whatever the stats from click or sharp.. the main thing is that IS isn't going to increase anyone, just reducing...

it isnt going to be to good to anyone, just to IS, end of story

p.s: INCOME LOST could be entitled MORE INCOME TO IS! :P

I don't know how much IS does a year.. but they will surely get close to what they want (just close because they want the 100%)

6702
it is possible to change my vote?

6703
OK let's try to get 23 more votes for the poll. 200 iStock member votes would help getting a clearer image of what's happening.

Please email this to IS contributors, tweet about it or put it on your Facebook wall or myspace page.

Just 23 more votes!

I have placed it on FB and twitter :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Bulk upload of portfolio
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:35 »
Even at sites without upload limits I noticed increased rejection levels if I upload way too many files at a time, not necessarily similar.

I suppose it's not an official policy but just the reviewers getting bored. So you'd better ask them.

True, I am feeling the same.. FT was always hard but the last days wow..! One by one will help :)

I don't know about cutting my nose ...
One thing for sure - accepting ANY offer, no matter how low, how insulting, it's not doing any good to my nose, and, most importantly, my future.
I have a hard time believing that IStock can't survive unless they cut my commission to 15%.
The same holds true for microstock contributors.
I have a hard time believing some microstock contributors really can't afford to withdraw ports at IS. They can. In most cases there's no real danger. Some can.
It's not so much about bills, food on the table and growing families.
It's about personality, nose if you will, and more, but I'll leave it at that.
To each its own.

In my case, I'm still in shock and I need a few more days to think this over.
I'm faced with a task that right now seems impossible to me. I can't bring myself to upload to a site that offers 15% commission. It's so low, it's unreal. IStock of all places!

Have a look at those targets. They're funny. Contributors who diversified by producing more than one media type - in my case vectors and photos - are being hit twice as hard.
To diversify your port is not a good thing anymore. At least at IStock it isn't.

Well, by myself I don't matter.
Unfortuntately we seem to be incapable of organizing ourselves  - there's no group or union that I can join or try to help.
IStock will go ahead, targets will be yearly adjusted and no independent contributor will ever make it to 20%. That's for sure.

I am just wondering where they are going to spend the new 5% cut :P

Dont send to DT or FT they will both do the same as IS.  Send to Alamy , better % and a company that so far won't screw you..

Alamy is not a realistic choice for most buyers looking for microstock images at microstock prices.

Brandon - I am not deeply offended.  Just think it's better if the originator of a poll lets people respond openly without posting personal judgments about them based on their choices.  Obviously you disagree.  It's your poll so you can run the thread how you like.

BTW, if anyone knows of a successful microstock agency that hasn't lowered rates, or changed terms, or sells mainly subs, but still has a vast and appealing collection good enough to compete with IS for buyers, I will be happy to change my vote and direct buyers there :)

I'm hopeful that my images aren't microstock then, the next three months will be devoted to building a 1000 image plus library on Alamy.  I hope it works but I can't send anymore travel photos to IS knowing that they are not there to support me in the long run.  I feel like I can add value to IS by putting images from remote and very under represented places on the site but the changes there have caused me to reevaluate my position.

As I heard from a lot of Alamy contibutors sales there take time to happen, year or so but then a few nice ones might bring some value!

« on: September 11, 2010, 19:23 »
I also think if we accept things as they are, we are doomed. All big agencies will do the same.

you are 100% right! but the truth is that in a few days, weeks things will be "forgotten" and everyone will start again the upload.. the real problem is the other agencies looking on what contributors are doing.. raises will never happen in microstock!.. or when we get there they will take it from us..

I really hope that other agencies don't follow IS policy

Mr. Stock eheh I have created a petition yesterday I guess, 11 signatures :P

http://www.petitiononline.com/istock11/petition.html

I guess if it was created by Yuri, Andres, Monkeybusiness it would have 111 at minimium!

Hey I saw that but honestly, it doesn't really say anything or threaten to do anything, it has no teeth. We need an ultimatum. We certainly should wait a while and see if all the complaining does any good but eventually if it doesn't, we need to be willing to take action or we'll just get walked on the next time around as well.

do it, I will support it :)

poll should have a don't know!! :P

I'm getting images inspected, but lots more than usual rejections.  Haven't uploaded anything new since the big announcement and don't plan to for the time being.

make it 2

6713
I don't think it's a question of how much they are making, but where are they spending it all if they need more?

They don't need! 10M $ houses :P

Flooboard
- now WB isn't correct, too many blues no?
- focus is acceptable!
- again crop the top left and right corner :)

Woman holding phone
- lighting is really poor
- do you think a buyer wants this picture? to what?.. see other photos at stock agencies regarding this subject..!
- too many distractions on the background!

Thai Sausages
- I like it but a lot of distractions like the blue basket at the right

Lighter
- trademark on the green shirt and lighter!
- the person on the left also a distraction!
- focus isn't well

Cemetary
- where . did you focus??? at the center??? bad focus
- could be a nice photo if it is well focus and no visible names.. or it could be Editorial!

My advice is to shoot less complex shoots... try some regular shoots like fruits, background.. always remember that a shot should have a clean space for copyspace!.. why dont you look into IS photos and other agencies..?

don't give up but I guess you have a lot of work, research and getting to know what stock really is..! (I am very new at stock, year and half but I can tell that you need clean good shoots to bring some bucks..)

I'm in favour of the idea that's been canvassed in other threads to create a new agency that's owned by a collective of contributors, provided that its got broad support and the necessary start-up capital.

The problem with all existing agencies that are privately operated is that they have to
1. make profit for the owners
2.  pay for marketing and overheads
3. pay contributors for content

The priority list seems to be in that order too. If we had an agency that was broadly contributor owned which had attitude that the profit for owners part came through pay for images, we wouldn't have that problem.

How much?? How much is the start-up? How much is the advertising?

I guess it isn't that much once there are agencies like Graphicleftovers owned by a 40's and a 20's person, maybe have a lot of money don't know.. it is a very interesting idea, I guess that money for creating this agency should be equal between investors or I guess will bring a lot of problems..

'Back in 2004 ... '
this guy can't stop himself.
There he goes again telling us his life story. While Rome is burning.
I feel like sending him a romance novel, red roses, a box of chocolate.

Well, this is it.
15% commission for me, 85% for Getty.
It seems incredible, unreal.
Is this legal?

20% was low enough... but as I read contributors are uploading... LOL can't wait a week or two??.. I have never missed a week so I will miss a few now!

Adobe Stock / Re: Why I love Fotolia!
« on: September 10, 2010, 20:59 »
I think you really need to ask yourself why it is there is nobody - and I mean nobody - who is a full-time stock photographer and exclusive at Fotolia. You can be fond of all the things you've mentioned, Matt, but when it comes down to the bottom line you are selling yourself short. More short than you think is possible.

does this mean you get more on IS exclusivity??

6718
eheheh made have a deal with them (guess not but...)

he need to have a average of 10 credits sales and 140k sales per year..

Finally got an email form them.
Quote
Please note that IF you are a resident of Brazil, which has no income tax treaty with the United States, we will be required to deduct a 30% withholding tax from your Dreamstime earnings coming from US buyers.

Any idea of the % of the sales at DT that come from US?  In FT it is a minority, so it didn't affect me much.

Just like in SS (10% on my stats).. I am wondering the same but I guess mostly is from Europe and Asia! (I hope)

Here a quick poll status overview (considering 108 votes). I know that this is not very representative but I have to work with what I got. So far we have poll results from:

80 non exclusive contributors which split into:

32.5%   dropping down to 15%
31.25% dropping down to 16%
27.5%   dropping down to 17%
6.25%   dropping down to 18%
1.25%   dropping down to 19%
1.25%   maintaining 20%

These results mean that 98.75% of the non exclusives will suffer a commission decrease.
The number speaks for itself and I don't think I need to show any other calculations.
Anything below 20% commission is simply "unsustainable".

28 exclusive contributors which split into:

32.1%   dropping down to 25%
14.3%   dropping down to 30%
7.1%     dropping down to 35%
21.4%   maintaining 40%

10.7%   maintaining 25%
14.3%   maintaining 30%
0%   maintaining 35%

This shows that 54% of exclusives are dropping into a lower commission bracket while 46% of exclusives maintain their commission percentage.

Of course this poll does not include any information about exclusives rising into a higher commission bracket with the new system.

I would love to hear from the exclusives who will move into a higher commission bracket to get  more objective results.

Please keep voting. I'm more than happy to keep these numbers updated.

nice job, hope that more contributors VOTE :P

General Stock Discussion / Re: Microstock is DEAD ?
« on: September 09, 2010, 18:14 »
The end of microstock ?

You guys must admit i was right in any of my prophecies !

Now feel free to move your portfolios on SS, FT, and DT, wait a few months and see them screwing
you up even more after january with the excuse of bad economy downturn and yadda yadda... (FT did it already
in the past).

What options do you have after all ?
Macrostock ? Forget it, it's in deep sh-it exactly because of you microstockers accepting getting paid a pittance.

You created a monster, and now you pay the consequences on your skin.
There's justice in this world after all.

If the farewell post isn't final ;) what prophecies specifically are you right about. Honest, I mean there have been many general comments, I'm looking for some specifics.

I hate to disagree but your comment about 20% on IS isn't quite correct. Unless you meant only exclusives which are not the majority of contributors. Something like 25% last I checked, as high as 40%. But the other half of the people, non-exclusive, have just been moved down to 15% which stinks even more.

Can't argue that 25c from SS or ThinkStock isn't a pittance. Volume subs and from me they get images that are worth what they pay. Fair enough in my view.

Options? I have many, but I'm sure not posting them here for the smarter, better, harder working photographers and illustrators to jump on! I'm done giving away leads to the competition or helping people find outlets that pay more. It's no secret and most everyone has already seen the possibilities, they just don't want to face the change from the comfort of shotgun volume sales on Micro.

Oh yes, the answer? No microstock is not dead. The buyers have a nice source for materials, the few top agencies have a good selection and millions of inexpensive images that we provided them. Enough to last of years and years, plus the people who will still be uploading for "peanuts". Not dead for photographers or artists who can produce enough volume and are willing to take pennies for their work. It's just a storm going through right now and I'd predict that in a couple of months, when it blows over and everything settles down, it will be back to normal.

Then there will be other storms as the market adjusts and compensates for changes.

As far as unsustainable payments as IS claims and that payments will go up in 2012, I guess it's all about wait and see. Someone else calculated that 2% of the contributors (the exclusives mostly) account for 40% of the IS sales. The rich get richer and the rest will get their 15%. :(

What predictions and prophecies? Can you be specific?

half of FT royalties!

6723
it is  fun!.. the only sale I had on CutCaster was in August last year, now had my second minutes ago...

Total: $1.17
Total Payout: $0.47

1250019030     2009-08-11 FIRST
1284073446     2010-09-09 SECOND

(does this mean 34M sales??)

TOTAL $1.54

eheheh thanks John!!!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: September 09, 2010, 17:50 »
I have had decent sales today at a couple of sites that are usually dead in the water - Canstock and Crestock.  And my Fotolia sales are up by about 50% over what they usually are on a weekday.

It's probably way too soon to see a noticeable difference from customers moving, but it did seem unusual.  Anyone else experiencing the same?

I just see a very good performance at 123RF

6725
Actually, I agree with some of the changes they propose. It's a good way for new talented peoples to get better earning faster. And I also think it's faire that the more you bring money, the higher your commission should be.

BUT! I can't agree with a commission lower than 20%. Even 20% was very low and I can't believe they want to go lower than that. IMO, they should have kept the independant at a fixed 20%. From a PR perspective, there would be a LOT less screaming.

As for the credit levels, the numbers are not realistic. They should tone that down to more fair levels. For someone to generate 2 million dollars in revenue to get to the highest level is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure they will readjust that to try to make peace with the exclusives but unfortunately, I think the damage is done. With the news expanding everywhere, iStock's reputation is going down the drain. That's sad! I miss Bruce!

You make good points Eric.  I think the points you enumerated - going below 20% for non-exclusives, and making the credit levels so unattainable - that are causing the most stir.  If they had been more reasonable on those two issues they could probably have gotten the changes in the way royalties are calculated past the majority of contributors.

I think all but the very top exclusive credit levels aren't out of reach at all - I'll be maintaining my 40% commission without even breaking a sweat. The top exclusive credit level and non-exclusive credit levels need a rethink, though - cutting these in half would go a long way. It should be very interesting to see how this all plays out ...

it SHOULD just be forbidden to pay less than 20%.. it is already low enough no???..

instead of 1.4M credits should be 140K! and 25%!
