Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 6D vs Sony a7 mk II

Both of them are vast overkill for most people.

Definitely for microstock!

I had four of those this morning for $10.50 each, then this afternoon they went down to $6 each - very annoying.  Of course that's better than nothing, but seems very low for an EL and not the very high-value DLs we were led to believe would result from the Google deal.  Hopefully more will follow and at higher payouts to contributors than these - I think $6 for an El is the lowest I've ever had from any agency.  The only bright side is that they are level 2 images that haven't received a ton of DLs previously - I would be very annoyed if it was for high sellers.

prostock - thanks for posting the link to the DT thread.  I looked there this morning but couldn't find anything.

Have you received yours yet?  I had a mysterious wire transfer into my checking account on Dec. 4th.  I just asked at the bank and it was from DACS.  Not for a lot but worth the 5 minutes it took to apply.

This year I had sales pretty much every month through June, then nothing for four months, and then sales again in November and I just looked today and had another, so that makes it the best year ever for sales, not sure about money as the recent ones all seem to be for less, netting me from $3 to $20.  Every time I think they are finished then some sales happen.  With fewer than 800 images online there I am not doing as well as Zero Talent but still OK.  Maybe I will even start submitting again.

I don't think there are any levels at CanStock - subs are always 25 or 30 cents, unless someone knows different

Yes, subs there have always been 25 cents or 30 cents for me.

707
Yes, credit sales have almost completely dried up this year.  Too bad.

I've been with them (and Bigstock) since 2009 and Canstock was always way ahead of BS until this year.  My monthly average this year is less than half what it has been the past three years - it has not been this low since 2011, and with far fewer images.  So far this year Canstock has only made about 60% of what I have been getting on BigStock, and it seems to be getting worse.  Duncan used to come on here and post but hasn't done that in quite a while (as far as I can remember).  My impression is that they are just coasting along until the end.  They used to be pretty good and worth the additional minimal effort but nowadays I am not sure.  Hope they can turn things around.

GL stock don't accept new contributor ! Wow !

They also hardly ever sell anything so you're not missing much, unfortunately.

I'm not the most experienced but I think it is probably a coincidence

Yes, it was definitely fun but now I have a sore knee - it was at at local university and I can't keep up with the young kids like I used to!

review times should be shorter.
Subscription system is wrong on most of them.
Images should be more promoted.
Our income from one sold image should not be bellow 50%

I agree with all of those and would add:
Easy upload process with no categories or controlled vocabulary
Minimum pricing of $5 per image (would prefer higher but that may no longer be realistic)
Negotiating for higher-value sales as SS does with SODs

Featurepics has most of those except for not many sales - I like that agency, just wish they sold more.

DT has always had a larger month-to-month variance than most other agencies but the past few months it really has gone downhill as others have noted - my experience is very similar to Mantis except my numbers are lower.  I suspect the lack of any major deals has hurt them - they had that Google deal but that does not seem to be generating anything long term (for contributors anyway).  Their similars policy also has hurt them - that was a nice idea originally, to keep the database clean, but it seems that buyers have spoken and they prefer tons of choices with an efficient search algorithm to eliminate the chaff.  The levels system at DT also is nice when you get higher-level credit sales but unfortunately those have become very rare - it is now mostly 35-cent subs with the occasional $2 sub sale.  I hope they can turn things around but will not be holding my breath.

I haven't submitted anything to stock sites except Canva and the occasional video since January - once SS started rejecting everything it was no longer worth the effort.  I might do more once the weather turns bad if I get bored but in the meantime am enjoying other activities - I spent the weekend at a swing dance workshop and left my camera gear at home.

This is a great story and excellent photography

Not stock related, but hopefully the photographer will make a lot of money off of a book or something - this is a great use of photography to tell a stoy in my opinion

« on: November 04, 2015, 09:05 »
That's how I interpret that as well.

I've had SODs between $0.49 and $0.66 the past couple of days but fortunately so far no 30 centers.  The only good thing is that the past couple of months the ratio of ODs/SODs/clip sales versus subs has been much higher than usual - so far this month it is running one non-sub to every 3.25 subs, compared to one every 10-15 usually.  Overall volume is down about 25% from last year but the number of non-subs is staying the same or getting better so revenue hasn't decreased that much.  Maybe subs buyers are switching to FT/Adobe but others are sticking with SS?

716
It was a BME for DLs but not for $$$ due to no ELs and very few credit sales in general.  The subs at higher values make a big difference though.  Not sure if it is a blip or will continue.  However, to put it in perspective, so far this year I have made more at Canva than FT with only half as many images online.  FT this year is sixth overall for me, so they still have a long way to go, but this month was a step in the right direction.

717
Yes, up about 50%.  We will see if it continues.

Alamy.com / Re: When is a photo Altered per Alamy standards
« on: October 29, 2015, 08:12 »
I agree with sharpshot, although I'm not sure about HDR - I always put those as altered.  It's generally accepted on all the agencies I think that minor changes to contrast or saturation don't count as altered as long as you haven't added to or removed anything from the original image.  I doubt it makes much difference to buyers, but just in case I always put a note when it is altered what was done - cloning out trash or people I don't want in there, focus stacking, HDR, whatever.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock site is down right now
« on: October 28, 2015, 11:50 »
Weird - mine is down more than 800 images from what it should be.  I assume it's a bug on the contributor side because it's been a good day for sales including an SOD for almost $70 just a few minutes ago.  As long as sales come in I don't care about some weirdness on the contributors side assuming they get it sorted out eventually.

123RF / Re: Strange, no sales in 5 days???
« on: October 25, 2015, 07:58 »
They are really slow this month.  Actually they have been dropping ever since they put in their RC system - 2012 was the peak and it's been downhill since then.  I assume the increase at FT is due at least in part to poaching customers from other agencies like 123 so this is probably the new normal.

721
They are still at 55 times earnings, which I think is overvalued.  Short interest is at 28% - this is very high and implies most investors think it is going down.  They are supposed to announce Q3 results on Nov. 5th, so that will be interesting to see.  I would not buy it right now.

722
123 has definitely dropped the past couple of months and FT has been doing better.  So far this month FT is doing very well - they are #2 after SS - while 123 is all but dead relatively speaking and less than 20% of FT. A pleasant surprise has been a higher RPDL at FT with some very nice subs as well as credit sales, while 123 after putting in the RC system has dropped dramatically.

723
Wow, cobalt - nicely stated!

Alamy.com / Re: ALAMY - Relevance makes no sense
« on: October 15, 2015, 14:40 »
Just started on Alamy with 70 editorial images. What would be a good CTR?

I wouldn't worry about it.  I've never noticed any kind of correlation between CTR and sales - I've had sales when my CTR was very low and none when it was higher.  No sense worrying about something you can't change.

General Stock Discussion / Re: DACS and Alamy

Alamy doesn't list ISBN numbers, are you saying all I need is the sales report from Alamy and DACS will take it from there?

Yes - send them the info in the spreadsheet and they will take it from there.
