I had this problem too, I think it was in StockXpert. The original TIFF was perfectly white, then the JPEG, even at a small compression, showed a few stray pixels.
That happens when you don't fill up the white selection at 16 bit with pure white (PS: shift-F5 > white).

This is a well known phenomenon. Read here and scroll down halfway.

PS Don't worry FD :)
I did the same last Christmas - painting my house. What a mess, God, never again  :)
The worst is when the fag resting on the edge of the paint container falls in the paint.  :P

lol, it sounds funny from this time...
What can you do than just laugh? I lost a lot since my bank (or their overpaid "managers") had the clever idea to invest in American hot air balloons like Lehman. I lost thousand past May by the temporary euro collapse as I'm involved in outsourcing. The Asian gang of exchange traders led the demented panic as they are 6 hrs ahead of the EU and 12 hrs of NYC.

Watching the local Asian news channels, they don't even know where Europe is! They don't look at fundamentals, they are like headless chicken. If foreign debt was the issue, why not tackle the Yen since Japan has the highest foreign debt/BNP and it's dying of old age? Why still pick on the Euro when Hungary had problems? Hungary is not part of the Eurozone, as if they know.

They are ignorant, but not too ignorant to walk away with giant bonuses. Of course it all subsided when the Germans promised to pay off the Greeks by working till 67 years old. But nothing changed, and yet the Euro went back to 1.30$. At least a mortal flaw of the euro was exposed: don't take in countries that have a different economic lifestyle or productivity. Greece should never have been taken in, and probably not Spain and Portugal too. There were rumors then that Germany and the Netherlands would return to the good old Mark, and put an end to the reckless expansion both of the EU and the euro zone. Those voices will get stronger when it happens again...

Live from Brussels, for a couple of months  :P

i don't think they want anyone to reach the $1.4/photo level since you'll need 400 approvals.
That's the only reason I spent days copypasting the IPTC since they can't read it. I was well on my way till suddenly the reject ratio went from 90% approval to 70% reject. With hundreds in the q I can still make it when they go back to 40% reject.  If not, my time copypasting is wasted. I have 300 more in the edit q but I'm not motivated at the moment to copypaste my description in all. Painting my apartment myself and saving on the 10 euro hourly wage brings in more money. That goes for microstock in general, I suppose.

I remember when my father got his monthly salary once. He wanted to convert it to German Marks, and he should get around 10 Marks. So he rushed to the bank to exchange those dinars for German Marks. When he got to the bank, his salary already lost it's value and became only 2 German Marks.
So hyperinflation is very good to breed sprinters  ;)

That's exactly what happened to me. They started approving almost everything and then it went from bad to worse from there. Some of the rejections were just ridiculous. Then to top it off they have never fixed the problem with their search engine as far as I can tell.
Same here. Started with 95% acceptance, now down to 70% refusal. Unbelievable rejection reasons. I don't think they even look at the image, they just have to reject many because they stretched themselves too much with the dash for cash program. Loads of dash left but no cash. It's also suggested by the unilateral heightening of their payout limit to 100$, so they made us lenders and not earners.

The search engine will never be fixed since they don't consider it broken. It's not a bug, it's a feature.  ;)

Well..... its 6 weeks now... and I have added more images.  But still no review?????
Sometimes they take 30 or so. As I'm slowly approaching the 400 under the dash for cash super premium, my reject ratio went up to 65%. Often best sellers on other sites. The most rejects are that the images are technically sound but Veer customers aren't interested in that type of content. I wonder why they sell then on other sites. Maybe Veer customers are from Mars?
Whatever, I think it will be at least October when they overcame their slack.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Shutterstock for Newbies
« on: August 18, 2010, 05:08 »
I think you'll find most of the people who participate in this forum have been slogging at this for years, and are some of the most experienced people in the industry.  They are very far from being beginners looking to click on referral links.
When it quacks like a duck, it looks like a duck, it walks like a duck... I assume it's a duck. If you are posting SS referral links in the message body with no images on SS at all, you're most probably a duck referral hunter.
For every new site I try to find referrals on the forum, but I can find them very well myself. As to a "conclusion" about the state of the industry, I enjoy reading people with more than 0 images on SS.

I have been looking in to Microstock a lot over the last couple of week and just wanted to share a conclusion with you.
With no images on SS and FT, and 3 at DT? No thanks. Another referral hunter? Jarrod, I assume. For dumping your referrals in every thread, you are at least 2 years to late. Ploink.

123RF / Re: 123rf support non existent?
« on: August 18, 2010, 04:36 »
Anglee, on what criteria are the images included into EVO collection? I searched for "old man"  among EVO only and well... judge for yourself. Majority of those less-than-300 photos are from a handful of contributors only and there are a LOT of similar shots.

http://www.123rf.com/search.php?word=old+man&Submit=Search&t_word=&t_lang=en&search_evo=1&srch_lang=en&cko=0&imgtype=0&exppl=0&pplcnt=0&srchgender=0&srchage=0&exclude=&itemsperpage=100&orderby=
The old man from contributor ostill says "isolated" and it's not isolated at all. You can see the grey at the edges. Things like that drive buyers crazy. Keyword spam, non-isolated "isolated" shots... I'm very very glad I'm buying at DT and not there. Sigh.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Which sites accept editorial?
« on: August 17, 2010, 21:57 »
I had a feeling iStock didn't and neither did Veer since the photos I was looking for only showed feet.
You can also see it on (the absence of realistic) city views.
It's also almost impossible to upload buildings on BigStock, SS or IS unless not as main focus. Must have to do with the warranty. DT is still very lenient on it. The warranty was really a bad move (DT hasn't one) as buyers are responsible for the use and many times they don't need that warranty.
Istock not having editorial is giving away market share to DT since there is a large market for editorial and mixed commercial/editorial.

Back on topic, I think marketing people will always want natural looking, above average appearance people.
Quote
It has been said that image buyers want real people, guys and gals nextdoor. Plain friendly people that everybody can identify with. But that's simply not true. What they like and what viewers of advertisement like are models they wished to live nextdoor, not the ones that actually live nextdoor.

I know Big Stock, Dreamstime and Shutterstock do, but does iStock and Veer and any of those other smaller ones???
No: iStock, Veer, FT - Yes: 123RF.
SS: only accepts newsworthy, not the full range of editorial.

For what it's worth to void artifact rejections on IS:

- Make sure your shot is properly lighted or slightly overexposed: check your luminance histogram at the right frequently during the shoot.

- If the histogram isn't filled up at both sides, don't dare to extend contrast or lighten up the shot: you're cooking pixels that aren't there. Most of my "distortion" rejects came from that.

- Don't post-process a lot, except cloning pimples and logos. Don't use saturation but only color match not over 110%. Include the color profile in your JPG.

- Upload full size, don't resize. Istock reviewers are more lenient on native size images than on resized ones. If it's not tack sharp originally, throw the shot away. Use a monopod always.

- isolations: don't artificially use a tiny feather on areas not in focus. Leave those blurred.

- buy a proper cam for stock; a 5DII will do; you might get lucky with lesser cams but only in optimal conditions.

- istock reviewers are practically always right.

743
- sunsets
That's funny since one of my best selling non-editorials over sites is a sunset.
I would add "models" to your list too. Don't shoot models. People are all over the sites.  ;)
If people with stethoscopes are out, try ducks with a stethoscope. At the moment I'm making friends with some pigs in a neighbor's backyard. As soon as they don't throw off their headset any more, I hope to make some piggy callcenter agents shots. ;-)

What to shoot?

A "fag" still is a cigarette in the UK.  Didn't realise it ever was used that way across the pond.  You'd never know it from the responses us Brits generally get when we use it over there (or in forums)  :D
Jolly good old chap. I dig it.  ;)

When you meet an Australian he says "hi mite" and and American always asks "what's up?". I always found that a very indiscreet question, especially when wearing loose pants.
Mixing up slangs by non-native speakers (like me) can sometimes be embarrassing. I remember during part of my PhD working in a Silicon Valley joint and at a (rather informal) meeting I exclaimed "bullsh@t!". Everybody turned pale. I just assumed that it was a normal expression to express doubt since the word is commonly used in American movies.

In the Philippines, American B action movies are wildly popular and also rapper music clips. They assume that expressions like "f@ck, (piece of) sh@t, give it to me man, what's your problem man" are common and accepted in American daily life.  ::) Funny are also accents. Filipinos can't pronounce K, they pronounce it like G. Most people (on markets etc...) use often the phrase "It's OK" but it sounds like "it's so gay".  ;D

Anyways, God really hates smokers:

StockFresh / Re: StockFresh - from Peter Hamza and Andras Pfaff
« on: August 17, 2010, 07:40 »
I have very few isolates, and most of my port was accepted - so don't give up.
I got worried when they rejected downsized 5DII images for technical reasons, while forbidding iStock accepted them full-size. Examples: http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=12855259 or http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=13626957 but there are more. Whatever, I will take it up in an email.

This is funny because we have the same reviewers and same rejection reasons we used to have on StockXpert, especially in the early days ;)
I'd better take this up in an email. StockXpert sold very well for me, but mostly landmarks/land/seascape stuff with little competition. All my models were accepted but it's very competitive there.

I just wondered the collection was focused on conventional stock stuff, like "Veer".
I have over 50% rejections there with the reason the image is technically sound but "won't please the Veer audience".

748
Thanks for bringing up this issue. We have a system to counter/automate this issue but it was overlooked because of they're "old accounts". Our keywording specialist is on top of this now. A warning letter will be issued for these spammers. And, of course, we'll be on continual lookout.
Thanks. It's in fact a great image, but it turns up in front of many searches. An experience like that can ruin a prospective buyer's experience. You might consider a flagging system like Dreamstime has. It works well there.

Their domain is 8 years old. Perhaps they were a conventional stock agency before? Anyways, thanks for the info and keep reporting. Make sure to post your referral link (if they have any) when the time is there.

How come that you are calling this cite a loser?
What are your experiences there? How much they earn for you as a percentage of (for instance) your SS portfolio?
Update: We are temporarily closed for new suppliers.
