Dreamstime.com / Re: Most searched for with fewest results
« on: December 15, 2009, 01:02 »
True, '3d landscape rendered terrain' turns up only 10 images. But '3d landscape rendered' turns up 17 pages of images of 3D renders of terrain. Maybe the people who have 3D landscape images just need to add 'terrain' to their keywords instead of creating and uploading new images?

That said, I love the way DT lists the keywords used to find an image with the other dl info. It is a very informative feature.

...I would be willing to bet, even if independents profits were cut in half at IStock, most independents would remain.

Absolutely. No one is going anywhere. There's no reason to abandon istock. If I'm making $10 a month at istock, I'd still stick around. That's my coffee budget for 2 weeks. :)
Dreamstime's pricing is just as variable with their various levels.  is it really a big deal when the difference is a few dollars?
But DT's prices vary according to the image's popularity. That more popular images cost more should make at least some sense to a buyer. But what sense does it make to a buyer that he has to pay more because the creator of the image is exclusive at IS?

If the buyers can't sort between the regular collection and the exclusive collection, then they are going to be seeing a mix of prices on the images, which I would think they would find very annoying, and if they can sort some way or even tell which is which without zooming, then it could greatly pump up independent sales. Maybe some of them will realize that the cheaper images are available even cheaper elsewhere... Somehow I doubt most IS buyers are that price concious though.

Not cost conscious?

Lower prices on non-exclusive images could backfire on IS and the exclusives and have the opposite effect than that intended: increased sales for non-exclusives. Then IS will have to re-stack the deck yet again to give more advantatges to its pets.

It depends on what you mean by '3D toons'. You might have a look at Poser/DAZStudio, it might be what you are looking for.

Bigstock.com / Re: Increase in BigStock downloads lately?
« on: November 18, 2009, 17:13 »
At SS, my per-day OD sales are DOWN 27% in November.
At BigStock, my per-day sales are UP 22% in November.
Having a very good November at DT (on a BME pace, but of course Thanksgiving will probably ruin that), so maybe it really is getting some of the lost SS ODs?

« on: November 17, 2009, 17:48 »
I got 22 JIU subscription dls today, 1 Photos.com PPD yesterday. But no Photos.com subscription dls since the Nov 13 D-Day, and I used to average about 10 of those per day. My Stockxpert PPDs seem to be improving in the last few days, but that could just be a fluke. I am opted in on IS but not a single "Partner Program" sale has registered on my stats page there. What does it all mean? The ways of Getty are mysterious indeed.

StockXpert is sticking to its plan, so we will see . . . .

It is still possible to have your images available at both Photos.com and JIU through iStockphoto. If you are already an iStockphoto contributor and have opted-in to their Partner Program, your images will become available at Photos.com on November 12.

You will incur a more than 15% cut in an already industry-leading low commission rate, but perhaps you will make it up in volume.

That's strange, the blue sentence seems to have been inadvertently forgotten.  ;D
They also omitted,

Note that even if you already are a non-exclusive iStock contributor, your best selling StockXpert images will still not be available on Photos.com and JIU due to the fact that iStock rejected those images because they are not stock.

Which explains why the date keeps getting pushed back...
Has it been officially been pushed back again? I was expecting zeroes for my JIU-Photos.com sales on StockXpert post-Nov.3 but instead I have had two of my best days ever. I can't find anything recent about this on the StockXpert or IS forums.

735
That's crazy! I love it!
It's great! RoboPhotoshop. The system could pay us automatically and include the cost of stock images in the final bill to the client.  Microtransactions, the realization of Ted Nelson's Xanadu vision at last.

736
I got more of the big Fotosearch sales when they were first bought out.  They have slowed down the past couple of months.
Same here. I miss those $20+ sales popping up now and then in my CanStockPhoto sales, which are otherwise pretty meager.

FT are possibly nearly twice the turnover of DT already and the gap is widening on a monthly basis.
That's very surprising. Where did you get your data? I would have thought it the other way around.

hey....   I'm still getting JIU sales on StockXpert....
what's the latest?  werent they supposed to be shut down by now? 8)=tom
Same here - I'm not complaining as sales continure to be steady.
Same here (knock wood). I hope that Getty is abandoning their plan to replace StockXpert images with IS ones on JIU. IS has been rejecting a higher percentage of my simpler 'clip art' vectors, and I am convinced that this is their policy. They want only more complex vectors, no matter the commercial value or lack thereof. My simple vectors far outsell my complex ones, and clip art sells great on JIU. Even if my IS images sell well on JIU, I will still lose most of my revenue there because IS rejects my best images.

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS sells mostly outside US?
« on: September 09, 2009, 13:33 »
I noticed the same results a couple of weeks ago with non-US sales far larger than US sales - it did not make sense to me though because the vast majoirty of my sales  occur during North American business hours -  so it got me wondering how SS determines the "nationality source" of sales - it could be that the sales are to companies operating in the US but that the companies are actually incorporated offshore, as probably the majority of US companies are. Could that explain it?
I wonder about this also. My SS sales are only 30% US, but it seems to me that US holidays (such as Labor Day) and US business hours have a much greater than 30% impact on my sales fluctuations.  Could offshore-incorporated companies be buying enough images to account for the US-timing impact?

Great link. It was nice to see 'vector stock' #1 on the list of rising searches. ;D

Re the subject of subscriptions on DT.
-DT has a RPD (Revenue per Download) stat on its stats page, including their average RPD. This helps people can see how subscriptions may be affecting their sales.
-DT has stated, as I recall, that they will watch to see whether or not subscriptions are hurting the revenues of contributors and make adjustments if this happens.
How many other sites have done this?

Why would DT have more reason to lock threads about subscriptions than other sites have?

742
I seem to recall a business model which gives away all its pictures and still has managed to eke out a profit of a few hundreds of billions of dollars over the years. A little business called 'broadcast TV'. I think it still brings in quite a bit more revenue than Getty does.

Google is busting its a$$ trying to find a way to make billions from Youtube, which gives away moving pictures. Anybody want to bet that they will not succeed? If people want something there will always be some people who will give it away, and others who will make a lot of money selling it.

743
^^^I think they said our images will be on photos.com and JIU untill the end of August.
Yeah, I'm still selling on the other two,... in fact, the sales there  (jiu & photo) are up a bit.  Dont know if it means anything or just a coincidence. 8)=tom
Same here. Maybe the customers who have subscriptions on jiu and photo are grabbing what they can before the StockXpert images are removed?

I haven't heard anything for the past two months.  I used to get a sales report email and prompt payment every month.
Same here. I miss them! :-[

Hi fintastique missed the thread  :)
Well MS-Earnings are down (is it just the normal summer or more we will see) but I did have a fantastic month at macro so this month was actually one of my best in stock.
Interesting. My sales were down from July by 9% and my year-over-year increase was only 3%, making July my worst month ever, in a relative sense.

Could it be that the economy has really started to improve, and some buyers are going back to more expensive image markets?

746
I am in the US, I got an FT payment yesterday, it took 8 days, a little longer than usual.

I think this is a great idea. I have often wondered why more sites don't tier prices by image the way DT does instead of by imagist, systems like the IS Vetta thing or whatever it is called and their 'cannisters', which smack of favoritism and elitism to me. I do submit to VS and I hope they take this suggestion.

I'm curious what is the longest time you've spent on a single illustration?
I probably spent about four hours on a hand-trace of a limousine once. I make no claim to being an 'artist'. I make elements and combine them. So most images I make don't take much time.

I suggested a file ranking system like DT, where the price goes up as the file sells.. I also suggested that (no matter how complex) all the files should enter the database at 1 credit and go up as they sell like DT. This provides them with lots of 1 credit files, and rewards best selling files.. They were quick to repy to my email and said they have similar ideas in mind..

My guess would be that they might let istock exclusives put their portfolios on StockXpert and lower non-exclusive commissions.  That would be the final straw for me.  I would leave StockXpert and stop uploading to istock.
That's an interesting idea; I wonder if they have thought of it. It might tempt some people who consider exclusivity with IS but are afraid to put all their eggs in one basket. Two baskets would be a little safer. Still, all the problems with submitting to IS (rejection of qualilty images, slow submission process, etc) would not be alleviated, unless IS exclusives could also somehow be allowed to submit to StockXpert instead of or in addition to IS.

My sales have slowed a little. I wonder if buyers are having any of the same IE8 issues which have made logging in difficult for some submitters?
