General Stock Discussion / Vivozoom
« on: September 10, 2008, 17:56 »
I just received a promo offer from Vivozoom.
What's the word on these guys and their 'fresh approach'?

677
Before turning to microstock I used mine a lot for self-promotion. I use it now for the vanity email address and as a handy spot for people to download stuff they bought from me directly. It also gives me more credibility on the few occasions I give someone a business card.

I'm not noticing anything different. But then again your numbers are significantly higher than mine. I've always been in the $0.80-$1.00 range, with only two months (Apr and Aug 08) over $1.00.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Gradual Slowdown?
« on: September 06, 2008, 03:16 »
For those of us that have day jobs and are not professional photographers, what are they?
Isn't it obvious?
Personal: weddings, families, senior high school students, babies, ...
Commercial: fashion, accessories, real estate, newspapers, magazines, ...

It's up to you, really. A main difference between the traditional and stock markets is the approach - in stock we shoot speculatively: there is no guaranteed/pre-arranged payment. The traditional world revolves around contacts and contracts: who you know plays the most significant role.

FWIW, I've done the first two things - stock photography is by far the most stress-free and rewarding.

General Stock Discussion / Re: amateurs running microstock?
« on: September 05, 2008, 23:38 »
He is pointing to how badly they run microstock industry

1. instead of finding new clients they just compete with each other
2. prices are too low and that makes images look cheap and sales are declining
3. all of this is happening since amateurs are running the business of microstock sites.

 am I close, lobby ?
I think you are close enough to what he was trying to say.
He is, unfortunately (for himself), wrong on all counts.

And wow, pocket wizard sure has a monopoly.  They do work great so no complaints, but surprising that no one else has stepped in to try and compete. Maybe they have a patent on radio control remote controls for DSLR cameras.
PW have many competitors, but none that have their reliability and range. That's why they can charge so much.

I'll give credit where credit is due.  Back to back days with credit sales, and now I have a cool $6 off of 2 sales.  Well done SV.  Now let's make some money together!   8)
Wow, you're that excited over 2 sales and $6 ... I want to be around you when you get an EL!

Heads up: By uploading images via Google Chrome you may be inadvertently giving your images away. The EULA explicitly states the following:

11. Content license from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this license includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.

11.3 You understand that Google, in performing the required technical steps to provide the Services to our users, may (a) transmit or distribute your Content over various public networks and in various media; and (b) make such changes to your Content as are necessary to conform and adapt that Content to the technical requirements of connecting networks, devices, services or media. You agree that this license shall permit Google to take these actions.

11.4 You confirm and warrant to Google that you have all the rights, power and authority necessary to grant the above license.

On the surface, this seems to me a bit underhanded of them.

not a lot of money? depends on how you look at. 8$ per hour times 8 hours = 64$ a day. 64$ times 23 days a month = 1472$ a month. it is equivalent to 956 EUR which is waaaaaay over average monthly salary in my country. furthermore 900 EUR a month is considered a very very good salary.
On the flip side, $1472 per month just begins to cover my expenses. You'd be living below the poverty line if you made only that much here (Vancouver, Canada).

which way do you think they are scewing the results.  Too many high or too many low votes?
Too many high votes.

I don't think OD sales are accounting for significant income, but the other poll shows that they increase income by 5% or more for 29% of the contributors. I think this poll paints a more accurate picture of what we can expect from this additional revenue stream.

It looks to me that OD sales aren't going to be that big a deal. Not for the time being, at least.

My DT speedometer isn't supposed to be showing, either.
Can you please fix it for me, leaf?

After looking at this poll, I suspect that the number of low-earners are skewing the results.

Let's see some real numbers, people!

Why does the poll have so many low-earning categories?
0-$100, $100-$500, and $500-$1000 should suffice.

Move that needle ... "I think I can I think I can I think I can ... "

I guess using "the force" doesn't work. Back to uploading  ;D

I'm sorry you feel that way, chumley.

Yes, there are some people here who tend to post negative things, but most aren't like that. I've improved my on-line life by ignoring those whose posts I find aggravating and inflammatory. I hope you consider staying here and doing the same. If not, then best of luck to you!

A word of advice: 4MP is Medium size on most sites. If you're going to downsize, you need to do your homework and do it so that you are at least uploading Large size images. You are severely handicapping your income with your current methodology.

I posted this a few weeks ago in response to a similar question regarding XL and XXL image sales on IS:

Here are the numbers from the last 500 sales of 5 of my XXL images (100 sales from each image):

  DLs  Avg. Price  Earnings
XS  151   $0.25   $37.75
S  100   $0.72   $72.00
M  141   $1.18   $166.38
L  70   $2.44   $170.80
XL  22   $3.47   $76.34
XXL  16   $4.98   $79.68

These graphs show things a bit more clearly:

Although XL and XXL sales are low in volume, they together make up 26% of the total earnings of these 5 images.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Average income per photo/month.
« on: August 18, 2008, 18:49 »
very nice portfolio chumley.

Yes, very nice.

For what it's worth, I think your images are extremely undersold. Given the subject material and quality of your imagery, I'm quite surprised at your very low numbers. You would do well to make it a priority to investigate why things aren't going significantly better for you in the microstock market.

On the plus side, you've caught the attention of achilles on DT. Sending him a complimentary email may help propel you to some well-deserved exposure.

I'd go with the 30D - exposure compensation is much easier (using the back dial) than on the Rebel.

General Stock Discussion / Re: BigStockPhoto, Worth my time?

Given what you shoot, unless you distinctly tailor your images to have really high commercial appeal, you'll need 1000+ images on BigStock before you can expect to earn $30 per month.

I think you've just found out how meaningless average/mean is when used without stating a standard deviation and/or confidence level/interval.

I was asking same question. Would it be nice to have explained somewhere on the page?

The price category names show up when you hover your mouse over them.

I prefer the old style earnings page, which you can still see by using this link.
