iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: December 08, 2010, 22:55 »
Any thoughts on who would buy Getty/Istock?
It will be Google - mark my words!!
I have always thought that ebay would begin buying microstock sites someday. Ebay has the knowhow for handling a lot of small transactions among zilliions of buyers and sellers. And ebay owns Paypal.

But Google is a good bet too, given that the heart of microstock is the search engines, and nobody knows search engines better, and Google has made what 6 acquisitions already this year?

A dark horse would be Amazon.

...I do not understand why they would not just suspend "offending" pictures...
I don't understand either. Yesterday I got an email from SS that they had deleted one of my images. "We have removed the following images that you uploaded.... deleted because: Quality control - Removed per legal. Do not resubmit."

A potential copyright/trademark issue. I understand their reasons though I don't agree with them in the case of the image they removed. No big deal, not worth arguing about or getting upset. But I sure am glad that they didn't turn off my whole port! Then I would have freaked out for sure!!

« on: November 30, 2010, 17:03 »
Putting the squeeze on buyers and sellers both is....wait for it...."unsustainable".

Also agree with Sharpshot - scaring away buyers is not in anybody's interest.
We all now know that IS decided at some point that it could do whatever it wanted to squeeze its long time contributors. The cut in royalties, the Agency collection, take its favoritism for its pets to new highs (or lows), etc. IS would let us whine and 'vent' on the forums for a while and then everything would always go back to normal.

But I don't think anyone will forget that one word 'unsustainable'.

IS might as well rename itself 'unstustainableStock.com'.

« on: November 29, 2010, 13:07 »
From now on I'm going to upload so much to the other sites that IS sooner or later becomes unimportant to my overall earnings.
This has been my plan. I stopped uploading to IS a few months ago. My IS sales have dropped in half, but the sales at other sites more than make up for the loss. Why should I contribute to IS when they want to drive non-exclusives out of business? IS is the enemy now, how else can you look at it?

Re Thanksgiving weekend. It was my best weekend ever at SS, and was pretty good elsewhere (not IS of course).

Grrr, an EL on today Wednesday and rather large credit sales on Monday. Tuesday just one sub. Life can be cruel. I always read about other people winning the lottery. Very depressing, that's why I never buy lottery tickets. ;D
Same here. My Tuesday DT sales, were half those of Monday. And usually Tuesday beats Monday. Oh well. That's why I never play slot machines.  :)

IS might want to also watch out for the tax authorities coming to gun for them, if it decides that IS exclusivity has made thousands of photographers "de facto" employees.
This is a good point. One of main tests the IRS uses to determine whether a person is an independent contractor or an employee is: Is the person free to do similar work for a competing company?

If not, the person is likely to be considered an employee.

Just saw this:
http://cnnmoney.mobi/primary/_JqlcIN-iSsBrlcHG

"Senate Finance Committee head Max Baucus says he will introduce legislation to repeal the unpopular tax form expansion."
Hey that's my Senator! And what a lame jackass he is. Up for re-election in 2012, I think. I guess he has decided to finally do something non-destructive, after all these years in office.

Tomorrow huh. And wouldn't you know it I am having one of my Best Mondays Ever at DT. Probably won't get a single sale tomorrow.

And I don't want an iPad or whatever they call that Apple thingy. If I win it I hereby promise that I will donate it to Madelaide in case one of those kids asked Santa for one. (And I do have some images pending at DT, though I doubt somehow if a vector is going to be #10,000,000  :D)

So I see by the article that the 1099 tax law is a part of Obamacare? I did not know that. Health care reform that makes me sick.  :'(
Nice to see my normally useless congressman Dan Lungren actually sponsored a repeal of the bill...and he has support from the White House as of November 4.

« on: November 22, 2010, 12:43 »
so it sounds that the rendering results will be same without additional graphic card, just the time is longer?

does 3ds max run on a mac computer? i saw their faq saying one can install it on a Windows system partition, with boot camp of a mac. Does it run slower?
I think that the new rendering engines which use graphic cards, such as Thea Render, will only work using the graphics card. I don't know about future versions of Mental Ray and the other rendering engines which come with 3D software, surely at least some versions of them will continue to work with just the main system.

From the Autodesk FAQ (I have never owned an Apple computer so I don't really know anything about this)
Can I install Autodesk 3ds Max on a Mac?
Yes, you can install Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 software on a Macintosh computer on a Windows operating system
partition. The system must use Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac to manage a dual OS configuration and
meet the minimum system requirements.

Gpu based rendering is coming fast.  Renderengines like vray have it in their next version 2.0.   with good cards the rendering can be many times faster than cpu.
This is correct and something to consider. Right now, most or all rendering engines which use graphics cards require you to have a card which is CUDA compliant. Probably that means an NVIDIA card. So you should do a little research on  that when planning your hardware purchases.

Another positive about GL is that they let you set your own price for each image.

I think a lot of contributors don't realize that. You can change your images' prices any time, one at a time, or send GL an email to change the price of all your images at once.

I'm glad to see somebody can keep up the 100% day celebrations :)

You might say that it's quite "sustainable."
I saw IS announce in a thread that they will NEVER have another 100% royalty day, even for exclusives only.

New Sites - General / Re: vectorstock
« on: November 16, 2010, 12:57 »
Vectorstock has some good and bad things about it.
:-[ On the bad side, you have to resize your thumbnails to dimensions which no other stock agency uses. And, of course, the 1 credit issue, mentioned above.

:) On the good side, VS pays faster than any other site. Sometimes on the same day you request payment. And the site is fast and pretty easy to use.

Yes, so many jokes from iStock. iStock has become iLaughingstock.

You don't need to integrate anything, the newer versions of 3dmax come with mental ray that does great renders if handled properly,
Mentalray does come with MAX, but the vast majority of professionals use VRay to render.

Check out the Autodesk site for the differences between 3DS Max and 3DS Max Design. I believe that  3DS Max Design is mostly for architects. I am pretty sure that what you want is regular 3DS Max, NOT 3DS Max Design.

On choosing 3D rendering software: If you have the money (Max+VRay will cost you about $4500, I think), Max is the industry standard for general polygonal modeling, rendering, and games. (Autodesk Maya is the standard for 3D animation; Rhino is the standard for NURBS modeling). If you don't have the money for Max, check out C4D (as mentioned in the posts above) or Modo, by Luxology.

Veer / Re: Unacceptable review times at Veer
« on: November 04, 2010, 20:01 »
I think the review times will improve when, as arquiplay77, said, the dash for cash backlog is finally out of the way. I do vectors and don't really submit that many images, but I have over 100 pending at Veer, and have had for a long time.

My Veer sales there are inconsistent, up and down, but I think in the long run up.  Veer's site has improved immensely since its inception. Uploading vectors is easy, viewing stats has improved, and the site looks good overall. They appear to be in the race for the long haul and capable of doing what it takes to improve.

« on: November 04, 2010, 15:33 »
Definitely love the people and the easy upload, although upload had some issues for me today but that seems to have resolved itself :)
The problems could be because the big changes there yesterday - they started accepting people photos. Overall I think that went smoothly for them.

I got a sale at GL myself yesterday, and am now working on my second payout. ;D
