editorial, which could be the main use of this sort of image?

I would delete something like that. Even if you managed to get a property release, it doesn't really add to the image unless it is something every buyer of that sort of an image would need to see.

Well, I guess I can't publish my clever earnings charts any longer due to the change in the T&C for Shutterstock...
I had a pretty good month - BME on Shutterstock and easily getting into four figures. Not sure how iStock will perform as I put the PP earnings in as an estimate and then correct when they come along later. Last month on iStock was great, reach $441 in total or which $330 were from PP sales. I thought this would be the BME, but the other sites didn't match Shutterstock's performance, and some, like Pond5 dropped almost to zero for some reason.
Last month I had two $90 profit sales on FAA - this month just $17 there.
End result, $2121 for October, compared to $2550 in September but nicely on track for my personal goal of $26K this year.
Steve
PS - nothing this last month from Symbio, but I'm moving it to a dedicated server and will put a lot more effort into getting my portfolio on there in the coming weeks.

Yes, I think the issue that those images were taken on private land at the event and so SS will only take them as editorial if you had permission to be there as a valid editorial photographer. I'm not sure they can do that in retrospect, but I have never been down that road.
Editorial use only really gives protection to the user (and photographer/agency) if the image is taken in a public place. You can't go into a National Trust building or land in England, say, and take images for editorial use, because the terms of conditions at entry forbid such photography.

Just going back to the Livestock App (which is great!), how do you make it go back more than a month to see all the PP downloads in the past month. As far as I can see, mine stops at the download on 17 September and won't go back earlier?
