Alamy.com / Workflow for Alamy
« on: September 06, 2006, 09:09 »
What is your workflow for alamy.

Does it differ to the microstocks (other than the upsize at the end).

I have finally got around to shottig raw and am thinking of trying alamy.

Edit: what do you use to upsize.  I currently only have Elements but I dont think they accept teh upsizing that is done in this program 9only v7 and CS).  Is there any good freeware?  I dont want to invest incase I dont get accepted and even if I do, until I get sales.

Featurepics also got rid of them after a while (always optional) so I wasted a bit of time there.

Sales are slow but I get a few a month.  with high payout 70% it does as good a some of the other sites.  However, it does need to take off a bit in order for me to get a payout.

This new extended license seems interested.  Will wait to see how it works out (I have activated for all images)

The only one of interest is the small business one.  Not enough info though -  do we get more money - if so how much. how do we activate it.  Why only small businesses.

I kind of hope they dont make it big - I am not currently submitting to them (since currently they haven't sounded promising) so it would just be another to add to the list.

So let me know how they go and only once they start getting good sales, can someone give me a referal link.

I would like one email only but with all the names on.  Shutterstocks is useless as I dont track photo number.

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Don't USM Sharpen?
« on: September 02, 2006, 03:10 »
I stopped sharpening on the basis that it should be done only one and as the last step by the designer.  I have started to sharpen again but only on selective areas and only to a minor amount (i find it brings out detail on brickwork better).

The most promising thing about Phils 7 sales is not that he got 7, but that they stumped up a full$100 each for them (since he is on gold he can charge more and get a bigger cut).

This is promising as it means that people aren't looking just for ones with low prices (there are only three photographers who can charge $100???).

Have you emailed/contacted the Olivers?  I am sure they have some wacky name for it.

Are they resizing to standard sizes rather than what ever weird dimensions you provide - ie. to the dimensions that correspond to their pricing plan??

I agree with IRCrockett.  It will reduce the risk of too many simlar rejections.  Once you have one photo in the que, all later uploads are added to that place so you have to wait until they have been reviewed before you upload more.

Alternatively get them all up there as time on site is the most important thing.  You wont get a DL it it isn't there.

Interesting - so when does the 30Di come out then? Is the sensor better than the 8,p or just bigger?  Sensor cleaning is a postive.

I dont think hobbies are taxable in the UK but I could be wrong.
LOL! If you earn money its not a hobby anymore i pay taxes since 15years for my hobby :)
I'm not a UK resident but just think about it you have to declare your income thats the same in every country i know. if you spend more money on cameras than you earn then you probably don't have to pay taxes but you still have to declare it.
I retract my statement above.

Hobbies are definately not taxable in New Zealand.  As NZ is a commonwealth country and our tax system is loosely based on the UK I made an assumption.

Anyway - my expenses far outwieght any income, even if only allocated 25% business - 75% personal.

I think it is only for US tax residents.

Has anyone tryied downlaoding your own photos. Is it against the rules.

I agree it is pointless for me to be able to buy photos.  I take photos and would only uses ones that are significant to me in some way.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Extended licences compared
« on: August 17, 2006, 11:52 »
Phil -  do you think by having your prices above the majority of others (ie at $100 compared to $10 or $20) you are reducing possible sales.

I am nearly at bronze with Fotolia and am yet to decide whether I will raise my prices.  Still trying to figure out who the buyers are and what they are willing to spend.

744
How they monitor the sale will be interesting but we have to assume Fotolia have this under control (has anyone ever asked how any of the sites track sales and if it is audited to ensure they account for the sale to us properly - With the internet, we have to trust and I think Fotlia is reputable at this stage.  They have pulled out of other deals where the photographer was getting a bad deal).

I think it makes sense the way payment works.  TM buys a single use photo (1 or 2 credits).  If someone buys the template, TM acts as agent to buy another photo from Fotolia (for 1 or 2 credits).  they could do this with EL but as another poster said, that would be a huge upfront cost.

745
The normal problem with web templates i think is that they buy a photo once and use again and again.  This appears to solve the problem by giving you a cut of each sale.

I think I am happy unless I here something to the contrary.

here is an alexa graph of traffic, unfortunate to say, but istock looks pretty strong.

Offtopic post but:
These graphs are quite interesting - I had a look once at all the established sites.  If you look at just 2006, there is very little growth in the industry.  especially given the number of submiters is growing fast.

My only issue with the uploader is that if ICPT data isnt read (sometimes my ones just donw work on any site) you have to add words individually - you cant cut and paste a lot separated by commas.

Kacper - The inital ones take a while but after than it is quick - they dont always tell you though so check your portfolio. originally they sent you an email listing all approave shots, after than I got an email saying they were approved but with no details. now I dont get anything. (this is not a gripe - just a statement).

749
I think we are feeling the effect of low sales growth compared to high portfolio growth as all the big players jumped in.  With such an easy upload, there were able to get in fast and easy and have diluted the sales considerable.

As it is stillnew and has a good backer (Jupiter??? - I always get this one wrong), I wouldn't write it off so soon.  It depends on whether the backer wants to start marketing it and risk taking it sown market share.

It has good sales for a new site.  Worth sticking with as potential rising star.

No sales this week which is unusual, I would normally have at least one.  My only batch in the last 2 months just got accepted today so they will be new in time fo the weekend - oh well.
