It's death by a thousand cuts.

This summarizes it very well.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Why do WE get paid commission?

I think we call them agencies but they don't call themselves agencies, at least not any more. It implies a certain responsibility to their clients (us) and heaven knows they don't want any of that.

I think it would be nice if we could think of a different graphic that wasn't so 'downish'.  The "-" is simply to say you disagree, nothing more nefarious than that... often it is seen as an attack.  We should be able to receive a minus without needing to feel attacked.  We need an icon that symbolizes disagree.

I'm not sure that is possible. Many people feel attacked the second someone doesn't say "wow great idea". Like GWB said "you are with us or against us".

The house of cards has become precariously fragile. When the players involved stop caring or even worse, start kicking at the base, then it's only a matter of time until the inevitable happens. Starting phony dialogues about what can be done to improve the situation shows a complete disrespect for the players. Telling everyone everything is good because it's not worse, is just as disrespectful. And that's what it all comes down to. Respect. Not giving a simple * about the very people making you insanely rich. It is how revolutions get started, governments topple and greedy companies die.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: E+ Sales on Getty - very nice...
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:16 »
E+ for whatever reason, is being allowed to dominate the search results on the Getty site. That would be the reason you are doing well there. But believe me, this hardly goes unnoticed by regular Getty contributors who would like to know why this is being allowed. Getty has a lot hungry mouths to feed and most aren't passive bystanders.

Off Topic / Stephen Strathdee aka sharply_done RIP
« on: December 18, 2012, 13:08 »
A friend got me this news this morning. Very very sad.  I knew Stephen a little bit and we would email back and forth on many topics. We had chance to go flying  and doing aerial photography together once.

Stephen Strathdee passed away suddenly on Friday December 14 while skiing in Whistler's Harmony Bowl.

I added this shot of Stephen and I back in 2009. Him at the controls of trusty FHTI 1966 C-172.

Where I was sold is when taking aerials from a plane. I had a 70-200 2.8IS and a 24-70 f/2.8 non IS. The images from the 70-200 were way crisper even when shooting at the longer focal lengths. I sold the 24-70 f/2.8 and bought the 24-105 f/4, even though the 24-70 is optically better.

I like to work handheld and the IS gives me many more usable images.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Unions kill another Company
« on: November 16, 2012, 10:14 »
Right!! Only unions bring down companies, but nothing about profit happy, move jobs anywhere in the world, hire only part time labor, forget the benefits, greedy companies?

Law and common sense aren't always seen together. The glasses become part of the appeal of the image. Whether this is good or bad is another question. For the longest time I used Apple products in images with no problems as long as the logo was not visible. I still brush out the Nike swish, not the shoe. That too seems acceptable. As far as agency lawyers are concerned anyway. But a lawsuit could quickly change all that for everyone. I hope the case goes nowhere but like I said, common sense has little to do with it.

Off Topic / Re: Spend your life doing what you love
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:45 »
If what you loved stayed static it would be less of a problem. I think most people don't know what they like, especially when young. A basic education is good start and important foundation for whatever you do.

The trouble with making your passion your vocation is it often becomes just another job.

It's in the name, Cre.  For Creature or creep or cretin or creosote. I can't imagine anything positive when I see the name.

General - Stock Video / Re: Video sales on IS??
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:05 »
I have a smallish video non exclusive with iS and started off last year making regular sales. But I agree, the sales lately have been really bad at iS. It's a bit like this all over though. Pond5 and RevoStock have been poor as well but there at least I see some sales. SS is about the best right now for me. Funny I thought it must be the exclusives making all the sales at iS.

Have the buyers stopped purchasing these illustrations?

At least with free you get 100% commission.

Bent over picking up a quarter.

The words "cooperative" and "agency" can't coexist. They are, by nature, incongruous.

General Macrostock / Re: submitting to Getty
« on: August 08, 2012, 09:32 »
In case of Getty I'm just wondering is it just their disclaimer or does it really take up to 60 days.
I think I already forgot about my application then I got the acceptance mail, but this was years ago I have no idea about today but I doubt they are faster now.
Probably, if they see something that is truly different and excites them they will respond in a timely manner. But understand they have bazzilions of images flooding them already. So the "stand up and be noticed" part is very difficult.

Newbie Discussion / Re: HDR
« on: July 30, 2012, 21:33 »
You are naive.
Sorry to say.
First. the most important thing in photography and earning money in photography is style.
You need to have a style.

And out of all techniques and fancy equipment, HDR is only one.
Blurred trees? yes there is.
Use them to your advantage.

It's kinda hard to talk about everything at once, no?

It's hard to beat the good old telephone when it comes to getting business. You do a bit of research, call someone who might need your work, and see what happens. Eventually someone does and if you don't screw it up, you can get a long term client. If you do a good job, you may get a referral as well. I find with long term clients, you don;t need anything except the time to take them for lunch now and then. A web page is good for newer clients and FB is a complete waste of time.

Canon / Re: EOS M mirrorless camera released
« on: July 23, 2012, 22:42 »

Some people say that mirrorless will entirely replace DSLRs eventually. I believed that, but now I'm not so sure. Will there always be a market for large body cameras, even of the tech doesn't need the large body? I'm thinking of pros who, to some extent, are distinguished in public by their noticeably larger cameras.

This is yet another case of size matters. It's doesn't have to be too big but does need to do the job, ask any bride, she'll tell you. If it's too small you'll have a hard time holding it steady, ending in a blur at best. Resulting in a annoyed bride and poor after wedding sales. Which will lead to fewer engagements in the future. And we all want to avoid that don't we? Then there is the question of easy focusing. Sure all you young guys can get a good focus going no matter what distance you're away from the viewfinder but us old guys need a little help. It takes time for the old (eye) muscles to flex accordingly and poor lighting just reduces the odds of a proper focus.

Since Alamy went to their ridiculous 3 tier keywording system I haven't uploaded that much. It's too painful. What is the CRE in Crestock stand for?

Just when you think you've seen it all. I can't say I'd rig myself for this but do see the attraction of it. You chose a great subject to show of the possibilities. Thanks.
