iStockPhoto.com / Re: PP Sales Anxiety
« on: June 28, 2013, 14:12 »
Lobo has announced that PP sales probably won't happen until next week.

Another iStock pie crust.
An identical announcement has been made re mirrored Getty images.
No suggestion that someone might be required to work on to solve the problem. H*ll no. Don't let the contributors think its 'all about them'.

Wow, they made an announcement before 4 on a Friday.  How unusual, usually they wait to post these things until the office is closing.

This photo is of the "C" train tracks post flood

Removed

I have been reminded that I should not post a photo without giving proper credit.  I linked to photo that is appearing from many different sources.  The source I posted from was a radio station that also did not share photo credits.  At the moment, this photo has been shared via same radio station 1594 times without credit.  Shame on me.  The intel appears to be correct, and I humbly agree that his/her advice is correct.  If you are curious about the photo, I am sure it will be easy to find (Interesting, I just searched for it with same keywords and the first image that came up was from the Windsor Star, a legitimate newspaper, without a photo credit to be found).

Hi PixArt - The photo you are using is from the Calgary Herald by photographer Ted Rhodes. Posting without permission (and even credit) not a good thing to do.

PP would certainly be affected if employees can not get to work.  The office may be closed still.  I have not watched the coverage in a couple days, but the mayor had said he was uncertain of one transformer, and that one neighborhood may be without power for weeks or months.  Maybe it's been inspected and resolved - not sure.  If I have the location right, it looks like Istock is just across the tracks from an evacuation zone that is still red.  The City itself is still under a State of Local Emergency.   A lot of workers would presumably live close to the office - so, many may still be misplaced.  If homes were flooded they would busy ripping out dry wall and not thinking about PP.

I agree, it would be nice if they would make a statement though.

Sorry you likely have to be signed into Facebook to see this video, but look at the river just stealing trees!  Someone in the post said that each tree on Memorial Drive was for a soldier who lost his life in first ww.

Any word on their neighborhood Les?  Hopefully just precautionary.  I bet you are worried!  And isn't Stampede 2nd or 3rd week in July?  Although, I'm sure no one is thinking about Stampede right now though - but I wonder how many people are planning to arrive in Calgary from all over the world in the next couple weeks!

My cousin is city police and she said there were a lot of rescues last night that could have been avoided.

And grsphoto, yeah, Banff would be a sweet extended stay... except it must be the most expensive town in the Province, we've never stayed for long.  $15 hamburgers are a cheap lunch in Banff.....

iStockPhoto.com / Calgary Flooding - Any word from Istock?
« on: June 21, 2013, 16:13 »
Have there been any statements from Istock about the flooding Calgary?  Any hiccups today?  100,000 have been evacuated in Calgary, especially from downtown and many communities without power.   Looking at mapquest, (1240 20th Ave SE, Calgary AB I think is where they are) they look like they are at least 12 blocks from the Bow River - but how low is their land?  I logged on for the first time in months, the website appears to be working.  (Everything happens at Istock on Fridays doesn't it!)

Even row 10 of the Saddledome is under water!   The poor people in Banff are landlocked, all the highways are washed out.

Symbiostock - Suggestions / Re: Paid Plugin Requests Here
« on: June 18, 2013, 19:28 »
Thanks Alberto, I can password galleries on my business site and I thought it must have been built into the theme.  So I will look into your suggestion.

I like that SY resizes and watermarks the photos and that you can see a nice thumbnail.  I have to do that in PS right now for my client galleries.  And my stupid client galleries show only a square portion of the photo right now.   Leo's done a lot of things right and could sell this thing to a wide market of Photographers (arent's stock photographers a limited number?).  Should have been ready when Smugmug raised their prices this past year, they lost thousands of clients - including me.

(1) How about ability to sell physical goods?

(2) Password protected gallery to show clients.

(3) The ability to turn off the buying part of the site

Yeah, I know - for my own purposes I would like a hybrid stock site and specialty store.

Software / Lightroom 4.4 Probs
« on: June 14, 2013, 13:27 »
So, why does Lightroom introduce new software and the same day I have probs?

I have almost 500 photos on a card from a busy couple days doing sports team portraits.  As I always do, I make a folder for each team and drag a copy of the files to that folder tp work from.   I can see those files in PS, Bridge, Explorer.....

But Lightroom is telling me "no photos in this folder".  UGHHH.   So, now I'm working of the original file from the card, because LR can see them while still on the card.  I even made new folders and started again to have the same issue.

Is this a problem anyone knows anything about?   Any setting I may have changed or something they have had to fix?  Thanks!

I love it how every so often I wonder if I did the right thing dropping Istock and then a post like this comes out.

636
Oh my, what a discussion!  It would be interesting to see how many thumbs up and how many thumbs down each post gets, because I have the feeling that negative posts may look like -10 but that doesn't mean the don't actually have 20 +'s, you can't even see them because of the 30 -'s!

The little piece of reality here that makes me sick to my stomach, is the fact that so many of us feel it is necessary to protect freedom of speech from the very people we entrust to sell our material!!!

I've seen the copycats theory presented..... (I am personally too lazy to look for and reproduce hot photos  ETA I should add ethical to this too - but I am definitely too lazy...)... wouldn't it be easier for a copycat to go right to the agency than to one of our portfolios to see what the hottest selling photos are?

OP asked about Clarity - has anyone used it.  It is on sale until the end of the month, which is TODAY.  I was looking at it a couple weeks ago and then forgot!

Good one Leo! :)

Somebody I knew in London went bankrupt, massive studio debts this and that. Bailiffs came. He had nothing to declare, no income, nothing.
What he had was an extensive portfolio in a well known stock-agency, at least earning him enough to tick over, wife and a kid.

The IRS investigating ofcourse finally found him and his portfolio through the Internet. Several net friends in forums had started to call him by his name, so the pseudo did not help.

Just sharing. It might mean nothing though. Although if they can find, so can the Tax man.

I know the point about identity that you are getting across....   But seriously, is it not the law in London to claim all income?  It is here.  Are you saying it's a crime that he got caught committing tax fraud?  That people with jobs should pay taxes but not people who sell photos?

So, if the "World's No. 1 Selling Microstock Photographer" is no longer in micro, who will take this title?  Of will his sales at IS alone maintain this title?

Did anyone wonder if Getty purchased People Images and has a no-compete with Yuri for a couple years?

I haven't had the time to really ingest 12 pages of this thread - but last I heard from Yuri he had a meeting coming up with Getty about Google Drive. Then Sean got fired.  And now Yuri is running around town wearing a crown.  Hmmm.... maybe SJLocke was a condition.

Don't forget the copyright/watermark since they strip the metadata and claim that they own everything you post.

And PS png's look better.

647
You can order prints with the graphpaper theme.  Which I would LOVE to see on SY.  (And would pay extra for it).   A place for clients to proof and place orders.  Password a private gallery.  Or a place to sell your own fine art prints or physical goods.

Hint.... hint... Leo

I had uploaded an early version of their sell media plugin and I found SY is much easier to work with.  Can't wait till July when I have some spare time to get back onto this project!

Dreamstime announced their new carreers page on Facebook a couple days ago.  They are looking for reviewers.

649
Does this change anything - can I run it on a laptop and on a desktop or will that be 2 subscriptions?  (I believe currently no to photoshop, yes to lightroom?)

Leaf, I was going to enter this but I missed the deadline - I did make a start as you can see in the top version. The next step would have been a version with the initials, MSG, in the circles. The other version, bottom example, was just a quick idea but would need to be developed properly.

I hate to say this, but I like both of Reef's more than the contest entries!  Maybe the first bubble could be the iris of a lens or is that too much of a cliche?
