Yes, I didn't think about that, but you could probably read the appropriate table in the database and work out the numbering plan. I think you would still have to processed all the images to get the different sizes though? It would have been quite complex...

open the expert settings at the bottom to specify chunk size

Ahh - I see those now!

I still think I need a way to incrementally backup my image files - creating that one of backup of just the images would be fine, but when I add some more, my only choice is to do the complete backup again. I need to let this first manual backup complete before I can do anything though!

The actual database backup takes a minute or two at most, and that is where all the changes occur. Other changes to the site only happen when you do something - like add new images, or add a plugin etc.

So my understanding is that for us, nothing is needed to freeze the site

I'm running my 10GB site now - it is taking a long time as you would expect! I didn't see the chunk size setting so I will see what happens!

Once this has run, I'm going to change my approach and backup the images semi manually to Google Drive as they don't change often (especially the old ones) and then use Updraft on the rest of the site. I think that will make it much faster and easier.

I'll write out some fuller guidelines on how to work this with Google Drive once I have worked it out!

Vanilla is a fruit as well, isn't it - at least a plant?

Good idea - I can do one big backup now of the images in the RF folder and then incrementally back them up when I have had a major upload of images. That would make my daily backups of the rest of the site much more simple.

Well, $35 is actually more than twice the price of Nicolesy's book on food photography from Amazon (the Kindle version is less than $10);

Good point - I'll check that out as well now that my interest is pique'd! It is always the same with magazines though - they feed you new stuff on a monthly basis and we don't notice the $5 going out each month.

One thing I discovered talking to support of UpdraftPlus is that currently it is a full backup every time you run it - not incremental. They are working on an incremental solution right now. Hence, we need to be careful how often we run the full backup - database is fine as that is small, but there isn't really a need to run a full backup of all the images every night.

Great - hope you enjoy them. I read the first batch of 7 over two evenings - relaxing and informative at the same time. I'm just part way through issue 8.

Hi JS

I bought the add ins (the full package!!) and installed nicely. When you selected folders, did you select the choice "Wordpress Core" and excluded WP-admin and WP-includes?

I think that choosing that option would pick up all the image folders.

steve

Sure - you do. And I comment on that in my review. Depends if you think some inspiration and useful knowledge and background is worth it. My comment was that I thought it was a bit overpriced, but I still enjoyed it and bought the most recent issue. Out of my monthly earnings, it is a small amount to pay, in my view.

Hi Redneck

You are right - the basic free installation of UpdraftPlus does not copy the main folders that include our images (which is 10G on my site). You need to buy some add-ins to cover the remaining folders as jsnover explained.

The Google drive storage of 100G should be fine though.

I came across a site written by Taylor Mathis, a professional food photographer, where he produces a monthly magazine focused on a new aspect of taking great pictures of food each month. He is now on issue 8, and his approach is very straightforward and also focused on making use of simple inexpensive approaches - a white bed sheet hung in the garage door opening is how he starts. That said, his images are really great.

I've enjoyed each issue so far - it is always good to get some new inspiration! I've reviewed the site and the magazines over on my blog if you are interested (and, yes, I did sign up as an affiliate of his, but I never recommend anything I don't purchase and use for myself!)

I didn't use Google cloud storage (assuming that is a separate offering), just the google drive storage option that you probably already have if you use Gmail. I then extended that to 100G for $4.99 a month.

I need to get that extra plugin next to back up all the files as you have done.

Although to add to my answer, I think I need to do more. So far, it will backup everything in my wp-content folder. I don't think my images are there - there are other things in the root folder that I think I need.

There is an add-in files extra that I need to investigate!

No, I don't think that is right. I'm setting it to back up my entire site daily, and keep one additional version, and then separately to backup the database on a different schedule - perhaps twice a day.

I've just gone through the setup to Google Drive - it is OK if you closely follow the instructions AND open the instructions and the API to Google Drive in separate tabs (right click to do that)

I've used Updraft Plus on a different site and it seems to work very well. It ties in with a Google Drive automatically. I just checked my own Google drive and I get 15G for free, and 100GB is $4.99 a month.

I'm going to set that up now and see how it goes!

I thought there were two criteria in the polls - the first was that more than 50 people had to report results against an agency for it to appear in the lists with earnings ratings. Then the amount of the rating just depends on what you fill in as the earnings that month. So, if 50 of us reported earning $5, we would appear down at the bottom in the low earnings.

So all it takes is for us to report, even if it is zero

Steve

I'm sure this works, but why not use one of the WP plugins that does exactly this.

One one of my sites I use Updraft Plus that backs up to a Google drive automatically every day, and on the other I use Wordpress Database backup that emails me a copy of the database once a week.

General Stock Discussion / Re: August Sales
« on: September 01, 2013, 09:59 »
My August Sales were nothing special. Shutterstock was going to have a really slow month, but I managed two Single sale for over $100 each and just one ED, which brought it back into reasonable levels. Overall I failed to hit the $2000 bar that I like to think of as my target, ending up with around $1960 or so. No sign of earnings yet on the SignElements site, so I have guessed at that.
Top line graph is below, with more details, as usual, on my blog.

Yes, great price for a dramatic image!! It knocks my $3 for a 1000 px image way over the boundary...

Steve

I've also been working on the beta version - it is great for me - simple, straightforward and fast. I used to use FileZilla, and open up each site in parallel and send my images that way. Now I just open the program, add the files through one click, press upload and leave it. I've got a fast internet connection so I easily get 5Mbit/s and my files just zip their way to the agencies.

Great job Igor!

I noticed, while perusing my first sale, that  the email that is sent to the buyer after they make a purchase is sent to the "wrong" email address.

Someone created an account with their work email address. They then chose to buy a file, and used Paypal to do so. However, they used their personal paypal email address (again, perhaps not unusual).

The email announcing the purchase and the download link was then sent to the personal paypal email, not the one they were registered under. Shouldn't we have maintained consistency and used their registered one - I know there are arguments about needing registration, but while we have it, we should maintain the use of that account.

Is this just a setup error on my site, or is this the design?

Steve

699
Well, I thought this day would never come - someone registered and then immediately bought one of my photos of St Thomas. Only a smallish one at $3, but hey - its a start.

I did email the person to ask if everything went smoothly, but no response. I'm guessing/hoping that it did.

I've been a bit slow on adding new images recently, but a $3 sale is just what I needed to restart the process.... Wait - that is paying me about 10c an hour...

Seriously, I'm in this for the long haul and so will carry on!

General Stock Discussion / Re: July Earnings
« on: August 18, 2013, 20:21 »
Very late report from me this month. Now that the PP earnings are in, I was finally motivated to update my graphs and publish the post on my blog.
http://www.backyardsilver.com/2013/08/earnings-in-july-2013-for-stock-photography/

Overall earnings were again over $2000, ending up at $2149 helped by startling earnings of $114 from Zoonar! I've kept uploading to that site as it is pretty easy to do, and last month I got $41 and this month $114 - things are looking up from their partners!!

Here is a different graph for you - percentage of earnings at each site:
