How can you possibly say an elegantly and intelligently written statement is Trump-like? Trump wouldn't understand half of the words in there much less their meaning. Trump likes Twitter because 140 characters is about the limit of his thinking capacity. Trump writes and speaks like a fourth grader - he doesn't come close to the way Tryingmybest writes.
(Full disclosure - I have no idea who Tryingmybest is other than what they write in these forums) 654
Off Topic / Re: OMG America!!!« on: March 17, 2016, 11:23 »Obama hates Trump. I'm sure you missed a few - a lot more hate him than that! Of course it isn't him so much as his policies and what he says that are the problem. Statistically speaking, the only people who love him are poorly educated, underemployed, angry white guys. Oh, and Vladimir Putin. Trump is about as bad as you can get, other than Kim Jong-un, of course (who also has endorsed Trump, BTW). 656

No free photos... ever.Wow, do hard work and give them free and if you don't give they will bury you down in search. I can only analyze my own data. For me, average RPDL per year on DP ranged from 0.35-0.55 from 2010-2014 but was 0.74 during 2015, so it seemed to go up after the change. So far this month have had more larger sales but it is too early to say what it will be for the year - certainly within the range of previous years, no real drop after the change, fortunately. That is RPDL. For total earnings, those have increased every year on DP despite not uploading anything in over a year. I don't think that will continue this year unless I start uploading again. 657
Off Topic / Re: OMG America!!!« on: March 17, 2016, 09:25 »Don't take it too literally. If NK has the capability, an ICBM missile defense system will be deployed in Asia as well as Hawaii. The missile may not be able to reach Manhattan. If they have first strike capability and it's DEFCON5 and there was no way to stop it from reaching Manhattan, then yes, surgically nuke them first before they launch theirs. It's very sad and scary to be casually talking about this as a possible future. Kim has the same psychological profile as Trump - a narcissistic psychopath - except that with absolute control over his country he is even more dangerous. They both have serious hair issues as well, although I don't know anything about the size of Kim's hands. Hopefully the electorate in the US can deal with the threat of Trump. I just hope the North Korean military will take care of the Kim problem so it doesn't come to anything else. They must realize that nutcase could have them executed on a whim, hopefully one of them will take action just as some of Hitler's officers tried to assassinate him once they realized he was taking them all down. 658

No free photos... ever.Wow, do hard work and give them free and if you don't give they will bury you down in search. I had not thought about the extortionate aspect of this but you are definitely right. DP has been doing OK lately, with more high-value DLs rather than strictly subs (as it was for a while there). If this scheme leads to lower rankings and fewer DLs then they will just lose contributors. Other companies with this kind of scheme have implied that it would increase sales but this is the first one to explicitly say they will increase your ranking. Apparently they think contributors are too stupid to notice that this is bad. I assume the only people who would opt in to this are those with very low sales and poor images. If those people get higher placement in searches it will frustrate customers and they will just go elsewhere. This scheme has the potential to alienate both contributors and customers - brilliant! 660
Off Topic / Re: OMG America!!!« on: March 16, 2016, 15:51 »Behind all the rhetoric is a successful businessman who has ran a gigantic organization with a structure similar to a government. Not even close - there is very little similarity to running a business versus government, the goals are completely different (i.e., making profits for owners versus not making a profit). Trump is terrible at budgets and planning - his businesses declared bankruptcy four times in only 18 years due to unsustainable spending. Thanks to the largesse of the courts he was able to walk away and reorganize. If he bankrupts the US Government - which is exactly what will happen based on his economic proposals - he can't just forgive the debts, we taxpayers will be on the hook for the rest of our lives. We still haven't paid off the huge debts accumulated under Reagan and Bush, a Trump budget would just be the final nail in the coffin. Trump certainly has tapped into something and he is very good at telling people what they want to hear and pumping up a certain kind of crowd. However, his speaking and writing are both at about a fourth-grade vocabulary level which is not encouraging. He clearly suffers from - in fact is a textbook case according to many psychologists - narcissistic personality disorder, and very likely is a charismatic psychopath. Not the kind of person I want to see in charge of anything, and definitely not any country with nuclear weapons. 661
CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Canstockphoto - is it worth it?« on: March 12, 2016, 14:57 »
I have always submitted there because it is easy. CS and DT usually have the highest variance in sales per month, and CS has been quite poor the past few months, with a lot of 25-35-cent subs rather than regular DLs. Lately regular DLs have been better, but I just checked out prices versus returns and am not sure I will continue - they seem to be paying the lowest commission rates in the industry.
Size Price Commission Percent Small 3.00 0.50 16.7 Medium 6.00 0.75 12.5 Large 7.00 1.00 14.3 X-Large 8.00 1.25 15.6 XX-Large TIFF 12.00 2.50 20.8 These are based on actual sales during the past month and the posted prices on their site. With the commission for a Medium at only 12.5% they are really not treating contributors well - worse than iStock. Are they worth it? At those rates maybe not. (If I've made any errors in those calculations please let me know) 662

I hate keywording, but do learn a lot during the process. I use Wikipedia a lot to get information about places and species.
So far nobody has mentioned the MSG keywording tool Leaf made (http://microstockgroup.com/tools/keyword.php). It's free, fast and works great. 664
Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia - Keyword Ordering on Upload« on: March 05, 2016, 10:17 »
I always put the few most important keywords at the front just to make it easier for uploading to FT and Alamy. No idea how important it is for sales but it is only a small nuisance so I do it just in case.

That's too bad. I started with them during their "Dash to cash" program - it was nice to get paid just for uploads. They had about the highest RPDL of any major stock site but hadn't had many sales the past three years or so. I'm glad to know they will pay out final balances - I have been stuck at around $75 the past couple of months. Wonder how many more we will lose during 2016?

Some good news from a stock site - very nice!
I am on pace to have a BME on FT this month. I haven't submitted anything in more than a year so it is due entirely to better sales rather than portfolio growth - they are definitely doing something right. With growth at FT and Canva, and SS hanging in there, it almost makes me want to start uploading again. Thanks for the info, Mat. 669

General Photography Discussion / Re: 10mm on crop sensor vs 16mm on full frame« on: February 16, 2016, 22:54 »
Don't know whether it will affect distortion but 10 mm on a 1.6-crop-factor camera is the same as 16 mm full frame. I use the 10-22 all the time and I think the distortion you are talking about is inherent to any wide-angle lens unless you go for tilt shift. I assume you've tried correcting it in PS - that usually makes it tolerable. I think you will see the same thing at 16 mm full frame but don't have one to make a direct comparison.

General Stock Discussion / Re: RM on Alamy« on: February 16, 2016, 16:53 »Last I heard was that Alamy now sells much more RF than RM. Taking them from Micro RF and into Alamy RF should be quite OK. Yes, what Stan said. If they are regular RF on the micros you also can put them RF on Alamy no problem. Almost all of my Alamy sales last were were of images that also were RF on the micros. If they were ever sold RF whether regular or editorial then I don't think you can market them RM - you lost that opportunity by selling them RF in the first place. Sales on Alamy though are very slow so you might make more on the micros. The only way to know with your images is to do a test - put half on Alamy and the rest on the micros and see which makes you more money after a year. Just be sure any you list as RM are different from any RF images. Good luck! 673

Shutterstock.com / Re: The Importance of Correct Keywords.« on: February 16, 2016, 08:04 »
I really hate the spammers and wish something could be done but the problem is rampant. I assume their thinking is to have their images/clips show up in as many searches as possible hoping that they will get some downloads even though their work is not relevant to the search, but that really makes it difficult for buyers. For editorial the agencies should take a very strict approach but for RF nothing will happen unless agencies decide it is important. A cv to me is like communism - nice idea in theory but in practice it just doesn't work, as shown thoroughly by the almost complete failure of the iS cv. DT used to have a system where buyers could report inappropriate keywords but that never worked very well either - I was reported once for the keyword "Australia" on an image of a fish taken at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Easily dealt with obviously but for the agencies a system that could take a lot of time for little benefit. Giving reviewers authority to reject for keywords - which I think they have already at SS and probably other agencies - also may be a problem if they are not aware of all possible descriptors or with the blue whale example given previously. Something will only happen if buyers complain vociferously and it doesn't look like that will be anytime soon. Caveat emptor!

That is exactly right - it's not going to make any difference on your taxes anyway, and the IRS allows you to round up or down. Take a deep breath and let that one go. |
