It appeared to go back to normal yesterday but has been down for the last several hours. Is everyone else experiencing problems or is it just me?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Check Out PicturEngine
« on: November 03, 2012, 05:39 »
Justin,

Hmmmm, I'm interested enough to be asking a few questions but these will be deal makers or breakers for me:

1: Functionality is coming soon for illustrations and vectors - will this be in the beta period or will I have to part with my $480 and hope it turns up soon?

2: If I take the risk and part with $480, I will be doing so because I don't currently have my own website but would like to sell directly, and not pay as much as 85% to some stock sites selling my work. As I don't have my own website, I don't have any personal EULA in place and, as I am not legally trained, I'm not sure I am qualified to write one. You say that we have the freedom to set our own prices but I can't find anything with regard to licensing agreements so can you enlighten me please?

3: You mention a cost of $40 per month, (which is a little misleading if you have to pay it all upfront and can't actually pay it monthly without being charged extra), and there are additional cloud storage charges on top of this. Will I have separate access to this storage and be able to effectively use this as a cloud back-up for my own files?

4: As I am looking into the possibilities of having my own website in the not-too-distant future, I may wish to drop from the $40 plan to the $10 plan. Will that be possible, or will I be locked into the $40 plan for a full year?

5: If I proceed, and you host portfolio so that I can benefit from %100 of the sale price, who collects the money? You mention PayPal fitting with your system, so are you collecting money on my behalf or will I be paid directly by the customer?

Thanks,

very KuriousKat

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT's official policy on 'similars'?
« on: October 23, 2012, 14:15 »
With a mentality that rejects 2013 calendars for being too similar to the ones I submitted last year, I'm afraid it just isn't worth the effort.

I may not be a big player but I make DT a couple of hundred dollars a month. However, I can't be bothered with the aggro - not to mention the increasingly difficult task of maintaining an 80% acceptance rate - so I have given up on them.

It's a shame, as I started with DT and have always had a bit of a soft spot for them but, business is business, and I'm not about to modify my work to fit their needs - what they reject sells well on other sites and, pretty soon, DT will have 'limited stock' and their buyers will look to other suppliers.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Which sites did you gave up on?
« on: October 09, 2012, 03:35 »
Gave up on Fotolia a long time back and pulled my port. I really wasn't sure I liked their business practices.

Gave up on Stockfresh for lack of sales and was about to pull from Superhug before they saved me the trouble!

I am now giving up, reluctantly, on Dreamstime. I like them as a site but their 'similars' policy is driving me to insanity. I am having a rush on other sites for 2013 calendars but DT turned them all down as they were 'too similar' to the ones I uploaded, (and sold), last year! Go figure? This was the last of numerous ridiculous rejections and my time is best spent uploading to the sites that will accept and regularly sell my work.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Heard of Colourbox?
« on: September 18, 2012, 08:43 »
I recently had someone copying one of my vector designs, not 100% exact but 95% copy and 100% copy of my keywords. I found the copy doing a google image search and it turned up on Shutterstock and Colourbox. I emailed both, and Shutterstock responded by removing the image almost immediately. Colourbox, on the other hand, wrote me a polite but curt email saying that the image was not close enough to my image so 'tough luck'.

It put me off completely and, coupled with the terrible commission they pay, they are now well and truly bottom of the Microstock heap, in my opinion.

I used to get more or less 1 per week, 0 in August so far :-\

About the same for me. Average 4-5 per month for 2012 but none so far in August.

I guess now is the time to try and search the image in question to, see if it is turning up as a free download somewhere...

« on: July 26, 2012, 17:50 »
Just saw it. Different so got to get used to it. What do you think of the Contributor page facelift? Is the navigation easier now to you?

Decent. But they got rid of the links to our portfolios in the top right corner. So now we must manually type in the page the buyers see of our portfolios. I sent them feedback about it.

No, it's part of the menu. Click on Portfolio -> Catalog Manager

I prefer the old way with a direct link, but I can always bookmark it.

Or just click on the 'your image gallery' hyperlink. There we previously two links to your portfolio and they have only removed one of them

Shutterstock.com / Re: How are sales going?
« on: July 24, 2012, 15:34 »
From 1 or 2 a month to 1 or 2 a day? that just doesn't sound right mate, this shift is too dramatic.
From 56USD to 840USD worth of EL's in a month?

Sounds right to me.  I had exactly the same experience.

I long for that experience!

KuriousKat: And another thing, a couldn't even be talking about your sales, since you're anonymous ;)

I guess you don't notice that if you're not affected. I know exactly how you feel, it's the same thing when I got those crazy rejections at SS, when they rejected 50%+ of the batches for no reason (they were accepted elsewhere and usually also at SS a few months later). Or when I got an image that sells at least 10 times a day on SS+FT (it sold way over 20x yesterday for example) rejected at IS, where in fact those type of shots are my best earners and sometimes earn me more than at all other sites combined. I just know you lost a grand on a single photo, but hey, that's life...

I think that's the case - you don't notice until it happens to you. Earlier this year, some on the forums were complaining, and I just thought they needed to upload more/improve standards/find a new angle, etc. as my sales were just great! Now, I am at the opposite side of the fence and understand what it feels like. I stand to drop a good few hundred dollars on SS this month and, comparing to the last 4 years, this is not just a summer slowdown.

Sorry to see you are having problems, however it is nice to see you willing to share your objective viewpoints based on two different sets of experience on SS.

Contrary to what some would claim, there are submitters that are experiencing serious issues, while the majority are not.  If SS were serious about fixing the numerous issues they would have them solved by now. I am beginning to wonder if SS ever intends on making the playing field level for everyone.

I am wondering if the Skype Interviews, that SS are setting up with some contributors, will provide an opportunity to discuss some of these issue?

Haha, you would have to save me from the funny farm if I have to go through their upload process for my whole portfolio!  ;) ;D

SS is an agency that require to upload constantly in order to mantain/increase sales. is not like DT or FT

That's not the case for over a year ;)

Like KuriousKat says.... this is not applying for everyone...

Yeah well, it depends on the quality of photos you're uploading. It's better to UL 8 good shots than 80 rubbish shots (not saying at all his were rubbish, but that could be the case and usually is)

Not saying all his were rubbish......but usually is the case! Thanks for that, Wut  :o

Firstly, the images were accepted by Shuttterstock, so are reasonable quality. Secondly, the same images are selling quite well elsewhere, I am only noticing the decline on Shutterstock.

I haven't suddenly dropped my standards, something has changed at SS. If I had uploaded 80 new images a year ago I would have seen DLs from them as soon as they hit the database. CGartist, I suggest you read the SS forums, as it will give an insight into a lot of the problems many contributors are experiencing.

Please read it correctly ;) . And for the second part, as in usually is, I meant generally, with most ppl ;)

That's OK then. As long as we are clear that all my images are super-amazing and deserved to be constantly downloaded!

On a more serious note, I agree that there are a lot of very average images, so it will of course depend on the quality and variety of images uploaded. However, reading the SS forums will confirm that many very talented contributors are suffering a decline in sales. This is not just about hobbyists with small ports, complaining that they are not getting payouts every month.

Wish I could say the same. My sales are falling since the changes to the search, dispute constant uploading and approvals. I have been building month on month for four years, and now I'm back to where I was a year ago. Nothing new is selling - I've had about 80 images approved in the last week and about 3 subs sales from them - seriously wondering whether it is worth all the effort anymore.

Very disheartening  :(

General Stock Discussion / Re: New Microstock Keyword Tool

Thank you!

I have been using the tool and prefer it to the one I have been using. I think that maybe you have now made it perfect :)

646
My best sellers at Shutterstock have sold nearly 1000 times each and are selling pretty well at all other sites I submitted them to. GLStock rejected them all for various reasons - go figure!

General Stock Discussion / Re: New Microstock Keyword Tool
« on: April 03, 2012, 03:59 »
I love it but would request an option to exclude keywords.

I did a search on 'tomato background' and got a lot of tomatoes isolated on white backgrounds - if I could just exclude the keyword 'isolated' or 'white' it would be a pretty perfect tool :)

648
Thanks Microbius and Stockmaketer  :)

I haven't had any sales yet and have everything set at $10. Perhaps I'll drop down some of the simpler images to compete with the masses. It does look like the majority of contributors price at the lowest level.

I really like the site and the upload process, etc. but I think it's a shame that their system prices a vector the same as a large jpeg. I would be happier if I could set the large jpeg to $6 but price the vector at $10.

649
I like the look of GL Stock and have signed up. However, I really don't know where I should be setting my price level. I sell a mix of photos and vectors and wondered what the rest of you do?

What are sales like there? Do any of you have prices set at different levels and, if so, do you notice that the lower priced images sell better?

 ??? :-\

650
Before running to the defence of the 'original' artist who's work has been copied, you would do well to search and see if that was actually an 'original idea'. It may have become a best seller but was not necessarily unique when submitted.....

Don't get me wrong, I don't like blatant copying any more than the next person but we do need to be clear about who we are defending. Is this a case of a copycat copying another copycat?
