If we apply simple statistics and keep in mind a gaussian distribution of population there has to be a % of photographers that make a living out of this.  How many (and how big a %) is the million dollar question... I guess we will never know, many (if not most) submiters spend little time at forums and most wouldn't give the info away either.  For me, it pays my (ever growing) new equipment, my family vacation and some monthly bills...

El microstock debe ser una parte de tu negocio, si es que planeas vivir de la fotografía.  Produce, pero cada vez requiere más esfuerzo para poder ganar más, la relación fotos nuevas-aumento de ingresos ha dejado de ser lineal, ahora 50% más fotos no significa 50% más ingresos...

Yo participo en stock tradicional, en trabajos comisionados, tomo bodas, eventos, y todo eso además de mi tabajo principal...

Andrés habla de 300... pero son 300 de entre miles... Y el millón de ventas no es un millón de ganancia... Cada día, para competir, tienes que gastar más y aún eso no es garantía de que venderás para cubrir los crecientes costos. 

Insisto, produce un ingreso que no es despreciable, pero debes considerarlo como una parte de tu actividad fotográfica, no como la única actividad.

Para stock nunca nuunca nunca uses salvar para web, degrada la imagen mucho.

Cuando entré en FT lo hice en español... un desastre... me cambiaron al sitio en inglés y desde entonces cero problemas...

En Veer casi no pasa nada, lo he monitoreado en varios foros y todos dicen lo mismo.

Cutcaster suena interesante, pero aún no pasa nada tampoco.

The3dStudio es el más promisorio.  Aceptan las fotos sin problemas, es sencillo, tiene 13 años en el negocio (una eternidad) de imágenes 3d y están comenzando con el stock.  Tiene mucho tráfico (en menos de una semana mis 600 fotos tienen 7500 vistas) y ya hay ventas regulares reportadas (en una semana en ellos no he vendido aún, pero el tráfico es tan grande que espero que pronto caiga la primera).  En mi web hice una pequeña nota sobre el sitio, por si interesa, en español.  No tienen pago mínimo, no tienen suscripciones, el precio mínimo es alto y el % al fotógrafo es generoso, creo que vale la pena!

De los que preguntan es el único en el que he considerado entrar.

I do think that more than pure numbers it is the quality of the pics we submit and the quality of the concepts we capture the most important thing to work for in the future.  I remember the days that I uploaded a ton of textures and my dl's soared for days... Now it wouldn´t make sense.  We have to produce good to great quality pics with strong concepts to compete in the current environment.

So you got 1 cent per copy for your image... It was obvious that the image was important to them.  You should have got a better price for your image, this is too low.  Always keep in mind that there is a world beyond micros and their microprices.

I see microstock income as a long term investment.  From my experience (personal) after more than a year and a half of not uploading my income has become stable (very stable, indeed).  It is not fantastic, but surprisingly it is quite nice for not doing anything at all in a long time.  With that in mind I'm goint to restart working with a goal set a year from now, or more.  I'll keep in mind that there will be good days and bad days, sometimes my income will not match my uploads.

And I will keep working my RM images and my assignments as usual, since those are my real earners.

No le veo mayores problemas, siempre y cuando te lo tomes en serio.  Yo comencé en 2005 y lo dejé a inicios del 2008... Todos mis portafolios pegaron en lo que yo llamo una "meseta", las descargas son esporádicas, unos días más y otros menos... Me ha dado lo suficiente para pagar las vacaciones de toda la familia en los dos últimos años y pagarán las del 2009 (lo veo como mi ahorro vacacional).

Dejando este comercial de lado, te puedo decir que varias cosas hay que considerar como importantes:  primero, la calidad, segundo, los temas.  Ya la foto de un celular en un fondo blanco no vale la pena.  Es sencillo.  Igualmente la foto de la chica con fondo blanco y con un audífono en la cabeza tampoco durará mucho vendiendo.  Es imprescindible buscar nichos dentro de las colecciones, concentrarse más o menos en ellos y producir fotos de gran calidad (ojo, no digo grandes megapixeles, hablo de calidad fotográfica).  Investigando yo he encontrado el nicho en el que voy a trabajar, cada uno encontrará el que le acomode, según sus gustos, pero la idea de tomar lo que ya está tomado mil veces no lleva a ninguna parte, menos cuando muchas de esas fotos son de mediana calidad (o menos calidad de las que ya están).

Otra cosa es que, siendo un negocio, hay que invertir:  luces, espacio, "props" o artículos para los montajes, incluso conseguir modelos (no necesariamente cuestan dinero).  Hay que aprender y hay que probar, echar hacia adelante.  De que hay dinero involucrado lo hay, pero para verlo tienes que ser bueno.  Los días de "pón las imágenes ociosas en tu disco duro a ganar dinero" ya pasaron (acabaron como en 2006...).

Por último, no se matriculen en todas las agencias que hay, trabajen con cinco o siete de las principales, aprendan a sacarles el jugo, qué entra en una, qué en otra.  No todas son iguales y diluir el esfuerzo en cuanta agencia existe no vale la pena.

Ah, y nunca nunca nunca olviden a las agencias tradicionales que licencian imágenes en "rights managed" o en "rights protected", esas producen mucho dinero si se tienen los portafolios correctos.

Al final, después de llenarlo, además de pensar que me morderían una parte muy grande del pastel me he dado cuenta de que lo que han cobrado, sobre mis ventas totales, apenas llega al 3.07%... Definitivamente que no hay problemas con esto.  Lo malo es que ahora una de las compañías nuevas, the3dstudio, también está pidiendo esto, y encima piden el ITIN.  Espero que lo solucionen antes de que pase mucho tiempo. 

The problem with the 70D is that is sounds too close to D70, and next would be the 80 & 90 D (sounds familiar... D90...).  This naming also separates the model from the old Canon D60.  Too many models and too little combinations available. 

This number makes sense, it is actually a bridge between the classic xxD series and the upper series.  You can still have a 50D MKII and no problems with the naming with that.

I concurr that the 7D it is what the 5DII should have been.

he raises the bar, but still is getting underpaid for the quality he offers.  How many of his clients will pay top money for his photos out of the microworld once they find out they can get the "good enough" pic from Dreamstime for what would amount to less than the VAT of a comissioned work?  And I hace to admit that in his case a "good enough" pic is a superlative pic!  The problem I see is that many of us don`t see beyond the micros...  Yes, they are here to stay.  Yes, pros are entering every day and rising the bar.  And yes, there is work that, despite being at micros, shouldn`t be, at least for the prices currently being paid at most sites and the cost of producing high quality images.

PD is mostly worthless... Four years ago I began hearing from them and since nothing has changed (or happened with them).  MyLoupe is another waste of time.

Remember that, at some point, the number of files you have online becomes a bit secondary to the quality of your images, their uniqueness, the demand on what you are shooting, variety, being a top player o a specific niche...  All those issues become important, sometimes more than the simple number of pics.  How many "girl with headset" images are out there?  How many handshakes?  Many people still shoot these and other usual subjects and expect to have lots of sales.  Innovate and execute and sales will come.  Take this from a guy that did everything wrong the first time around and, after researching, has found out the hard way...

The answer should be thanks, but no thanks... All the previous reasons are on target... Tell them NO!

I love this!!!!  The notion that buyers are lazy idiots seems to be behind this...  If they built Vetta on new, previously unreleased material, its value would be clear.  Seeing this case (and I bet there are hundreds) will only devaluate the collection in the long run.

Maybe they dont want us to notice that subs will eventually take over sales, good for them but not for us...

They had issues with Moneybookers a while ago (2-3 months ago) and then sorted them out... This is new...

Took the plunge last night, 15 pics up and 40+views during the night! Now, that is something... I can wait for the ITIN thing to be sorted out, I will keep uploading from now on... The only hassle is the 25 photo limit at a time, but it is sooooo easy to do that I can live with that.  Good site you've got going there.

For what I see I really like the idea of selling thru this site.  The ITIN is a hassle (perhaps too big)...  I will wait and see what happens regarding this issue.  My porfolio is not too big (I shoot more editorial than RF) but this year I am going to work more on the RF front and I would like this site to be in my list.
