after Bruces departure, none in the Admin is a fully fledged business-man as such,  l

Bruce was a fully fledged business man? I thought he was a rocker and a photographer who happened to stumble upon a great idea that took on a life of its own. From my understanding, he had several failed ventures before iStock.

I think one of the reasons iStock flourised is BECAUSE Bruce WASN'T a fully fledged business man. If he was, he never would have cared about the contributors or the buyers, just the bottom line.

AND, what makes you think he cared all that much?? because he said so?  ofcourse he cared, that was in his interest but lets not fool ourselves, he did sell out to Getty, fully aware of their reputation, fully aware of their business methods, i.e.  buy something, leave it alone for a couple of years and then BANG!  its a classic indead.

It takes one to know one. Apart from that, he is a swell guy.

When all is said and done, money talks and BS walks.

ETA: the site turned BS (spelled out) into the word "crap", funny but does not make the point.

If you go to a department store the fancy stuff is always in the window. I guess it's like that ?

Not sure that department store is a good analogy - isn't the average age of a department store customer over 65?

I shop at Macy's all the time and I am not over 65... Yet. They have great sales that are easy to find.

If you look at amazon.com (to cite but one example of this sort of search interface in an online store), when you look at home theatre systems, there are search panels on the left that let you search by brand, by watts, by price (with a list of set ranges and then a from and to text entry field where you specify your price range), rating, etc.. I'm not sure why this successful business model for online shopping is one that Getty/iStock disdain. It seems to be working pretty well for amazon.
[/quote]

Totally agree with this, MOST online stores have a sort by price. Seems to work out just fine.

ETA: sorry this post looks weird, I don't know how to break quotes.

I suspect iStock is trying to exploit buyer ignorance - believing that they will not realise there is still cheaper stuff and will not realise that there are alternative sites, so they will pay the price regardless, thinking there is no alternative. It probably works, up to a point. Long term, though, if the buyers get the feeling they are being taken for suckers, it seems certain to backfire.

This are my thoughts also. At one point IS was the only game in town with quality. That is no longer the case and buyers are wising up.

My company recently switched to a yearly subscription to Shutterstock from PAYG with IS. We now only purchase from IS if we can't find what we need at Shutterstock (which does not happen often). We have gone from $1000 per month at IS to maybe $100 per month and we are mostly print so we buy L and up sizes.

I would like to see his istockportfolio as well. There are loads of 1 image trolls with opinions...

ain't that the truth!!!

Not as many as 1000+ image trolls with opinions.

I also wondered if istock had yet another horrible bug that was causing entire portfolios and people to disappear.

Let's not start scaremongering. It isn't a bug.

Of course not, and I wasn't at all implying that within the context of where you extracted that part. I initially wondered why he so mysteriously disappeared - if there was another bug, if he had voluntarily left, or just what. And in my very first sentence of my post above I stated that I wasn't about to speculate. :-)

Skdesigns... We (the reasonable readers) all understood your meaning and that you were concerned, not speculating. vlad the impaled just likes to quote out of context.

What a stupid question form newbee OP?!
Question is in class how many times you have sex with wife eg per day week month, or for what you vote for or whats you income...
Sorry, and what's wrong with taking an unscientific poll of what people are earning on iStock?  I think it's something people are curious about which is why I posted it.  Interesting that 27 people on this site have chosen to ignore you.  No wonder.

Just ignore the angry parrot, so much vitriol from such a beautiful bird... Or is that a parakeet??

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Getty and Corbis Monopoly by Piclet
« on: March 30, 2011, 19:48 »
Nice timeline, very easy to follow.

We use to buy RF regularly from Corbis, Alamy, AGE and Getty until IS got as good as it is around 2008-2009 or so (image-quality wise that is).  My shop now mostly buys from Shutterstock and IS. We only go to Getty for the occasional RM stunner for a cover or full page glamour shot.

Slider... I don't need no stinkn' slider.

March has always been my BME. This year way, way, down, the rabbit hole.

It's a program that should have been shut down long ago, and resources invested elsewhere.

But would that not mean Paulywood would be out of a job. He seems like a nice guy who is just trying to tow the company line. It took almost a week for him to answer in the thread about what is taking so long.

The logo program is dead but they are keeping it on life support, why??

Veer / Re: How is veer with vectors?
« on: March 21, 2011, 07:23 »
I have a 99% acceptance with Veer. Not the same with others, so IME Veer is not tougher on acceptance, they just take a long time to review.

Oh, then...

If Shutterstock lowers payments to a flat $.10 and takes the rest and buys weed to sell to little kids, I'd certainly not want to sell there.

^Relieved to hear this.  ;)

Whatever the motivations of IS, money is going to those in a horribly tragic situation. Even though IS behavior and competence has been less than stellar recently, I highly doubt they would steal the money or screw the pooch on this one. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt this time only, even though I donated through a different matching organization.

Veer / Re: How is veer with vectors?

The only rejections I get from Veer is the technical one that states I have open paths. But there aren't any, just unfilled strokes that for whatever reason their automated or human inspectors don't know the difference. All were accepted by IS and they are notorious for their technical rejections.

I maybe sell one or two a month there but the $7 royalty is nice. Only had one payout in a year, but close to the second one now.  :)

Excellent info. I will look at this a little differently from now on.

Thanks.

Some of the posts from Admins and Moderators never cease to amaze me. Kelvinjay is now telling everyone almost mockingly to just to calm down and take a valium when there are peoples' livelihoods at stake. Unbelievable.

That is so rude and inaccurate. Valium is for pain, Xanax is the chill pill of choice. Can't even get medication right. Geez.

Actually Valium is used mainly for people with anxiety disorders. It can be used for withdrawal symptoms from alcohol, muscle spasms, seizures, insomnia and sometimes used for pain by reducing the agitation by relaxing your muscles.

Mea culpa.

My better half took valium for four days after throat surgery and my boss became addicted to it (and went to rehab) for back pain. Did not know it was for anxiety. Either way it is a very powerful and addictive drug and should not be made light of...

JJ is writing and promises to post about the search issue. I am (literally) holding my breath. I so look forward to his posts :)

Me too. When JJ posts I always touch my monitor, just to feel the warmth of his sincerity.

I just touch myself. Oops did I say that out loud.

Still can't find the frickin slider, I must be blind.

But I will say the search is working better, I can enter more than one word in the main search box and then drill down with the secondary box. Too bad it took two months of pain to get his to work right.

Probably the most annoying thing on SS. Sometimes I type it in perfectly and it still makes me do it again. Aaargh... Why is this necessary every time? NO other site requires this.

Shutterstock.com / Re: How many downloads in a day?
« on: March 18, 2011, 19:58 »
Most in one day was 25 but that was in the first month I started. I average about 5 per day now but that is only because I no longer feed the beast. Life got in the way.
