Cameras / Lenses / cheap camera gear
« on: February 12, 2007, 18:19 »
I have been looking around for a little business opportunity, and just found out about drop shipping.

Not sure if you guys know about this. This is where a wholesaler lets you sell their stuff - on eBay for instance - and pays you the difference between the sale price and the wholesale price.

They handle all the stuff, postage etc.

I joined one group in Hong Kong and the Canon gear was about 20% less than the prices on eBay.

Anyone else got any experience in this?

Might be a way just to get cheap gear for  yourself, since there is no minimum purchase numbers.

I have decided it might be worthwhile buying a cheap flash set with umbrellas etc.

what wattage does a flash have to be for it to be worthwhile?

708
Big issue I think is photographers dont seem to be able to think objectively about their own art.

Basically if the designers do not want to buy the image, it doesn't make it crap art, just a crap "product".

It is no different to any other business. Why would you continue to stock your shop with products that dont sell. You dont! Difference being you (the photographer) are the "supplier" and trying to motivate the shop keeper into justifying the shelf space just in case the market changes and all of a sudden your "products" become popular.

I cannot find how to submit to crystal graphics? direct I mean

give you a $1000 ... lol

Why would anyone buy a Canon xti or similar? The semi pro market is really up against it with models like Fuji S9600, this Olympus, Pansonic Lumix.

Astounding value for money. would love to see the pics from it.

Leaf, a bit of constructive criticism is not trashing someone. I make money there as well, but they have never answered even one of my emails, and take sensorship to the extreme.

I think the overarching complaint about DT is their lack of consistency in rejections - and the fact that on this subject they refuse to enter into any dialogue with anyone..

Everyone seems to have the same "we have too many" or something along the lines of "too many variations of the one shot".

And yet when you search the database, there are some big names - who are also reviewers - with 50 or so of the 1 shot, like a model with paint dots on themselves and all over the walls - one shot head this way, next head the other way, bent arm, straight arm etc etc etc: none of which have ever had a sale;

and, you see a similar image (to the one that they rejected of yours for having too many of the same type) approved after they rejected yours.

From the way I have always done business, you should expect your suppliers and customers to follow your own lead on ethical and moral issues. Like, show some strategic leadership and show consistency. And, when you make a promise, follow up on it.

Basically, clean the non-selling crap off the site, forget about the 1 million image ego boost, and stop rejecting ace images.

To date, I have earned $140 from DT, and spent $180 on bandwidth costs uploading the images. So I will be waiting a long time for a return on the investment I have made there.

but how fussy are they. I have probably a thousand images that have been turned down, for silly reasons.

If nobody else accepts them, hey $10!

the reviewers at DT definately monitor this site. after my last post I had a lot of reviewing done quickly.

rather than reject good images, they need to do what they promised: Clean the non-selling crap off their site.

interesting that he works at DT.

and they never gave him that childish rap on the knuckles for posting in the wrong forum thread that everyone else cops.

Must be 10,000 photos of brides on that site?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Banned From Istock! What shall I do?
« on: January 22, 2007, 16:47 »

I received an email in reply saying that 3 of my files were potentially derivative versions of another artists works.

This tells me someone has complained.

It says "derivative" versions which would suggested that your work is derived from another work.

How about you wait until you hear back from iStock before we all pass judgement.

as a wise man once said: Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I applied for one of these positions to take baby photos etc.

personally i think it is all a crock of rot. Watching TV now and the logo for something is being blurred out.

How can anyone suggest that because their logo is visible in the background their trademark is being used. Nobody asked you to put up the sign, and if it is part of a streetscape (for instance) that is either bad or good luck.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Initial Submission, SECOND REJECTION
« on: January 13, 2007, 19:32 »
Firstly, I have to say how amazed I am at the sales you get at SS from what they accept. I only have 12 images there but the sales are incredible.

Yes, they are very fussy. I have one that is an editor's pick at DT and they have rejected it 3 times. It is not unusual for them to reject 40 photos of mine at a time.

If you want to make it there, you are going to have to become very very critical of your own work.

722
they are 40 short tonight. rejected everyone of my last batch.

hope they have more than one reviewer!
