This forum has helped me get accepted at IS,SS and FT, so I have no complaints. Anyway, I found out very quickly that delicate flowers are not going to do very well in this business. Although I admit to sulking for a day or so over some of the critiques/rejects I received at a couple of sites I learned from them and it helped me out a great deal in the long run.

I suspect if we all met up face to face over a few cold ones, the majority of us would quite like each other.

A friend of mine over in Boston works for a printing and design company - they finish and print specs from clients....leaflets,news sheets, promotional materials, dvd covers,cd covers etc He says the number of clients sourcing their images from SS and IS is increasing every day and they are dropping (in some cases completely) commissioned shoots as a source. I've read this elsewhere but it's encouraging (for microstockers) to hear it from someone in the business.

how can it be good for business in general ?

of course it's bad, but they've no other alternatives after all.

microstock is to blame for this.
quality is actually too good over there, often better than photos
you find on RM agencies, and all this for a pittance.

microstockers are indeed shooting their own foot accepting
such low prices but who am i to judge now ? it's too late already,
there's no turning back, clients are used to micros and will never
go back to Getty or Alamy or whatever in the middle.

and the next step will be buyers sourcing from Flickr or Wikipedia (!!),
weren't you all telling me to "adapt or die" ?  ;D

Buyers are already sourcing from FLICKR - Getty saw that hence the FLICKR/Getty collection, providing the more realistic/creative work that Yuri and others are always banging on about as the way forward.

But I can't see a way back, with SS (for example) now sitting on 10m images and counting

The sock monkey thing doesn't surprise me.

http://www.sockmonkey.com/

Now there's and idea. I wonder what their Return per SM is and how many they sell. It can't be hard to do. I've got a WHOLE drawer full of socks just sitting there when I could be making $1000's of dollars. I'll start a blog "How I made money in my sleep with Sock Monkeys".

*, Monkeys are already being done. I need to be more original, diverse, maybe Sock Meerkats or something. I'm in the wrong business. I'll let you know how it goes and link to my blog.

Crikey, George Orwell was right. But  I hear this sort of claptrap every day from the founder/owner of the number two computer company... or is it number three, so I'm a little jaded. Anyway, I'm none the bloody wiser, but to you use an expression from my US colleagues "don't piss down my neck and tell me it's raining".

706
They have some really crap stuff on there and that can't be good for business. Seriously ought to bring in an inspection process to reinforce their credibility as a stock site and not an image dump, especially at those prices....otherwise it's just FLICKR with a price tag. Anyway, I've made more sales through FLICKR than Worstphotos (sic)

I appreciate it and am not stopping. I'm doing everything I can to tell people about Cutcaster and talk to as many photo and vector buyers as possible.

More good things to come. What do people think about the new lightboxes we just released?

The lightboxes are fine and I'm seeing plenty of views. If I could get sales I might kick some exclusives/best work CC's way and drop some agencies. Hope you will enable me to do that because I'm getting ripped off at subscription prices.

Good luck to you.

I'd hate to be a buyer, SS just accepted an image of mine with keyword "brainstorm" - so I searched newest first and page after page is filled with models gathered around laptops or standing in random groups doing nothing but flashing too white teeth - also loads drawing meaningless flow charts on transparency boards.

Having worked in the corporate arena for 20+ years I know we don't work in offices cleaner and brighter than operating theatres and everyone walks around with faces like smacked arses (apart from Friday afternoons).

I keep hearing that buyers want realistic images of serious people doing serious work in non-studio locations, but don't see much of that being uploaded.....is this a gap to be exploited or not?

He can afford it. Having just made 300+ people redundant in the UK   >:(

My people shots have always turned out naff, nowhere near good enough, so I'm still on a steep learning curve to get those right. In the meantime I make myself feel better by looking at the portfolio of a guy called "ooyoo" on IS......100K+ DL since 2007 and nearly all landscape shots. His top sellers are really well done shots of leaves.

I don't think you have to do people shots to do well in the top three. I like your portfolio by the way.

I haven't noticed this but I am sure that if you upload something the buyers really like, you will break through your invisible wall.

Everybody wants a breakthrough image  :) On IS for example, some of the guys with 100k DL and a portfolio of 2k plus images have made (in some cases)  20-25% of that DL number out of a very tiny percentage of their portfolio. The old 80-20 rule.

As yet, I don't have any breakthrough images, just steady earners, so musn't grumble  :'(

Adobe Stock / Re: Increase in Credit Value at Fotolia?
« on: February 02, 2010, 18:08 »
I'll probably get jumped on for this - but I don't know how many of you work for corporate entities where this is common practice. For example, my experience working with the number one and two computer companies in the world has been exactly this; whether hiking the price or reducing it, the quick and dirty way to increase your profit/share price always ends up by reducing opex ie. wages and salaries. I've seen top class people leave the company in question and nobody cares as long as Wall Street and London are happy.

And my cynicism extends to not believing the gold plus contributors will really leave Fotolia - it's bad for their business to write off a revenue stream in the belief they can generate it elsewhere in a short time frame.

Prove me wrong but that's been my experience.

I don't see the point in deleting images from a site unless there is a specific issue with the site or that image. That said I have no real reason to continue uploading to CC either. I've been here for over a year and have yet to get a sale. I currently have 335 images online and another 14 or so waiting to be edited. Some glitch removed the titles from the last batch of uploaded images so their sitting in the "pending" section.

I won't remove them but what's the motivation to continue uploading when after a year you still haven't sold anything?

My feelings exactly. I've had more downloads in 6 days since being accepted at SS than I have in four months at CC . The comparison is not quite fair given the time in the business and high profile of SS - but zero sales in three months is uneconomical to pursue.

Sorry, 9 from me, they just approved my application to join. Good news* is, I don't have a further 500 to upload on them.

* not so good news for me

715
From my experience, a few months after joining this forum as a newbie, you have to aim for IS and SS

I started out by contributing to the low earners until I was confident I could meet IS/SS standards. I am now signed up with both and, to give you an example, the 9 images accepted by SS as part of my application generated 11 downloads in 24 hours. Those same images haven't sold once in 3 months on low earner/new sites.

"chasmcn" is right. The stock market in the UK ran around like babies with wet nappies at every announcement on the news, mainly because the big league investors were sweating about losing a few mil off their billion dollar fortunes. It's the little people in small/medium sized companies who are upbeat about the next quarter, and good luck to them.

I prefer to look on the positive side - but reckon some of the new sites/low earners will go.

Still no sales here since joining in September 09 - but 4 sales within a week of uploading my first files to IS. There it is.

Also, I carried out a rough study based on a few images from other stockers that have sold 300+ in two years on IS - the exact same images have only sold once or twice on MP in the same period.

Nice payout if you can get it - but I have no idea how.

Good Luck.

Just noticed they are in the green on the right....I haven't uploaded much since November, but will give this site another go. JG seems determined 2010 will be a good year.

Sounds like a business plan written on the back of a cigarette packet.

But count me in for starting a new agency. I've got several ideas written on the back of a beer mat.

Congratulations!  That is quite an accomplishment, especially with the high standards they have now.

You should celebrate! :D

Managed to bang my knee on the desk after I'd got up to run around the room for a bit. Then settled down over a nice claret with my lady.
