This whole concept seems very interresting.  And for me, since I do not have any talent in web design (but have lots of other talents  :D ) I would even agree to pay for a standard web template which would be usable without any (or little) modification.

Selling this template could be a way to generate cash flow.

Great!

And what is quite interresting is that they seem to introduce the notion of size in their downloads!  Are they going to fix subsriptions DL based on size?

Lots of great ideas here!

So I jump in with few more:

I remember the talks we had here two years ago about a Co-op of photographers and after some research about such co-ops, I found back then that it is a lot of work to set up and I can not afford to transform what I consider as a part-time hobby/job into a full-time job  And I guess Im not the only one in this situation!

But here are some thoughts, based on what I red here:

We can group ourselves and use a unique template to build our own individual site.  On this template, buyers would have the possibility to

1. search within this private site,

2. search within an existing site (lets say FeaturesPic (or any other site!)) but only within the group of photographers

3. search trough the whole FP site.

Benefits:

For the individual, possibility of selling a photo directly,  or receiving a referenced commission plus a bonus (?) because of the association, or receive a regular reference commission.  Plus the possibility to structure ourselves and maybe in a few years (or months?!) start our own site.

For the group, more sales, more visibility, more commission (to be negociated?)

For the site, more sales, much more visibility, possibility of exclusive content. ( I really like Flemmishdream's idea of a month of exclusivity)

What do you think about it?

To start up, what we need is:

1. Form a group (that's the easy job  ;) )

2. Negociate and/or build a template  (I have no idea of what this work represent, just to get an idea, lets figure we are 50 photographers and we pitch 50$ in the bucket; thats 2500$ for the template)

3. Negociate as an entity with sites that offer the greatest commissions (or any site)

4. Sell!

What do you think about it?

Correction: the raise happens after 500$, not 500 dl's  ;)

Claude,

That would create a hard push for some contributors to become exclusive but IS might lose big moneymakers like Yuri. It could work out for top contributors if it forced out some of the middle of the road contributors, reducing the size of the collection. They could get more exposure.

Hummm...
Getty would still sell Yury's and other major non-exclusives through StockXpert or Photos.com.  From a business point of vue, I don't think that Getty would care from which channel they sell photos.

And a full exclusive site would bring some new buyers, that's for sure!

Claude

82
Lets take it in another way...

Step 1: Setting up a merge between photos.com and iSttock
Step 2: Asking exclusives to select photos to sell trough Photos.com and  (step 2b) removing them from iStock
Step 3: Pushing non-exclusives to Photos.com.

The only model this industry has not try till now is a full exclusive content.  So going this way, iStock (or Getty) would have a regular site to compete with the actual market AND a full exclusive to offer something buyers can't find anywhere else.

Think about it...

Welcome back,

If you want a photo of a pig to illustrate a concept of swine flu, you search for pigs, not flu...

I am a better photograph than I was back in the film era.  But I'm not sure if it is because of stock photo or because of the digital cameras I bought to do stock...

As we all know, digital photography gives you the possibility to see instant results and this is what made me better.

On the other hand, as SharpShot said, I tend to take only stock style photos, leaving behind the artistic side of photography...  Do you remember when noise was called grain and when we worked hard to make that cool grainy black and white shots?

We are now losing the only subscription system that allowed different prices for different sizes.

I don't think we should be glad...

Claude

Cool!

So you're doing videos with a Canon 5D... Why did you buy a 5D MKII?
 ;D

Claude

88
I just ordered a 5DII. Now Nikon will probably announce a D700X in the next few days  ;D

Even if they do so, you'll never regret your move   ;)

Claude

Oh, thanx!

and then on which link do I have to click?

What is National Trust and what kind of properties do they own?

Are they some kind of banks with branches everywhere or some landowner who owns (public) places and/or parks?

What or who will prioritize the keywords?  I understand that most of the time, between 2 and 5 KW are enough to describe a photo (in my opinion!) but when there are more than 10, how the system will chose the main KWs?

Use of the same words in the title?
In the description?
The first 2 or 3 KW used by the submitter?
Manually done by the reviewer?

I wonder...

Guess there is a market for polar bears eating penguins, both for the buyers who better, and for the ones that don't. Could be fun making one, unfortunately I have pictures of neither species.

To do so, you have to bring a polar bear from north pole to south pole and then take pictures of the bear eating penguins.  Or you can catch some penguins on the south pole and bring them to the bears on the north pole...

Then if you sell 30000 photos of your bear you can make some profit...

And remember to bring back the bear!

Computer Hardware / Re: Computer System question
« on: April 03, 2009, 16:02 »
I do have an integrated card reader on my HP computer and I remember reading that since it is a multiple card reader, you should remove the card without clicking on the You can now remove safely your card icon in the bottom Vista bar.  By doing so, you are disabling the reader and you should restart your computer to use it again.

So since then, I remove my cf card directly.

I'm in no way a tech savvy and I can't tell you anything more about it but that's what I red...

Only minor issue I have had is that the 24-105 kit lens tends to have a fair amount of cyan/red fringing in high contrast situations, but that's easily corrected in post processing or by using the 24-70 instead.

Interesting point... As I said earlier, I plan to buy a MKII in a few weeks and I'm thinking of getting the kit with that lens.  I hope I won't regret it but the kit is only 700$CA more than the body only.  And the 24-70 is 1355$CA alone, and I just can't afford that 655$ more!

And since my actual main lens is a Sigma 17-70 digital, I need one of these lenses.

live view is awesome for macro (if you do alot of micro its a must).

John

Agree on this; I do have it on my actual 40D and I always use it when the camera is mounted on a tripod to fine tune focus.

Canon / Canon 5D MKII users, still in love with your camera?
« on: March 28, 2009, 22:31 »
I know I know, there are many threads about the (not so) new 5D MKII...

But when Canon released it, I decided to wait until spring to buy one.  I thought that Canon would lower its price after a few months.  Well I was wrong, in fact, there is a raise since few weeks here in Canada...

But for you guys who already have one, what are your thoughts about it?
What are the new features that you like best? (high ISO, HD Video, what else?)
Did you have any problems / bugs with it?
What does Canon should have done better (if any)?

I'm on my way to buy one mid april so I'm asking!

Lighting / Re: Ring flash for macro
« on: March 08, 2009, 14:37 »
I do have the 100mm macro and I bought last summer the MR-14EX.  At that time, I was planning buying the Sigma equivalent, which is about 100$ less than the Canon but I change my mind when I realised that the Canon can act as the master with my 430EX.  At that time, nobody could say if the Sigma can do the same; still don't know.

I don't remember all the tech specs but what I can say is when you need to use a flash on a macro shot, the MR-14EX gives you some light, but not enough...

I went yesterday to photograph live butterflies.  So I wanted fast speed and small aperture for a large DOF.  You can't have both, even with the flash...

What I should have done is bring with me my other flash and with both flashes (and a tripod, which was forbidden there) I would certainly have made better photos...

So my MR-14EX gives me some mixed emotions; I like it and I don't regret this purchase, but it is not perfect, and in that sense, I am wondering if the MR-24EX would have been a better choice.  But at 200$ more, it was way over my initial budget!

Anyway, thanks for the explanation, it makes little more sense to me now!

One way of avoiding this situation might be to show a generic mention like Copyright by Various Artists or something like this (I'm not a lawyer...).

What if somebody registers with the name Lynx?  :P

Or with Various Artists ?   :D
