iStockPhoto.com / Re: Got Flames?« on: March 17, 2009, 13:12 »Only one flamer so far with another one about 8 downloads away and have been a contributor at IS for about 1 year. The flamer, which I never thought in a million years would be popular, took off after being online for one month, peaked on month 4, died when they changed the best match and put my best sellers in the back and now it is selling consistently again almost 1 year online. Yes, very useful and topical image. I can understand why it has done so well. 629

A question for those of you that have flaming images (100 downloads or greater) on iStock.
What was the time on line before your shot(s) to took off? Weeks, months, years? I have a couple of images that have sold briskly for the first 20, 30 or 40 downloads but then they drop off pretty quickly after that. I have yet to get a flamer. Also, what do you think contributed to your files success? Was it featured as a file of the week possibly, or came up high in the best match on a seasonal search? Thanks all! Joseph 631
General Stock Discussion / Re: If you could be microstock god for a day... what would you do?« on: March 16, 2009, 20:21 »
Abolish Subs, or at least make them all on the IS model.
Abolish categories as well with the possible exception seasonal categories. Minimum of 50% payment to the artist, or 40% if the stock site does the key wording for us. Minimum of $5.00 US for an extra small (web size).... as long as I am G_d might as well dream big ![]() 632

What I want to know is, how does a university medical student find time to put thousands of shots on line and still get his studies done?
My hats off to him. This guy must really have energy to burn! I'll be willing to bet that he slows down on his IS activities when he starts his residency though. 636

Does no one read USATODAY? In today's tech section they feature IS exclusive nico_blue aka Nick Monu, touting his six figure income from this part-time job! Oh boy, I can smell the throngs of new applicants to IS as we speak ![]() "Brown University medical student Nick Monu supplements his income by selling photographs online. He uses the "stock" photography service iStockphoto.com, offering generic photos of people and places that can be used in brochures, magazines, websites and billboards. Monu known as "nico_blue" on iStockphoto pulls in a six-figure income from his part-time gig. One photo even earned him $5,000. It's a feel-good image of two senior women, one African American and one white, smiling for the camera" 637
General Photography Discussion / Re: Is Digital Dead?« on: March 07, 2009, 20:19 »
Film has a different 'feel' from digital. Not better, not worse... different.
The only real downside I can see is that digital does not have the same sort of cost per frame that film has. Hence we now have hard drives full of our digital diarrhea. Really, how may keepers from a shoot of 400 frames are there? I love the look of Velvia for some things and used to shoot ASA 25 black and white for the exceptional fine grain it had. But I don't miss darkroom fumes or the expense of all that chemistry. Anyway, time marches on and digital can only get better with time. It may not be able to surpass an 8X10 piece of film quite yet, but few ever shot that way to begin with. My father was a photographer and an optical engineer. If he were to be alive today he would be ecstatic about all he could now do in the digital darkroom. 638
General Stock Discussion / Re: Your opinion about commercial value of the image« on: March 05, 2009, 12:12 »
Whitechild, I think you should submit it directly to those humour magazines. They will probably pay you more than you might get from selling it on micro. You might even get a photo credit.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: another swing...« on: February 25, 2009, 13:44 »
I know that 2.0 is not yet implemented or at least FULLY implemented, but I am at the moment happy with whatever algorithm is in place.
Feb. is a MBE for me and my last four downloads were all files that have never sold before and are all at least seven months old. It does not bother me that newer files are currently getting the short end of the stick. I think this is just the final tweak before the real best match kicks in. I am an exclusive... so lets see if this supposed new swing completely kills me next month ![]() PS: I agree with the previous posts that it is really the buyers that should be dictating how best match works. Without buyers we are nothing (painfully obvious, eh?) 644
