123RF / Re: Do you make $100/month at 123RF?
« on: January 15, 2009, 18:06 »
I have a totally opposite experience. For me FT and StockXpert are the only sites, other than SS and IS that have regular sales. I had 3 sales on 123rf in the last 4-5 months.

I am surprised that simply being used on a gay magazine or website can be construed as "sensitive use" according to istock's legal department.  Does that mean that someone being portrayed as hispanic, or jewish, or republican, or whatever if they aren't is also sensitive use if the model objects?

I totally agree. Who's going to define what "sensitive" is. Perhaps appearing in a religious, or a "racial minority" specific magazine can be offensive to someone? I'm sure many people get offended with many different things. I sincerely hope that being gay, or Hispanic, or ... makes no difference i many people's minds. For those for whom it still does, it's their problem and they should deal with it.

The model signed the MR, which means he agreed to the terms of it. I see no issue there.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Sold my firs file at CanStockPhoto
« on: January 15, 2009, 13:46 »
Congratulations!!

754
What helped me in my application was when a friend of mine posted pictures on the IS forum. He posted links to ten pictures of mine, and through suggestions and reviews I was able to pick the three for application.
Maybe something to consider.

755
I can't imagine any reason they would do this.  Walmart doesn't get together with Target and Kmart to pay suppliers, ya know?

Exactly. Oh well, that's why it is just wishful thinking. :)

756
I know it's just a wishful thinking but it would be really nice if earnings from all the sites could be bundled together in one account for photographers. This way, the photographers with smaller portfolios, and those who participate in sites where sales are seldom, could get paid more often.

Perhaps it could be a business opportunity, for a company to offer a bundled account service. The problem is, the stock sites would not be interested in that, as they wouldn't see any benefit. Any thoughts on this?

Adobe Stock / Re: Are you wishing Fotolia to be the new Istock?
« on: January 14, 2009, 17:02 »
FT was my best earner before I joined IS and SS. In the same time, DT is almost non-existent for me. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong.  I like the website and review consistency, but I can't seem to sell there. And yes, I would certainly like to see it performing better. IN the same time, I have been selling very consistently on FT. I only joined IS in November and so far I am satisfied with the RPI there.

Congratulations whitechild!  It must feel good to sell one your first pictures, and the price can't be much better than that :)

Shutterstock.com / Re: 2nd attempt and rejected again
« on: January 12, 2009, 16:05 »
I think a good practice is posting your pictures on the SS forum for reviews and comments. It has helped me a lot and after a couple of months of figuring out what pictures to apply with, I got accepted the first time with 2 rejected, one of them for keywords.
There are some really good people out there on their forum and they want to help.

I still don't think NASA should allow commercial use.

Regards,
Adelaide

I am grateful that they allow it. In a way it makes sense that they do since they are a US government agency, funded by taxpayers money. Besides, they have a monopoly on these pictures, and if they had commercial gain from them, it would be against the monopoly laws.

I agree with m@m. I removed my file from other sites as well now. Thank you!

Thank you for all the answers! I will be more cautious next time when it comes to this issue. It IS better to err on a safe side.

Cutcaster / Model release for editorial?
« on: January 08, 2009, 18:38 »
I just had one editorial picture rejected on CutCaster with the following reason:
"Model release required for children even if editorial"

I don't believe this can be true? It would not be reasonable to expect journalists that take pictures on the streets to run after parents of every kid in the picture for their MR.

Any thoughts on this?

I tend to use aperture mode for outdoor shots unless it's an action shot where I use fast shutter speeds, or low light where I usually use auto mode when time is of essence and ISO is set to auto (normally 100 otherwise). I use tripod usually for shooting objects at home, or night pictures outside. (I think I need to start using tripod more often.)

I shoot RAW images, which I save in one folder per shooting names by theme and date. I do some processing in CNX2, usually lighting adjustments, and then save an 8-bit TIF file to finish the processing in Ps. I also fill keywords within Ps, and later save a level 12 jpg in a folder "To submit". These get eventually moved to "Submitted". I don't keep track of rejected or approved per stock site, although at times I save a separate copy for a particular site (usually IS). I backup all images (RAW, TIF, Ps, and JPG) to another PC over home network, from time to time.

I use SmartFtp to upload to all sites at once.

General Stock Discussion / Re: is the holiday season over, yet?
« on: January 08, 2009, 03:37 »
Things really picked up today everywhere except IS. And believe it or not, some Christmas images were amongst those sold. So I guess the holidays not over for some  :)

Actually, January 7th is orthodox Christmas so it makes sense, I even sold a related icon yesterday. :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: December 2008 earnings breakdown

Thanks Adelaide, I understand your position. My portfolio is small, and SS is a big part of my earnings, that is why I asked.
Obrigado,
Denis

Newbie Discussion / Re: Canon or Nikon?
« on: January 03, 2009, 01:21 »
I believe it's a matter of being used to one brand. I got D80 simply because I used F70 (or N70 in USA) before. If you are familiar with D70, you would probably have a less of a learning curve with a D90. D90 is also a very new model, together with a flash SB-900.

« on: January 03, 2009, 01:15 »
Congratulations and welcome to the community! :) I started only in August last year and got accepted at SS in November also from the first time but it took me some learning as to what to do and help from other members of the community. You should be proud of your achievement as you did it all by yourself and in a few days. I wish you all the best and I'm sure you will see lots of sales in future!

I do backups on another PC at home. I do plan to get an external HDD to have backups there as well. These days, one cen get 1TB for around $100 on sale.

Note: If your free account is inactive for 90 consecutive days, it will be deleted.

Wow, thanks RacePhoto for pointing this out, I missed this "little" note as it is not written there in the main paragraph about limits of the free account. I already renew one Pro account that I had for free, but now I'm thinking what to do with the other one. I didn't mind having two different ones so far as they were for free, but to pay for both it might be too much.

Does it mean that we don't' have to report the income if it is less than $600? I also wanted to ask, if we report an income, can we also claim expenses, such as photo equipment?
