Ah, lovely!
Both of you :) Great info, thanks for posting !
Leaf did a great job squeezing out that part of info out of Tangie in the last 5 secs. Looking at the cutting in those last 5 sec, there must have been going on some pushing in the background.  ;)

I was very interested in hearing what Dreamstime said about keywording.
Great post that sums it all up! (+ a heart).
One of the problems in proper keywording is that many current microstock photographers are not native English speakers, and they use some of the keywording scavenging tools online, not really understanding what all those words actually mean.

As for DT, you have the chance to report keyword spam very easily by flagging the image. According to Achilles (DT CEO) this really works. I don't like to flag under my contributor account (out of fear for retaliation) but you can bet I do it a lot via my buyer's account!

The search engine of DT is pretty well known, but the problem is most independents upload to several micro sites and all are a bit different, especially how the title and description are handled. So you will have to make a compromise in your meta as a contributor.

I just had a look at my latest DT sales of this month, and they were all bought by the keyword  N/A. That means by a visual search starting from categories, random browsing, Google images, or "similars" in other's portfolio.
Keywords alone might not be the whole story.

Here I thought we were all descendants from multiple mutant generations of Australopithecus afarensis from Ethiopia and Kenya!
Caucasians seem to be leftovers from a few that survived the last ice age in caves in Anatolia and Spain. This genetic bottleneck explains the high genetic similarity between most humans nowadays since in those periods, not the classical Darwinian natural selection but genetic drift was the name of the game.

There have been several migration waves from East-Africa along the highway of the Nile along the Middle East and the Southern Asian shores, up till Australia. All these settlements except the ones of the last wave died out. One of the early waves remained in Australia (but their breadcrumbs going there were wiped out) as the aboriginals which are genetically quite different from current Asians.

Also don't forget the non-HSS (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) strains like the Neanderthals that coexisted with HSS in Europe till just 30,000 years ago. They were probably a leftover from a very early migration. HSS only migrated (the Out of Africa theory) to Europe/Asia a mere 150K years ago.
Western Africans also are genetically more different from the rest as they have been trapped under the Sahara and by the dense rain forest in Central Africa. Their only serious migration was the slave trade to the Americas.

The Asian eye folding may just be an amplification of a random mutation by genetic drift in a very small population. That drift stopped now since they are with 2.5 billion.
The skin albedo (melanin enrichment) is not really genetic but is steered by modulators of genes that can adapt 1000x more quickly than genes. It has been said any population migrating south will have a black skin within 15,000 years only (see the Tamils), and a white skin migrating north as skin albedo is a trade-off between death by skin cancer and death by lack of Vitamin D.

Boom diada boom diada, it's a wonderful world.  ;)

Dbvirago posted about this site long ago, with useful info. The OP is just a referral hunter, as usual. My guess is he has nothing to do with photography or illustrations.

You could first read the only two blogs I find really interesting (as to your question):

http://www.microstockdiaries.com/
http://www.microstockinsider.com/

In my opinion, ShutterStock is the one to go for first. Before you do, put your images up full size here for review. You can use dropbox.com for that. Just put on a light watermark but upload full size full quality.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Posted up North . Backup problem.
« on: September 01, 2010, 16:38 »
Everything is crap, possibly; even external disks fail. The only certainty is in redundance, as one must be really unlucky for all of the copies to fail at the same time.
An external disk can fail, but if you just put it online to write backups, it will last much longer than a DVD that degrades in time, even if it sits in a box. Writing DVD's takes much longer than a backup on an external disk. And finally DVD's are much more expensive per GB. Redundancy is always a must, and one of the copies should stay unpowered in another place. Fire? I had it. Lightning? I had it. The EMP? Not yet.

^^^ Yes, it's scientific data, since the ash from the Yellowstone is found all around the world. And yes, we can do something about it if we manage to run away on time with our families from the most endangered areas. :)
1) There are more supervolcanoes on earth than the one under Yellowstone.
2) One of the previous eruptions of those almost wiped out humanity. There were just a few hundreds (some say 2,000) specimens left. This genetic bottleneck has been shown by worldwide DNA research.

Just wondering if the owners/employees/reviewers from one site submit their images to other site? or is this a big no no?
Maybe.  ;D

^ Yes. Although I doubt many people leave any significant amounts there. Well, there may be exceptions, like FD :]]
Ah, you have been spying on the DT forum!  :P - Yes I forgot to ask payout for a while and I was stuck with about 1300$. As soon as I found out the rule would be applied after Sept 15, I rushed to ask payout. I hope they'll do it before Sept 15.  ;D

I have an anonymous hub page. The whole scheme is page views and click through. Most of the people making anything are simply information (SPAM!) factories.
Of course. If you have good and readable content, put it on your own blog. Repeated content on the net (scam hubpages and your own blog) will downgrade you on Google.

1. Noise in the background; bad composition: the monkey is cropped out in a bad way.
2. Top of plant out of focus; no commercial value whatsoever; boring composition.
3. Cool, but the bear is slightly unsharp; what lens do you use?

Three wildlife shots won't you make pass iStock. They need a variety: nature, people and preferably some still life/product shot/interior.

It might be a bit lighter, but its an f/4.... too slow to be much use to me - I'll stick with the 24-70.
It's a bit short for portraits and I have to stick with it since I don't have money to burn.  ;) I was thinking of a Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 L USM instead, so I can do portraits and wildlife/surfers/urban. I'm still canvassing what to buy for a longer range. Have to check on the Canon EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 DO IS USM which seems very handy to carry around.

I thought Art was all about light and shade. :P
Stock isn't Art. Stock is about light and light.  :P

Come to think of it, did DT have some sort of system where contributors received reward for reporting keyword spam?
You'll get 0.02$ if you suggest a number of missing keywords for an image, that's all. You have a month to correct a reported image. There are two options: either you neglected the comment, or the comment was too late. Sometimes, DT has very long lags on comments. Keymastering will cost you 0.4$.

641
I didn't know that having 50 could hurt your search position.  I don't think it was always that way.  Wonder when it changed?  Might explain why my sales there lately seem to be dropping...?
Not exactly what she said. She said that if you want to rank high in one specific search, less but targeted keywords are better in the relevancy search. Of course, she said, if you want to turn up in more searches, more keywords are better. FYI: when buying on DT, I always turn the relevancy search off and I use downloads. Relevancy gives too many similars. With dowloads, the buyers before you did the hard work of sifting out the images with high impact.

642
How big is your port there Szakaly, and can you give us a link to it?
Haha, Ivan, you're adopting my style ;-) - I don't even read posts of these new anonymous'es any more.

643
Not much new except the last 5 seconds when she had a (provoked) slip of the tongue telling that 25% of the buyers search by categories. I heard inside rumors like that from another site too. That might give a backlash to sites without categories.

644
DVDs are crap. They last maximum 3 years and they take too long to write. Who needs DVDs when USB external disks are 120 euro for 2TB? I travel between East and West 4x per year with one of those in my cargo pants pockets and a long T draped over it. (Unchecked luggage is still 7-12kg).

645
Nobody so far has touched on the important point of measureability, if you cant measure it you can't manage it.
Correct since you can check your own Google Analytics, and not those of third sites where you can just guess.

New Sites - General / Re: is cluster shot still doing biz?
« on: August 29, 2010, 16:14 »
I hear you FD-regular I always had a problem that you could not keep buyers 'locked in a box' with your images when they searched from your store page - Ive just looked and they 'cant escape' anymore they've fixed that. if you send them to 'store' page (user.clustershot.com) then the only way out is the clustershot link at the bottom of the page.
Well whatever. When they said they wouldn't make clear separate licenses and not offer sizes, i thought I should quit. Yes I had a "my store" but with a traffic of just 255/day at my site, I don't know who was going to look at that store. There was also the Paypal confusion at that time. For 50$ (add 70$) Smugmug is much better. But if you're happy, that's all that counts.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: I'm on Thinkstock?
« on: August 28, 2010, 21:38 »
Thanks for posting that, I did not even think to look there. They have very neatly disguised these opt-ins and outs so that they can't be found. And guess what, I am opted back in for Partner Programs! I unchecked it to opt out. Went to another site, went back and it's clicked again. So I am experiencing that whole problem. See the bug reported earlier in this thread and posted by packerguy.
Do you really believe that bug crap? The world's best microstock site, the inventor of microstock, the best, Sol Invictus, can't even address a simple bug like that?  ;D
After the magnificent wrecking of their site they call Fck5, I can't even find where I have to uncheck. It's harder than canceling your Facebook account and those guys are experts in hiding links.
Seems like they want to drag you into StinkThock in a sneaky way. I don't want to be there of a "meazly" 25 dollarcents.

Update: - just checked the well-hidden (on purpose!)  link
My Account > Preferences > My uploads > Manage collections
and yes, I was opted in. Tried to opt out in all possible ways but I'm still opted in when I revisited the page. Is iStock a bunch of criminals? I can't even yell at their forums since I never go there and I have no intention to waste time to look for the right board.  ??? :o :-\

Update 2: I found a board on IS where they where YAYing about the partner program and I let my horses go there. I accused them of a sneaky breach of contract. That must have been my 2nd post in 5 years at IS and they can ban me now. I just don't like their sneaky style of opting me in against my wish and then deep-hiding a link that doesn't. Period.

Exclusives get more than 25 cents.
Ah! Yes, there is a lot of racism around (never mind).

And for the record, I didn't opt into the partner program until I went exclusive. So no I'm not taking a measly 25 cents per download.
Huh? You opted in or not? It seems you opted in (unless I misunderstood) so you knew you were going to get a measly 25 cents, no?
