I read a quote in the book "The 4-Hour Work Week" that I think summarizes our situation quite well.

..talking about why not to sell product through many distributors..

"It works like this: Reseller A sells the product for your recommended advertised price of $50, then reseller B sells it for $45 to compete with A, and then C sells it for $40 to compete with A and B .
In no time at all, no one is making profit from selling your product
and reorders disappear. Customers are now accustomed to the lower
pricing and the process is irreversible. The product is dead and you
need to create a new product. This is precisely the reason why so
many companies need to create new product after new product
month after month. It's a headache. "

Sound familiar?
It makes me think a site with exclusive content, which can control the price, certainly has a business edge over the other sites.  It makes the Stocksy strategy (everything image has to be exclusive) seem very smart.

Thoughts?

Explain to me again why we would want to start supporting a site who has a) no video sales history and b) is offering a lower commission to the current market leader Pond5?  Pond5 is offering 50% of the sale ... why would we want to help create competition for them.  It's in our best interest to keep the buyers there...

I have no footage (yet) and I do understand your point but in fact regarding pictures we aren't following that logic, we should but aren't, again its up to you and me and other, the great life of the microstocker ;D

nothing will ever change and the only "guys" taking advantage are agencies!

Yes, you do have a point - I've just starting to feel differently the last months (year or so).  I also read an interesting quote about how creating competition for yourself essentially ruins your market.  I don't feel strong enough about it to pull all my photos I've uploaded on every agency but I am thinking a lot about my actions in the future and what I'll do with future uploads.  I'm starting to think that exclusive content is probably a better solution overall and creating undue, poorly paid competition for yourself is a poor solution.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Self-Hosted at 14.6 - top 5

It depends what people report. I only sell RM at Alamy.
However, if I post my Alamy stats, it punts me into iS indie, so now I've stopped posting Alamy figures.
... I added to the September stats and that included Alamy RM. Where are you seeing that it is classing us as independent if we do that ?
Someone asked about it a few months back and Leaf confirmed that the system would do that.

Leaf, is that still the case?

When I report stats in the poll, I also add Alamy RM, and video sales on SS, Pond5 and ClipCanvas (not that I get many, but it does happen...) so presumably I'd get counted as an Indie too, some of the time anyway.

Would it be possible to change this so we can register ourselves as iStock Exclusives somehow in the poll?

Back to topic though - I too think it would be useful if you could separate out Symbiostock and "other self-hosted".

Yeah, that is still how it works.  It only counts you as exclusive to iStock if that is the only site you vote on.  It gets rather confusing with all the variations as some people are exclusive with just video or just illustration.  There isn't a different poll for the various media types so most people just lump everything together which makes it tough if you are exclusive for one thing somewhere.  And what about the people who have a few (or a lot) of exclusive images on Dreamstime or Fotolia?  If I made 20 different polls nobody would answer them so I tried to keep it as simple as possible.  It isn't perfect and is simply meant to provide a general guide as to which sites are producing and which aren't.  I feel it does that quite well.

I just used the photo release I had and added 'and video' anywhere I saw photo.  so.. The model agrees to appear in photos and video... or ... any photo and video can be edited, altered etc.

Interesting article.

It has always been tough to have a profession that is so 'fun' that people are willing to do it for free.  Sports, photography, writing, music.. these are all things people do in their spare time as hobbies.  It's not too surprising you'll find people willing to do these things for free.  When you finally get tired of doing it for free, it's pretty hard to convince everyone they should pay - especially when they are tons of other people still eagerly and happily doing it for free.

+ Default skin is replaced again with new dark skin.
Previous default skin is available as Flat in settings.
Oldest default skin is available as Classic.

I like the new default skin but find the check marks very hard to see in the bottom 'upload' panel.

There is an almost invisible arrow in the top right corner so you can hide/show that area.  I should just place all that info in the top right corner permanently ... next update.

It is really not very visible for a such important element of the interface.
(Maybe the same orange [or gray] as the logo could be better?)

Of course when you know where it is you see it, but if you don't know it is almost invisible

Yeah, i haven't bothered changing it because I planned to put all the info that drops down in the top right area anyhow... so it is a little more accessible.  Perhaps I should in case it takes long to get to it than I think.

great to hear about the sales guys!

Here's one other thread that mentions pixta

I saw that microstocksubmitter has started supporting it.  It would be interesting to hear peoples experience.

Their royalties and photo pricing seem pretty good

thanks for the thoughts and replies guys.  I'm not expecting everyone to like it (impossible)... personally I think it's a significant improvement over what it was so it'll be staying for now.  Like gillian (and others) have said, the logo is a product of a 99designs contest (which was also announced here for entries) and I felt it was the best option (and there was a thread here asking for votes on which was the best as well) ... and most of all, it's a nice to have a change.  I'm not a designer so letter spacing (kerning) isn't my forte.. I'll take Beppe Grillo's advice though and make a few small changes.

I think perhaps I'll just have to take all the suggestions and rotate to a new logo every day ;)

.. and to those who are complaining about screen real estate being gobbled up - it isn't taking up any more space than before.  I just got ride of a few gradient elements and simplified things.. so it just looks larger at the top....

I may make it a bit smaller though... I'll see how it feels a bit more.

Or maybe something like this:

Yeah, I suppose I agree with the crowd - it does look a bit like microgroup stock.  I've adjusted it a bit now.. similar to what you suggested eltonjones and think it works better like this now on several levels... the group is talking about stock and both group elements are orange and the single word microstock is all together in one color.

Nice interview.  It's very interesting to hear from people who managed to make the move from traditional RF stock to micro.  They have some valuable insight.

This looks great.  I'm looking forward to getting my symbio site up and running as soon as the snow flies and I'm logging office hours more regularly.

The area for microstock services (or outsourcing) would fill that need pretty good.  Do a search for Outsource Microstock and you'll find quite a few threads on the subject here

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Smartphone for stock?
« on: October 17, 2013, 11:42 »
The 4s and higher iphones take really acceptable images for stock and the new 5s has some rather nice features if you feel like forking over the cash for it.  Slow-mo is fun to play with, taking stills while shooting a video is very useful, and the rapid shot is also a great ad-on.  I can't say I've done any mobile stock, even though I have a phone.. it is simply too much work for the pay.  If microstock is going to pay it has to be done in 'bulk' .. do a shoot, take 100 images, keywords and edit all at once and upload.  Taking an image here and there and uploading through the phone is quite laboursom and inefficient.  It could certainly be a hobby and fun... profitable not so much.

Like bhr says - make sure you look at the apps as well when choosing a phone.  Android and iPhone are certainly going to have the best to offer there.

748
You could perhaps put a post in third party services or general stock.  A jobmarket area would be good and usefull if people had a need for it.  I have added forum areas as the need arose and there hasn't really been many threads on that type of thing (yet)

General Stock Discussion / Re: help with model releases...
« on: October 16, 2013, 16:50 »
Thanks for the quick responses, any chance you could pop your version just so i have something to go off and check all is ok with mine

I know its cheeky but im sure you was in my shoes once  ;D

I just use my old version of the IS release, and sometimes the Stocksy one.

Or google for "Getty model release form". That one is (surprisingly) not branded which some agencies have problems with.  ;)

.. except if you use it you'll run into problems with Dreamstime for this part of it
