Mine dropped by 50% in a 6 week period between mid april and end of may.

This week is up and down massively.  I cant see any consistency or trend - its just a mess.
This week ive had a day of numbers so low i thought it was Saturday, the day later i got about 2x the usual volume.

Their stock has gone up slightly.
Not a shock as all the changes directly benefit the share holders.

Whoever got that accepted, well done!
Better yet, extra marks for somehow getting "fuck you" accepted as a keyword.

Not bothered hiding the uploading ID because i dont think he cares - he currently has 1 file online and its that!

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS sale from last month disappeared
« on: June 04, 2020, 00:20 »
Looking on the forum a few people have had refunds against them recently.

Id never seen that before with SS.

630
Based on sales at other sites, it appears that the smaller subscriptions of 10 to 50 images per month are more popular that the large subscriptions of 350+ images per month.  Based on this experience at other sites, I assumed the new structure might not be as big of disaster as most anticipated but now that we are three days in, that is not the case.  Why are all sales coming in around the 10 - 15 cent size.  Its hard to believe so many use the smaller subscriptions at the other agencies but no one does at Shutterstock.

Im not sure they do use them at other sites.  Also dont forget just HOW cheap SS is.  Its more affordable to buy a crazy big pack.

631
I've just noticed now they;ve fixed the earnings page that i get far less for On Demand now as well.

Previously i got $2.85 for every OD sale.

This month im getting $2.53 and $2.27 for them all.

This is level 5.

So its not just subs we're losing on...

632
For most people who want a little image to stick on a website, blog or small article im sure they do have enough.
Whilst i agree some things are time sensitive (Medical, aviation, tech etc) a lot arent.
A palm tree on a beach is a palm tree on a beach regardless of 2005 or 2020 for example.

So *most* is likely covered.  There'll still be enough contributors to top-up their database.  As much as we'd like to see it, SS image library is going to continue to grow.

Not everyone spends ages looking for exactly the right image.  I know a lot who buy off stock and they're writing articles and so on with deadlines.  They just want the image that'll do the job to illustrate whats needed in the shortest possible time, submit the article then get started on the next.  Quality hasnt got to be great, just adequate.
Thats the difference between a designer and an author.
SS quite likely will satisfy the latter.  And they'll push offset/custom for the rest.

633
Not really.  They'd have planned and modelled all of this months ago.  They're just going through the checklist.

This take from the SS forum (several people received this copy/paste reply):

Quote
We are Deeply saddened on the fact that there is a slight cut down in the earnings that Shutterstock used to offer earlier.

The reason of Decline in earnings has been the uncertain pandemic which has caused a huge effect on all the businesses including ours.

The world wide conditions are critical at the moment. We believe that with the passage of time things are expected to improve and once it would happen then we would try to raise the earning opportunities with Shutterstock.

You can learn more about it on the following link https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/contributor-earnings-update

We need your support during this harsh time around.

Obviously thats complete BS.  This is a company that made several hundred million dollars of profit and has plenty of cash lying around to weather the 2 MONTHS.

A change like this would be planned far far ahead of the pandemic.  Its been tightening for a while.  Just recently the opt out of sensitive removed, subs for videos and so on and now this.  Its a long term, planned strategy.

They're attempting to pretend to be sympathetic.  Maybe some people will go "aww cute", most wont accept it.

Looks like they've turned to page 2 of their plan.  The sympathetic copy/paste and the alleged divide and rule special offer to other people.

SS counter-attack if you like.

635
The divide and rule part of the playbook.  Used it with BS takeover as well.

They've moved to stage 2.

636

This is so annoying.  Sale after sale for crazy amounts.  And this is level 5.

Only 3 appeared in subs, the rest in SODs so i guess they still haven't fixed what they said they'd fixed yesterday.

Also a few $3 to $4 sales for amounts i cant find on any existing chart so i guess another special discount or similar.

And a $7.09 video sale that also doesn't tally with any previous sale or commission.

...and that highlights another issue.  The system is no so opaque we have no idea what people are paying for media, no idea what we're getting.  They have so many deals with clients, agencies, special offers, discounts that its impossible for any of us to work out if we're getting paid fairly and correctly or not.

I'd agree.  Complaining about SS from the contributor side of things is very unlikely to accomplish anything.  They'd have planned and factored this in.

The only way to actually make a point is hit the company *customer* side and stock price side.  That is the only bit thats important to them.

If contributors go, to them no problem.  There are plenty more.

If BUYERS start to go thats different.

So a campaign to communicate the issues to current and potential buyers and customers is likely to be more effective than anything contributor side.

Of course, most buyers dont think of or care about contributors.  They just want the right image at lowest possible price so its hard.

IF you think its bad new wait until January when even those 17c downloads will be down to 10c for everyone....

SS aren't stupid.  They'd have planned this, modelled this, worked out how many will go and worked out its still fine.  Cynical but they know exactly what they're doing.
Its not going to finish the company.

They'll lose a certain percentage.  They're ready for that.
A bigger number might stop uploading new stuff.  No problem.  They have loads of stuff.
Most will get angry, shout and just eventually accept it.  This is the majority.

SS are many things but not stupid.  They know the impact, knew people wont be happy but have calculated, and based on other companies that long term it'll benefit them.

639
Im seeing sub sales of 10c, 12c and 17c.  And im at level 5.

So in January i guess those will all be nearer 10 cents.

Im not yet feeling the motivation and fairness they promised me in the email.

I'm still unconvinced it's a healthy company at all.
The hordes of very unhappy customers, the fact anyone can steal their content for free and so on.
To be this looks like a cost cutting measure to help a company with some fairly serious issues.

641
They are also deleting posts on the forum.

This is what, in our marvelous liberal democrat society, we call freedom of speech

Given their kowtowing to China's censorship, we shouldn't be surprised at their attitude toward freedom of speech. Really disgusted.

Big contrast with Alamy when they dropped commissions from 50% to 40%, they let people vent and came on the forums and interacted with people as well as responding to contributor emails. They are far from perfect but at least they don't ban people, instead they try to engage with their contributors.

Even iStock outlined *exactly* what the new structure was before it went live (i cant believe i just said that...)

Their trustpilot *from customers* is atrocious.

But realistically the only way is to talk to the buyers.  Commenting on their own FB etc will do nothing.  They expect it, theyre ready for it and they're already deleting posts as fast as they can.  You need to g direct to the buyers.

And yes, use TOR and other anonymous tools - they ARE actively culling accounts of people who speak out (and it seems keeping the earnings).

Looks that way - they cant even get the robbing contributors bit correct.  Everything is appearing as an SOD.

Aren't these new 0.10$ sales that keep popping in just...cute? So fuzzy and sweet and tiny....  And that they are also SODs instead of just SUBs, where we expected the 0.10$ sales, makes all of this so unexpected and exciting!
 ::)

Thats interesting in a way.

We were told the SODs for sub value were things like FB adverts and so on NOT subscriptions.
So it seems we get 10 cents for those as well NOT just subscriptions.

646

Indeed.  We have.  Smug comment there...

And Oringer approves all these changes. It could not happen without him.

Of course he's the majority shareholder as far as i can see.
Don't forget the decline started ages ago - the huge library expansion, more and cheaper video packages etc.  He's full aware and either agreed or didnt object to it.

People here waiting for the new scheme to take effect... why? Why haven't you disabled your portfolio alredy, nothing good will follow of this.

Maybe because at this point in time, some people simply cant afford to lose hundreds or thousands of dollars just to make a point...

Nobody sensible is going to want to voluntarily throw away a few hundred or thousand dollars with 5 days notice.  Most people will keep the plan until they've sorted out an alternative.

Id venture the low earners are the people who could most likely afford to disable stuff as its a small percentage of their income.

I also suspect lots will just accept SS has become just another mid-grade agency like IS and leave the profile.

SS would no doubt have modelled this.

Even if they change subscription plans our cut at level 4 is still $0,38 per sub no?

What am I missing here?

The 350 and 700 image sub packs the level 4 cut works out a lot nearer 10 cents than 0.38.  SS have merely said it "wont be less than 10 cents" for new sub rates.

This is the issue, they knew how bad it was, knew how much people would hate it but lacked the basic professionalism to even tell people what'd they'd get paid in 5 days time.
They clearly knew, but refused to say.

I did mention this. But got banned ;)

SS drop this bombshell then lack the grace or even professionalism to have prepared some stats so we (especially those of us who make a living from this) aren't left mulling over whether we will be able to pay our bills. Even worse, dropping the bombshell  'not less then 10 cents' . This is unforgivable
