Congratulations!  I wish I had your courage to quit my job too!   How much have you diversified, or are you 100% stockphotography ?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Depressing January
« on: January 30, 2011, 13:39 »
Just checked my stats and my January downloads at Istock are down with 25% compared to January 2010.   Sales figure is down 23%.   If royalty % AND number of downloads go down at Istock, we'll have a GREAT 2011 !  Fortunately, Shutterstock and Fotolia went up and covered the loss.

David, I'm having problems with my BigStockphoto account at Lightburner.  I typed and retyped the correct login name and password, but Lightburner does not accept it : "please verify your user credentials and try again".  I checked the login/password on the BigStock website and they worked, so what's wrong?  It cannot be a capital letter problem, as I copy/paste my passwords, and there are no characters like @ or $ in the password.

General Midstock / Re: Rodeo doing summer cleaning?
« on: January 21, 2011, 04:52 »
I also asked (mail) questions, and I got an answer in autumn.  They were working on important website changes which would probably last till November.  I have been monitoring the site since then, and until today nothing has changed.  Sales are going down, and no new images have been added since June (I sent a dvd in June, and the images are not on-line yet).
I have no idea how big their backlog must be!

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia cuts commissions again

I may be wrong, but did I notice correctly that the subscription royalties did NOT go down?
I cannot find the old charts, but right now (I'm gold) I get 0.33 and 0.38, and the new charts show the same.
If that's correct, then the lowering of the royalty % will only affect half of my sales (and probably everybody's sales), since about 50% of my Fotolia sales are subscriptions.
Wrong calculation?

My boss clicks on the "print" icon, again, and again, and again, and then he's surprised that the printer produces 6 copies of the same document!   :D

The issue with [re-]uploads/autosubmit is fixed now, thanks for pointing me on this problem.

The difference between Assign and Edit modes was a side note. You are absolutely right - if all you want to do is just to add a new channel to a set of files Assign is just fine for that.

LightBurner will also offer free portfolio promotional tools quite soon - could give yet another reason to keep your thumbnails & previews in your account instead of manually deleting them (high res is deleted anyway after 4 days)

OK thanks David for fixing it - I'll be uploading again in a few days, and I won't delete anything manually, just because I'm curious about the new promotional tools  ;)

759

Please note that Assign 'adds' new stuff to the existing settings (e.g. adds a new channel without removing previously selected), while Edit (both single or multiple files) completely overwrites the settings.

I also noticed that you got only 15 images in your LB portfolio. Do you typically delete the images from your LightBurner account after their submission to the channels?

To start with your question : yes I manually delete them when all photos have reached their destination - as I don't use LB for statistics.

As for the difference between edit/assign : sorry, I don't understand your explanation.  Why would I use EDIT when I simply want to send the files to 1 single channel, without editing anything, not even add categories?  Don't forget that I got this problem when I re-uploaded the files, so they were completely new to LB.

760
In "portfolio" :  I click "select all", then "Assign" - then in the pop-up menu I click the box next to Graphicleftovers + Apply.  I don't touch the other tab pages, as I do categories etc. on the stocksites.

For your info :  for every site, via "my account", every site is saved with only the top box (submit to approval queue) ticked, all other boxes are/were empty (including the very important "automatically submit all new uploads").

I don't think the whole series was automatically submitted when I assigned the pics to Graphicleftovers, I think the went to all sites as soon as they were uploaded, but why?
Did I do anything wrong?

761
I switched off all channels a few days before resubmitting to LB.  And when I checked after resubmitting, they were STILL switched off.

762
Yesterday, I messed up completely :  I had sent a batch to all sites a week ago.  Then I noticed Graphicleftovers had not received them.  Of course, stupid me only noticed this AFTER deleting the images on Lightburner.  So I re-uploaded them to LB, and assigned them to Graphicleftovers only.  What happened :  LB sent them again to ALL sites, except Fotolia which I had configured manually.  In "preferences" of every site, I had switched OFF the "automatic sending".  I checked every channel, it was still switched off.
How can I prevent this from happening again?  I have been deleting for almost an hour ...

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your 2010?
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:25 »
Shutterstock 7% up compared to 2009 sales.
fotolia          11% (largest growth in absolute figures)
istock            1%
dreamstime 15%
bigstock    -0,5%
Xpert           -90%  (1st two months before they stopped)
123rf            63%  (congratulations 123rf!)
Total       4,3% growth compared to 2009.

Cutcaster, Canstock and Graphicleftovers were added in 2010 to cover up the loss of StockXpert.  They did so for only 16% :
graphicleftovers  4% of Xpert 2009 sales
canstock  12%  of Xpert 2009 sales
cutcaster  0%

Total growth compared to 2009 was 4,3% in dollars, but 11% in euros!
Conclusion :  BIG slowdown in growth, but I expected worse, especially in the 2nd half of 2010.
On the other hand :  I'm a real pessimist, so my forecasts are ALWAYS very low, and things usually turn out better than expected  :D
For 2011, I expect sales to go under 2010 (here's the pessimist again!) because of the Istock royalty-cut, the dollar-rate and the general tendency in the larger portfolios (my average portfolio went from 3100 to 4000 in 2010).

Happy new year to you all,
may there be a Big Boost in downloads AND royalties on every microstock site!

General Stock Discussion / Re: December 2010 earnings thread
« on: January 02, 2011, 02:31 »
If I don't count macro/midstock I had exactly the same sales as last year's December, which was a good month.  So I'm not complaining.  Shutterstock did very well and covered the loss at Istock.
As for the non micro sites :  Rodeo did VERY bad, but that's understandable, since they have not been adding any images since summertime.  It's rather difficult to have successful sales of my newest holiday photos if the site just puts them in the freezer instead of showing them on their site  ;D

Canon / Re: Canon 5DMkII = less microstock acceptance?
« on: December 30, 2010, 02:20 »
I started using the 5DMkII a year ago.   My rejection rate at Istock went down, which was a very welcome effect.  No change on the other sites.  I still have images of older cameras to submit, and every time I get an "artifact" rejection at Istock, it's one of the older images.

merry christmas to you all!  My christmas will be on 28th December only :  my sister is on duty in the old people's home where she works, so we decided to "move christmas" 3 days later.

767
Not even close!

768
I have used LightBurner now for most sites, but not on Fotolia yet.  It is possible to send to Fotolia without sending the photos straight into the inspection queue?  If not, I'll keep on sending them with FTP separately.

769
I uploaded 10 images, but even after 10 hours they have not appeared in my "portfolio".  Think I'm doing something wrong, but what?  I'm seeing two folders on the remote site ("downloads" and "upload").  Since the root did not accept files, I put them in "upload".  Wrong?

Shutterstock.com / Re: Huh? Can they do it like this?
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:24 »
Amai, da's serieus ambetant!!
Back to English :  from other posts I understand that SS does NOT close down portfolios when the copyright infringement is about one or a few subjects in photos (like a car or logo).  They just remove the image and give you a warning.
If it were an angry model, you'd know - as models usually talk to the photographer first when they get mad.
I believe for 100% that you did not steal any (raw) images from anybody.
A false accusation?  I can hardly believe someone is accusing you of copying, since copying ideas of bestsellers is done by every newcomer (a group you don't belong to).
So what's left except a complete misunderstanding for which SS should apologize, and maybe even redeem by choosing one of your images as photo-of-the-week ...
(ik zal duimen hoor!)

I am very (and pleasantly) surprised that November turned out to be a BME, but only JUST (with 2% over March and 4% over November last year).  Still, it is good news, considering the loss of StockXpert this spring.

BME is thanks to Shutterstock, Dreamstime, Fotolia, 123rf and Canstock (all BME's), but despite Istock, Bigstock (VERY bad), and, of course : Rodeo.

As for Rodeo, it is not a surprise at all that they're more than 30% down from last year : they haven't added an image since July.  I have a queue waiting of more than 500 images, including lots of holiday photos.

Yes, 3 people images in November.  Two of them were Christmas photos.

Adobe Stock / Re: EL price change at Fotolia?
« on: November 17, 2010, 01:08 »
Thanks for pointing that out.  I am gold and my upper EL limit has gone from 150 to 100.  Even for my one and only exclusive image!!

I don't see Istockphoto as one of the destinations?  The ability to upload to Istock was my main reason to join Isyndica - will it be added to PicWorkflow soon ?

My anglefinder + knee-protectors - I like a VERY low angle, but I hate lying on my belly.
Collapsable reflector, Cokin filter set (ND grads mostly), tripod, fingerless gloves in winter.
