Figure out what drives the search engines at each agent, it's not that hard.
It's great that you found out the well-kept secrets of the best match at iStock. Without any doubt, your large and successful portfolio on iStock was a great help in finding that grale.  ::)  8)
I think I'll turn my noise reduction engine on again here, and reduce this thread from 3 to 1.5 pages without loss of signal. ;)

Would love to hear more about how you managed to get all your 59 files on DT placed advantageously enough to pull in the 72 sales you have had since you started in April 2010.  Perhaps yours is just the fresh perspective and insight we "old timers" have been waiting for to show us the way.
;D- I didn't say it this time.  :P

However, there's a big difference between buyers organizing their own lightboxes and you guys creating lightboxes/galleries for the buyers.
Correct, I think we're talking about a different type of lightboxes. The ones that buyers make for themselves are actually glorified bookmarks. I use them on my buyer's account in DT to pass to the designers (that use the same account). Lightboxes on DT are not even public (collections are, just like lightboxes on IS). When the (Indian) designers log in they check my lightbox and download out of it what matches best the page layout or dominant colors.

Contributor-made lightboxes or collections are totally different. They are very useful for a niche subject that would take too much time for a buyer to explore himself.

Off Topic / Re: Will Yellowstone erupt any time soon?
« on: August 25, 2010, 05:00 »
PRO:
1 - a great cure for global warming
2 - fantastic sunsets by the ashes in the atmosphere
3 - 95% of all microstock photographers are killed - more room for you, more room for me
4 - great photo-op with a good tele - try video too
5 - no plane hijackings since no flights any more - use abandoned planes as props
6 - yellowstone park pictures become priceless on stock

CONTRA:
1 - 95% of all microstock buyers are killed - less sales for you, less sales for me
2 - more sensor dust when changing lenses
3 - "magma chamber explosion" over-abundant category on stock
4 - model girls with headset difficult to find

Don't worry, be happy  ;D

So why not you offer lisafx the assistance ?
Ahem, that was already done. ;-) But thanks!
And while I got your attention.
I have question for you on Firefox. How do you reduce the memory intensiveness impact on browser? I don't like IE because it is prone to virus. Or is that pure rumor?  What browser do you use? If firefox is so bad why is it the most popular of browser?
FF, but I now minimize my # of open tabs so the resident scripts are minimal. FF itself is not that heavy, but of course heavier than IE that co-uses the renderer in the (resident) explorer. If you have little memory, it's better to restart your PC and not open FF when you want to do Photoshop. DPP is a memory beast too.

From careful observation and rememberance of several comments existing here there is one call FD who sound like having qualification you seek. At least from various comments made by the person. Unless it is all person named FD know is limited but my idea is this person sound with knowledge to design site so.
Come on TanSen, flattery will bring you nowhere.  :P

I presume the uploader will have to link the file to each of the agencies it is on according to its file number there, so that buyers could click through to make a purchase (and activate a referral, if possible).

I use one of the unused IPTC fields to put in the link to the stock sales site and my software does the rest. I'm just playing with my port  now on a standalone site to see how fast I can get into Google Images. Example (currently linked to 3DS but it can be whatever).

684
I had suggested something similar several years ago, but nobody seemed interested/willing to embark on such a project.
It came up 2 or 3 times. Perhaps the need wasn't there then.

685
I'm interested too. But I'm, afraid my photos would only degrade the collection
You can write the score.  ;)

Moan. Where's your port by the way? This is not a referral collection site but a photography site. Never mind.

Can we see your illustration and the sketches or screen shots you sent IS for proof? Can we see your portfolio at other sites? If not, I assume you're just lying your way out. Sorry.

I would love to hear from members of Veer and/or Depositphotos if the sales are better than I had thought...
FYI: I had a sale every day the past week on DP, and today two. Considering the strenght and the volume of your port, and the ratios on DT, you can expect x20 there.

Off Topic / Re: Twitter - how the heck is it supposed to work?
« on: August 23, 2010, 18:04 »
I have many photography colleagues at Facebook, when I post something there it is they, not clients, who see this. And yes, I find it annoying those "I sold N images at DT today", therefore I don't use such tools - actually I don't want to promote anything from micros.
Well, basically it's a social tool then. Nothing wrong with that.

See, this is one of the problems. Some people are working in the same industry and others may be your clients.
There might be a small overlap, but in general, it's two different worlds. When I have to buy my 3 daily shots, I never look at Twitter, FB or whatever. I just do the search on site (DT) and I don't care who made the shot. There is no time for that since I have a 1hr deadline for daily media.
You can't make both happy. Do I have to set up several accounts with Twitter then?
Never thought of that, but again, what's the use of targeting other photographers, that will (a) never buy your stuff and (b) get an early preview of your newest shots so they can copy them faster. You can use Twitter that way though, follow your (naive) competitors and get an early preview of what they are up to.  :P

Aaaa... I already said too much.  ;D

Thanks for the info!
Actually I just restarted till I found out by the task manager I can just kill the hungry beast.  ;) (kill process tree and not just process).

I only really use DPP to convert raw files to tiffs, adjusting exposure slightly when required.  I will have to look at it in more depth one day.
If you do that, you should certainly include the CA in your workflow. It's superb and it's just 15 sec more. I didn't do video yet on my 5DII, but I think I saw some video things when installing the 5DII software. Not sure. I had glitches in my recorded video but Richard (RT) told me it had to do with the type of my CSF card.

FD ... I don't have photoshop, only photoshop elements.  I'm REALLY interested in what you said about HDR.  Does it do or simulate doing any tone mapping?  I'm cheap and trying to avoid replacing my HDR software that got lost in the computer transfer.

1 - It doesn't matter, PE or PS. You will have to export the images in TIF from DPP anyways (write to disk), so whatever can read TIF is fine.

2 - It's not really HDR but you can exploit the fact that a RAW (depending on cam) has more dynamic range as a JPG. You can export TIF-d with all the shadows well structured (highlights are blown out, histogram clipped at the right) and a TIF-l (all highlights recovered, shadow a dark patch, histogram clipped at the left).
Since DPP doesn't have layers, you'll have to selectively erase in PS. I don't know if it would work in a HDR program but you could try.

3 - Losing registered software is never a problem. You can send them an email with your info and they will replace it.
FD:  would it be feasible to do all my CR2 editing in DPP and saving to JPG for upload?  IE: not use PSE at all?  Would that reduce my artifacts rejections?

1 - You could do that if your image is OK in DPP, but personally I love to tweak always in layers (hence PS), and then you're better off in TIF. JPG is a lossy format and it should always be the last step before uploading, with no way back. Don't reopen it or you get generation loss. TIF is lossless and keep that as your master copy. You can reopen/save it an endless number of times (for retweaking) without loss. (see my compendium under lossy and TIF).

2 - I don't see how skipping a step can reduce artifacts, but probably you mean starting from RAW. Well RAW has more info (dynamic range) than JPG, so if you stretch RAW out in under- or overexposed shots, you will get less artifacts than if you do the same in the reduced JPG. Of course, RAW isn't a miracle - but it's a way to save borderline shots. Most of the time you will get pixelation or artifacts when you stretch the luminance range of an under- or overexposed shot, or one with too little contrast (the histogram flocking together in the middle). If you stretch that in PS, you will "cook" new info that wasn't there and that's perceived as pixelation.
Not only by stretching luminance you'll get it, but also by too much saturation, USM mask, and especially oversharpening.
Thanks for the info and any other advice anyone may care to offer/discuss.  Maybe we can all get more use out of DPP.   :P

Well you have it there, just try it out and play with it. I was surprised BaldricksTrousers used it too. Of course some people trust Lightroom but last year I saw a group of professional assignment photographers work with it and it's not my cup of tea for stock.
PS:  FD, did you check with Adobe for a CR2 plugin?  I found one for my PSE8 and it was a fairly simple install.

Any link?

I think the earlier post was from FD-regular (amateur, etc).  Would someone care to offer more info on this software, PLEASE?
Yap it comes with the cam (in my case 5DII) and the main use is treating RAW. As Photoshop never gives backwards updates on RAW formats, they force you to always buy the next version. I'm happy with CS2 but it doesn't handle CR2 files. DPP does just that. I use it for adjusting the WB, the CA and a little bit of sharpening (1) as it is better from RAW. I also use it to adjust the exposure since the RAW has a larger dynamic range than a 16-bit TIF and certainly an 8-bit JPG. You need to export this to 16 bit TIF and open it in PS. Don't save the edited RAW!

Especially when you have a Canon lens, the CA (fringe) reduction in DPP is superb and automatic since the program contains the lens profile. Stay away from all the sliders in that case.

Especially in your landscapes, you will love the high dynamic range and export 2 TIFS, one with emphasis on the shadows, one with emphasis on the highlights. Import both in PS, in 2 layers, and selectively erase at wish to obtain some pseudo-HDR.
PS:  doesn't this also have some video capability?
No DPP is only for still raws.

Will do. Makes sense and I hope I'll also get lots of followers that I can spam my stuff to  :P
Don't do that. I just unfollowed hlenerer because he uses that idiot Shutterstock Twitter plugin. Hi, I just sold 4 images today on SS, Hi, I just got 5 new images approved on SS... grrrrrrr. Every one-two weeks a tweet about something important is enough. No need to promote your stuff with other contributors since they aren't your market.

The last part of the discussion is too technical for me. I don't understand what you mean. Can you please explain me in very simple English what this memory leak exactly is and what the consequences are when surfing the web? Do you have a link about the subject, so I can read more about it?

This seems a very good explanation in general:

Generally, when you minimize a window the memory usage goes way down because that application isnt active. Unfortunately, Firefox by default doesnt adhere to this behavior.

Look who's eating most memory and it's even on just an hour or two.

@FD... this is way off subject but that leak is interesting.  Is it common?  I seem to be having a Memory Leak problem but haven't been able to isolate it.
Yes it's common. FF is known for that and I came accross joke sites on the net about it. It can go till 1Gbyte in RAM, depending on the number of tabs you have open and the scripts on there. On a PC with just 2GByte ram (like mine), it can slow things terribly down. Beware: it's not enough to close FF in the normal way since it will stay resident. You'll have to invoke the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and kill the FF process tree manually.

I'm a bit confused what you mean? I did your search and
http://yaymicro.com/search.action?search.search=business+success+cheering&search.first=true&x=0&y=0&search.searchLanguage=English
gave 3489 search result. Would be interested in knowing how you came about getting 4 images in your result? Could you maybe post the link from the browser, and I will have a look at why you don't get more results.

Well I retried it, and you are right now. I can't imagine what happened the first time since I left the FF tab open. Well to be complete, I had to kill FF in between by the task manager since it was leaking memory all over.

So can it be it was a session cookie renewed? Or did the search go from AND to OR? It seems to me like that since on the first page, it's all Yuri: business portraits but none is cheering. I made a screenshot for you:
(note by the way the small blue bullets from picscout: when I click on it, I'm brought to the sales page of the same image on Dreamstime).

Update: I checked the advanced options and there is nothing to change from any to all words. Buyers expect that, plus the default on AND.
Now, and this is revealing: when I just search on "cheering", I only get 131 images. So the search must have turned mysteriously from AND to OR, and that's why I got only 3 images the first time.

Yaymicro / Re: Closed Forum
« on: August 23, 2010, 07:48 »
I don't get why anybody should close a forum for spambots (if that's the real reason, of course). There are some good captchas around and if forum access would be limited to contributors with at least 5 images or buyers with at least 1 purchase, there would be no spambots at all. Surrendering to an independent forum where YAY has no control over (and where YAYosceptics can post too) might not be a very good business decision.
