Whether it will be brought back or not remains to be seen. We don't respond nice when threatened, especially with hacker-like maneuvers.

Yes, there are scripts all over to break captchas. My interest was just technical, why on earth would anybody use HTML to upload, and not FTP.

I never wanted to use PSM for the plain reason that it has no factual business info on its site. No real-world address. Where are they, who are they? The only thing they have is a sitemail to contact. If anything would go wrong, how would one go after them?

For those wanting to upload to several sites there is Filezilla, open source and free. You can schedule your uploads to as many sites very easily, then leave it running alone. It's safe since you login info stays on your disk.

If server load is a concern though, the load of statistics gathering scripts like Lookstat is much heavier. I wonder what DT's position is on scripts like that. DT will easily find out since all the requests come from the same IP. Did Rahul of Lookstat consult with DT about that?

Computer Hardware / Re: Drobo Robotic Storage - your workflow
« on: February 24, 2009, 20:07 »
Just think about this. A RAID is overkill for home use. It covers against online failures if you have to have a lot of data at your fingertips. Not really suited for nearline backup.

The price is a normal disk x 4.
It's still the same enclosure on one place.
Fire, dropping it, voltage disasters, flooding, will all destroy it.

For half the price you can buy 2 normal USB external disks and store one at a different location, offline, unpowered, high and dry.

There is a 1TB disk for 109 euro from Iomega... buy 2.

Microstock News / Re: Jupitermedia Shareholders Approve Getty Sale
« on: February 24, 2009, 18:33 »
This may explain why sales from JUI and Photos.com have all but stopped the last week or so.  And yes, sales at StockXpert are pretty bad too.

The point is we just don't know what will happen with StockXpert. The corporate alpha-monkeys have some newspeak for it, like strategic alliances and blablala. They get some fat bonuses then leave to the next corporation to wreck it. Nah, I didn't mention Veer.  :P

A simple shoemaker at the end of the street has more commercial sense than those corporate dumbos. I've always said that, and since October 2008 I'm sure. I just spent too much time in the corporate habitat, I'm afraid. What's Gettys intention with StockXpert? We just can guess and hope or fear.

Will Veer leave our keywords alone? SV used to alter my keywords for the worst, that's one of the reasons I stopped uploading there.

Yes, PSM works over HTTP.

Ah ok, thanks for the explanation! In that case they really added the captcha to hit PSM, thereby annoying everybody else, since the import from the FTP server is very much delayed. There is a thread about it at the DT forum but all they did was a warning against third party software, and they didn't reply on the PSM question since 2/21.

As was mentioned in another forum, the slogan Get $100 or $500 just by uploading photos is a bit deceptive. It's not a bonus for uploading, but just an advance on the sales you will make. So when you received your 100$, you won't get any money on sales till they exceed 100$.

I'll pass, mainly because of the exceptionally long lock-in period of a year for all images and the red tape involved to cancel an account. Good luck!

Dreamstime.com / Re: Editorial at Dreamstime
« on: February 23, 2009, 20:05 »
Does anyone got editorial on Dreamstime or microstock who saw many downloads from this licence category

I have an editorial in my top 7 at DT: chinese sweat shop interior. A mediocre photo but in demand since it seems to be unique. All China travelers seem to focus on the Square of Heavenly Peace and the Bejing Opera  ;D
DT is very strict and peculiar on editorial. I have 60% reject on it for mystical reasons so I stopped uploading editorial there, since it counts for your overall percentage.

I wrote a short blog post on this matter letting other customers know what happened and also sent an email to Dreamstime. Let's see what they answer.

Does PSM uses the HTML upload? Why not FTP? Anything HTML depends on parsing and that's vulnerable if the site is hostile. They could replace the CAPTCHA from upload to login. FTP they can't block this way.

« on: February 23, 2009, 17:25 »
Yes, it does. We don't want your photos, because we have too many and to assist with that, we are blocking "outside" uploading.

What do they mean by "outside uploading"? Uploading by third party software?

Once again, the problem was the import from the FTP servers into the unfinished section, NOT Prostockmaster. That problem was solved over the weekend. I guess Prostockmaster uses FTP, right? The CAPTCHA code only applies to HTML upload.

As to the CAPTCHA, DT is probably targeted by junkbots that explore all entry forms on the net, especially those of high-profile sites. Automated uploading of junk can cause unnecessary server and bandwidth load, and reviewer time. If that's the case, I don't understand why DT removed the posts on the forum.

Yes DT is very finicky about mentioning third party products that access the site, like that Russian keywording program. They blanked out the link on the DT forum last week, keeping issuing warnings not to allow other sites have your login/pass.

« on: February 23, 2009, 08:02 »
does every site have its own model releases? or can I upload istock model releases to other sites?

No site will accept a form from another site, at least not with the site name on it. As a shortcut, you can just blank out the Istk name on your existing releases. For the future, it's better to use a generic form.

My generic MRF has been accepted at all known sites. It's a combination of the IStk and SS ones without mentioning an agency. Download the DOC format and prefill in your own info in OpenOffice or in MS-Word.

Download all-in-1 (minor,adult,property)
Download adult (more room to write)

Make sure names are filled in in PRINT letters or Dreamstime can object.

which sites would you recommend I go to first?

I heard that the Shutterstock application process can take a while. Better start there with a fresh nickname. If all went well, you can cancel IStk exclusivity.

I use DeepMeta for everything to do with managing my iStock port.

Fantastic program. I know the guy that made it.

it would be tough going back to 15 uploads per week, but it would also force me to be more selective. so not necessarily a bad thing. I need to be prepared for the month ro two that it will take me to establish myself elsewhere too.

Except for Shutterstock that emphasizes new contributors and images, you will have a lean couple of months. DT takes over a week to approve, and they only start to sell weeks later. SS takes long to approve, but you can use a "roommate" (other nick). I figure your IS port will stay as it is, so no worries there.

as for keywords, I am already very clean with keywording. so I think I would be fine there. I use obvious, clean and applicable keywords only most of the time. sometimes after acceptance I add more after searching for my images and seeing keywords  I missed.

Keywording is less pain at other sites but I hope you put them in the IPTC.

I have a good acceptance rate at IS, so I am hoping my work is good enough for other sites too.

For sure. Istock is the most demanding, at least for non-exclusives.

right now seems like a good time because I am totally scr*wed on iStock right now anyways. my sales are awful.

FYI: I upload all my shots (the same) to 8 sites. Istock makes 8% of my earnings. As a non-exclusive there, acceptance is much tougher though. They only have 1/4 of my port because of upload restrictions and stupid rejects for keywords etc. Workload is OK if you use FTP. That's a magic word not in the vocabulary of istock  :P

Couldn't agree more. I'm certainly not putting my best photography on sale for 20 cents an image.

Just got a mail that 6 should go to the dollar bin. Fine for me but I deactivated them.

As an aside; shank please do tell why you were booted from the istock forums.

I checked out of curiosity. It must be years since the istock forums make me yooh! vomit. Shank told a lady in a discussion that the only thing that smelled at his house was the @ss of his dog, and that was his last message.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Vivozoom
« on: February 22, 2009, 23:13 »
For some, the microstock model is a step too far and they will seek solace in RM.

Donnelt, you sound like a very wise guy, but if you're the main programmer of Vivozoom (I hope you are not), I would suggest you'd fire yourself and go breeding carrots or organic veggies. Pardon my French, but I did programming for a living and photography is just fun. Vivozoom is a programming Tchernobyl. First there was the stupid issue with passwords, some code that one can find on all open source forums or even redhot. It took many weeks to solve. Then there is the multipage Model Release attach which is slow like hell.

Hey, just look at Cutcaster, YAY, 123RF as I suggested by email. Simple and fast. Vivo's MRF is even worse than Zymmetrical, and that means a lot. Incidentally, Zymmetrical sells. Just buy the code of YAY or Cutcaster, OK?

For a few weeks, I can't even access Vivo by Firefox since the site comes up CCS-less. I have to use the infamous IE for it. No problem, since I benchmark on 4 browsers myself, but anyways.

In all your wise-talk here, you carefully avoided to answer a few critical questions. First of all how much will Vivozoom pay, being another subscription site. A lot of wisecracks here but never an answer, except "more than Shutterstock". Sure, but give a number, like 1,2,3.

Of the few non-model shots I've uploaded many of my best-sellers at other sites got rejected. Fine for me, since I'm a snapshooter anyways. I understand Vivo only wants the best, and I wish you a lot of success running after RT and Sean Locke. After breaking my head again on the complicated and slow upload and MRF system I just decided Vivo and me are no match. No regrets, you've got AndresR already. Why bother about small shrimps like us? ;-)

Wish you all the best and success! I will mail your boss to cancel my account. I'm sorry but I don't have time for badly programmed subscription alpha sites. ;-)

Honestly, good luck.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Woah - new upload system from canstock
« on: February 22, 2009, 16:40 »
I'm currently uploading all last year's stuff but I didn't see the new MRF section. On a side note, it's always dangerous to leave a site before it's really dead. Some people canceled their CanStockPhoto account a year ago for the miserable subscription sales. Now with the takeover, hell broke lose with the ELs. It's something to think about when leaving YAY or MP...

Update: yes, you have to enter by the "beta". Great programming, as always, from Duncan. IT-wise, CanStockPhoto has always been amongst the best.

Can we apply the same 20 day principle to Vivozoom that you have applied to Shutterstock?  What figure do you get?

Nobody here knows the potential of Vivozoom yet.

Then tell me if you're Ok with your image being sold for 'only 14 cents'?  http://www.fotolia.com/id/11366176.  (their words not mine)

You should compare yourself to Midstock, not to Fotolia  :P

Yes, ELs are a very important part of our model.

Good to hear.

Now get out and take some more great photographs and tell me if the new model release attach is working for you.

Yes Sir!

PS.  We don't do free images.  (sometimes is what you don't do that defines you as much as what you do)

Free images are a bit irrelevant since nobody in his right mind allows it. The ones that tried it had thousands of downloads with no effect whatsoever on their paying portfolio.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Vivozoom
« on: February 20, 2009, 04:32 »
Their submit home page says 25c and 30c if you earn over 500 USD.   FD says 33c and RT says 38c. Confusing, isn't it?

It's 0.33$ for a 25/day subscription download, but the average per image on a day can be higher of course if you have On Demand downloads (1.07$ or 2.48$) or Extended (28$). The confusion is that the number of downloads shown (leftmost column) includes all types summed up.

Take day #2: N=23 of which 25/day N=22x0.33$=7.26$ + 1 OnDemand for 1.07$, total=8.33$, or 0.36$ RPI for that day. The first day, the RPI exceptionally was 2.7$.

Happy to take the higher figure!

No you need to take the exact number, which is 0.33$ for 25/day.

It makes the argument I am making about the improbability of max downloads even more convincing.  Doesn't it?

There are very little downloads on weekend and holidays so you end up with 20 days per month.
249$ (25/day subscription) / 20 = 12.45$ per working day / 0.36 (0.33$+0.03 for referals) = 34.6 images > 25 allowed.
On maximum download, the profit for SS is still 9 images.
So you see that SS plays it safe and assumes that the subscribers will almost exhaust their quorum of 25 and they set their price accordingly.
In other words, your assumption that SS would break down on full usage of the quorum isn't correct. It's certainly not 25/day, but it's also certainly not 10 per month as you hope.

The bottomline is that Vivozoom is a subscription site and that it has to play on the safe side too. When I calculate at this very moment, my average return per download (over all categories) on SS is 0.65$ because of the OnDemand and Extended. That can vary from day to day and from month to month but the lowest it can go is 0.33$ of course.

The question that keeps being avoided here is what price we will get for a download on Vivozoom. And a second question is whether Vivozoom also will have Extended etc... to ease the pain of subscription. To put these numbers in context, my port on SS = N = 727 mostly nature. Real stock shooters will have a higher volume of sales per image, and illustrators even higher.

Basically, if you think that by reading on the SS page that we just get 0.25$, you are wrong. It's more like 0.60 in real life. If you then offer 0.65$ per download on average, Vivizoom isn't such a good deal compared to SS after all.

Hoping these real life numbers help your homework  :P

Cutcaster / Re: Sales at CutCaster
« on: February 20, 2009, 01:44 »
Business is booming.

I hope it won't be like Mostphotos, YAY and Zymmetrical. The first months those sites sell well. Then when they hurrayhs go all over the forums and the blogs, the crowd and the volume uploaders get in and the site dies for the first mice, as the number of buyers doesn't catch up at the same pace.
