Selling Stock Direct / Re: help on License Agreement ???
« on: August 14, 2013, 13:18 »
Luis

I extended the basic Symbio one to cover non-RF uses, by making it a bit more "RM'y" and editorial. You can start from that.

This is becoming a popular area for development! As people here know, I've been working with StockUploader and that is now in great shape for release soon as V2.

Back to Go Stock - does it upload multiple files in parallel to make best use of available bandwidth to my ISP, and what are the plans for Veer?

I've just tested the second beta version - fantastic. Uploaded 38 images to 17 agencies in just 32 minutes. A total of 646 uploads at 5.25G.

Igor is 2/3 of the way there to his total of $158 for the license of one of the components of this. If you plan to use this to upload your files, please donate so that he can buy the component before the free trial expires!!

I don't think there is an answer to this to be honest - just how likely the agency is to be sued. Everything is designed (OK some things evolve, but we won't get into that debate...). So everything that is reasonably new has been designed by someone who owns the copyright to it. Some things are designed by famous people or companies that make the effort to enforce their copyright. Much other stuff is just made by the millions and the company/designer is simply interested in producing the product at low cost - they may stop someone copying the product, but a photo of the product is so far below their radar that they don't care, and if they thought about it, they may think it could help sales.

So, following that logic, everything that has been designed needs a release, but 90% of those items have been designed by people/companies who don't care. I think Shutterstock and the other agencies are trying their best to accept what has a low chance of dispute and reject the high risk items.

I had some 30 year old plastic snowmen rejected for property release, but they relented when I told them how old the items were...

The latest version of the Clean child theme from Amanda fixes this - or at least it does on my site (I don't use this plugin, but I think her latest code allows you to directly modify the code around this page.

StockUploader / Re: Stockuploader 4 PC V1.9 released
« on: July 27, 2013, 19:35 »
I mentioned earlier in a thread that I have worked a lot with Stockuploader as Igor successfully fixed an issue about FTP speed (at least on my PC) and I now heartily recommend it to those who miss the Lightburner. It works really well now, uploading directly to all your stock sites in one simple process. I outlined the process on my blog a couple of weeks back.

Igor has been working on making the program (which is free) work in a parallel fashion - ie as long as your upload ISP connection can carry the data, it will send multiple files in parallel to get the best out of the speed of each individual agency. However, the implementation of this needs the purchase of a commercial software routine, which he is struggling to afford.

If you find Stockuploader useful in your workflow, can you please consider donating a little of your earnings to Igor to help him fund this next update to the program. He doesn't want to stop this being a free program, so a little donation will help him achieve that.

His link for donations is: http://www.stockuploader.com/?page_id=45

Thanks

Here is a suggestion:

The way that it should work is that the customer should be able to enter in the DPI that they want, and the Symbiostock app would then apply this entry into the created file.  For example, if a customer buys a Large, but wants it at 200 DPI, they should be able to enter that into the system and have the system generate an image file with 200 DPI.

OK - I'm officially going crazy. What buyer will take a file they have paid good money for and send it straight from the file manager to a printer without looking at it in a photo editing program and maybe cropping it a little to fit with their design? As they are doing all that, they need to decide how big it needs to print. So, they adjust the dpi to fit their printer process and scale the file down to meet the physical size they want. What has Symbio got to do with any of that?

@steheap: I agree on your thoughts, but the thing is that it is prestated on the download page, that the Large image is in 300 dpi - while the three smaller is in 72 dpi - so even though it doesn't make any difference a costumer will expect to get an image in 300 dpi.

it doesn't really say that - it says that the file has a certain number of pixels at each file size. It also gives you an idea of how big you can print the latter two (in my case) at 300 dpi. The smaller ones are for web use and so it shows what size it will appear on a typical screen. Your original question was whether you needed to resize - the very clear answer from me is that it is "no", the dpi means nothing in terms of a digital file.

Steve

Neils

I see this statement about dpi so many times that I begin to think I am misunderstanding it!

However, I'll have a go at explaining. A digital file as a pixel count - ie 3000 x 1500. That is all. To print a digital file in a program like Photoshop (or any other), you need to set a dots per inch (DPI) setting that logically scales the image to a physical size. So 300 dpi means my file would print at 10 x 5 inches. Nothing changes in the file when you do that (assuming you don't enable resampling) and so you can change that dpi value all day long and it would not change the underlying file.

I've seen people ask for a 240 dpi image to be sent for review (with no indication of the size they expect). That, to me, is a meaningless request but I see it all the time.

So I wasn't even aware that Symbio has any requirement for dpi (unless there is something that says that a particular file would print at a certain dimension assuming you used 300 dpi). If you use 150 dpi, it would print at twice the size - duh...

If I have been wrong on this all these year, someone please correct me!

Steve

BTW - I've never seen that .html in a downloaded jpeg. Something wrong there.

I think on Dreamstime they have to be up for 6 months before you can delete them - I tried today and it appears that my image was immediately deleted.

Steve

711
I was able to delete my test image directly on the site without any warnings about delays, but you could be right about their partners.

Steve

712
I'm working my way through some of the microstock agencies to delete files that would be better on Alamy as RM. I'll write down all the steps on each agency in a blog post to help others in the future, but I have a recollection in my mind that one site has a clause that says that deleting an image doesn't take effect for 6 months.

Anyone remember who that is?

Nice work, but I noticed, that real address of your Symbio site is
http://shop.anglianwebhosting.com/
and for networking this address should be used by others.

Yes, some nice travel images, but shouldn't some of those with people in - the lifeguards by the sea for instance - be marked as editorial? There is a separate thread about easy ways to include an editorial banner on images that require that statement.

Steve, that's a great "bug" image! I've never been very good at bugs but I admire those who can shoot them well.

Thanks - I don't take them very often but this came out nicely. It was actually hand held with a macro lens and one of those Ray Flash ring flash attachments that attach to an ordinary flash gun. It works really well for shadowless lighting of macro objects and if you balance the shutter speed/aperture to naturally darken the background, the subject stands out very nicely.
I reviewed it on my blog about a year ago if you want to learn more about it: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/04/review-of-ray-flash-ringflash-adapter/

Anyway, back to the subject - I would drop the statement off your home page as well. I'm sure it would annoy me if I was a real buyer (I don't think you see it on Shutterstock plastered all over the page) and I don't think it makes any difference to the non-buyer. I don't think the role of your stock site is to educate the public on the rights and wrongs of using images without permission.

Steve

715
I agree with the others about dropping the statement that this shouldn't be stolen. The people who are going to buy/license the image already know that - the person who is going to just screen copy the image (although that is a pretty strong watermark on yours) would probably do it anyway. So why put off the former? I've also dropped "Royalty Free" throughout my site, including the EULA - as a phrase it is pretty confusing to newcomers and I'm not sure a real buyer needs to see it splashed all over the site.

Whilst talking about bugs (not software ones, so Leo can relax), I found my tomato plants were being decimated earlier in the week. I thought it was a rabbit, but then found these delightful little creatures munching away. Their mouth parts reminded me a lot of Alien...

The site has still vanished for me - both FTP and website, but maybe it is a problem in the internet. If someone can log in, then it must be a temporary issue. Phew - I think they owe me some money...

New Sites - General / Zoonar dead?
« on: July 17, 2013, 13:43 »
I was going through my upload routine this afternoon and found that my FTP failed to Zoonar - with the message that "No address is associated with the nodename" - ie it could not resolve ftp.zoonar.com. Similarly, my browser can no longer find their site.

Has Zoonar bit the dust?

Well, as an avid Symbio site owner, I thinks Jens does actually talk a lot of sense about customer behavior, and his thoughts have been put across carefully and without any attacks, so I think we need to think carefully about what he says, and also about our own experience as buyers (if we have some). Symbio is great as a way to get your own images available online in a form you like, at a price you would like to receive. Having said that, unless it becomes a vanity site, it must also start to sell, regularly. Perhaps a buyer that finds my site will come back and buy a second and third time - I'm not sure as that scenario assumes that their needs for the second and third image is met by my site. If it is met elsewhere in the network, then they start the process again with registration and purchase and a new set of images in a new download location.

We have a great start here, but lets think carefully about all the implications of our approach on that buyer - maybe just having a common registration approach where the buyer can log into all our sites with one login would be a big step forward?

I live near Warsaw (100km), and don't have any stock photo from there. Maybe this summer :)

I only live 3500 miles away, but there is no need to go. There is nothing to see, very boring, dull. Besides, I don't need the competition!  ;D

Great - this is the official version of the updates Igor and I have been testing to improve the upload speed to 4Mbit/s if the stock agency can support that. I blogged about how to use it a week or so back: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2013/07/uploading-to-multiple-stock-agencies-stockuploader/

I think that is the best idea - no-one can say that they didn't see it. I think I will add something similar to my descriptions.

I don't see what the issue is. I have put quite a lot of editorial shots on my site - including some exclusively: http://www.backyardstockphotos.com/image/interior-parish-church-gerlachsheim-germany-5

I note the restriction in the description, also my EULA clearly states that no assumptions should be made about releases unless I specifically say I have one, and, at the end of the day, the use of an image is solely the responsibility of the buyer, not the seller.

Normally I bold these words - the editorial ones - for some reason I didn't on the image I used as an example. I think the use of red font is probably a good idea as well.

SYS is good enough to built a second site and just make it an art piece on its own for just showing eye candy.

Good point - I currently have a Smugmug site that I put (when I get round to it) my fine art photos onto. Once the paid period expires, I think I may try to create a fine art site using Symbio and some of the gallery/slide show plugins that are around.
