The boss is Leon and I'm Hugo. ;-) He knows me quite well.

Thanks, I just sent him a mail - I'll keep you informed!

You could ask the guy than runs marquisemodels.eu. He's a friend and he told me they were insured for that. But he's not in the least interested in microstock when he saw what it pays. They're doing assignments exclusively and their models are 2-300 euro/day.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll contact that agency.  If I tell them I got their website as a tip by FD-amateur, will they know who you are?  (if not, could you send me your real name?).

General Stock Discussion / Re: Insurance?
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:18 »
My Belgian liability insurance also covers problems during a shoot : I explicitly went for 2 policies :  one for personal stupidities (knocking over a crystal vase in a museum), and one for professional accidents (a model trips over a cable in my studio).
I'm not worried about these accidents :  I only work with Belgian models - they don't sue so fast as in the US.
Copyright infringement is another thing, and I haven't found a solution yet.

I only have insurance for liability cases during shoots, but not for copyright infringement problems.  Why?  Simply because I cannot find such a policy here in Belgium (and neither can my insurance broker).  It does exist for other professions, like architects, but not for photographers.
I have been seriously thinking about taking a foreign insurance, but what in case of a "legal case" if you live in Belgium, have a UK policy, and a USA company sues you for copyright infringement ???

Bravo BigStockPhoto !
I just got an e-mail that BigStock deleted my photo, only 3 hours after my request.  Thank you BigStock for not sticking to the rules and forcing me to wait 3 months!

807
Good idea, I'll do that on BigStockPhoto!

As for Dreamstime :  I just started disabling the SR-EL licenses there, but then I changed my mind :  instead, I'm putting VERY high prices on my best sellers (like 3000 to 4000 dollars).  If there's any one crazy enough to be willing to pay amounts like that for a single file, I'm not going to stop them  ;D

808
Well, the way the DT e-mail is written, means that they suppose the image is on other sites and can be deleted.
This morning, I deleted it on all sites, without a problem.  For Rodeo and Bigstock I sent a delete-request.  I know they can take longer than 72 hours to delete the file, but one look at the photo (see below) will tell you there's not much chance it will sell in the first 3 months to come :  it's a VERY typical November/Halloween image.

Still, I don't like the fact that this could happen to my bestseller(s), so I will be disabling the SR-EL for my top-50 sellers.

Dreamstime.com / SR-EL sale : please remove Photo from all sites?!
« on: December 23, 2009, 02:11 »
I just had an e-mail from Dreamstime :
Dear Anyka, This is an automated notification informing you that one of your files has been sold under the SR-EL license. The image ID is: 10713614 http://www.dreamstime.com/disabled.php?imageid=10713614 Note that you have maximum 72 hours for removing this image from all mediums that you may have it available for sale. This includes but is not limited to: stock agencies, personal websites, exhibitions. The file has already been disabled from our site. Congratulations!

My first reaction was WOW!!  Great!!
I consider this photo of one of my best of a particular shoot, but it is definitely not a bestseller.  The sale was for 300 $, so 150 $ for me.  Nice.

Then I thought :  what if they did this to one of my REAL bestsellers???  Can Dreamstime just tell me to take it off all other sites?
In that case, shouldn't we disable the possibility of SR-EL sales for all of our bestsellers?

General Stock Discussion / Re: 2010 Microstock goals
« on: December 22, 2009, 12:36 »
- 30% growth of uploads, 20% growth of income (or more)
- get my boss to say YES to my request for a part-time job
- be more creative with lighting, especially on location
- have a GREAT photography holiday in France, and may-be another one in Greece
- be proved right in my dispute with Belgian social security (with regard to selling photos) without legal steps
- do less boring shoots, and more fun and creative stuff.
- at the end of 2010 :  buy the perfect photoshop-computer.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Artifacts at full size rejections at iStock
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:55 »
I understand noise.  But when Istock refuses images for "artifacts", it's nearly always for images without large spaces like skies, but with animals in it, furry animals.  They often reject for artifacts and give me "the problem" piece enlarged, so I can see which part of the photo is the problem.  And it's always a part of the animal's fur.

Suprised sales is better than uploads at DS - I'm not doing so well there lately compared to other sites.

General Stock Discussion / Re: November 2009 Earnings
« on: December 01, 2009, 11:41 »
BME on all sites (some only by 1%) except on BigStock.  Bigstock is going down every month.
Shutterstock only had a BME because of the OD's - so let's hope they keep the OD's on that site.
Fotolia beat Istock again this month, but narrowly.
My order :  SH - FT - ISP - DT - StXP - BIGS - 123rf.

They may be more European, but they're certainly not greater than most posters on this forum.  My approval percentage may be great, but unfortunately approval % and RPI are different things   :(

Adobe Stock / Re: I am so sick of Fotolia rejects..
« on: November 14, 2009, 02:27 »
I'm always amazed when reading these fotolia-rejection posts, since my acceptance ratio there is (and has always been) 90%.  Do I have a secret?  May-be, but I don't know which one it would be.  So here's my uploading "technique" :  my uploads are 20 to 25 images per week, uploaded during the weekend, and ALWAYS in a complete variety of subjects.  NEVER more than 2 images of the same shoot.  About 15% has people in it, not because FT doesn't like people, but because I don't have that many people shots.
I don't read my rejection reasons, but after a look at my collection of FT rejects, I can say that they're mainly :  backgrounds, graphics, infrared images, landscapes and flowers, and darker images.  In all other cases, the images were also rejected by other sites, so they must've been really bad.  Oh, and one other thing :  Fotolia does not like sad or distressing images (about war, death, suicide ... unless it's a halloween picture).
Also :  all images are keyworded the Fotolia-way, so with the 7 main keywords at front.
Last remark :  my absolute rank = 138, my relative rank = 99.
Now you tell me :  where's the secret?  Certainly NOT the image quality, which is definitely not superior to the forum members with lots of rejects.  Subject matter?  I live in Europe, which influences subject matter of course and Fotolia's origin is European.
Also :  Fotolia is my second best seller.  I have sent requests to FT about changing the EL value of ALL my images (I did that twice in a year), and they reacted positively whithin 4 days.  So Fotolia likes me, and I like Fotolia.
Do I have a secret?  Tell me which one!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy revenues down 30%
« on: November 05, 2009, 09:47 »
Thanks for telling us about the re-keywording.  My CTR was (has always been) 10 to 20% below average CTR.  A few months ago I re-keyworded all photos (I had about 400 then), with no CTR improvement.  Reading your post I now realize my re-keywording was not drastic enough to have any result.
On the other hand, Alamy keeps saying that CTR and "Alamy Rank" is not the same thing.  CTR is only PART of Alamy rank.  No idea what the other parts are though.

Hi there  - with very tight editing of my portfolio, my CTR averages over 2.5. This helped lead to $600+ sales last month - best for a while. Without the editing, I'd have been sunk.

Alamy results do seem similar to the rest of the maco world - my own agency included.

2,5 CTR .... WOW !!!!   Congratulations!!
What do you mean with "editing" :  cleaning up keywords?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy revenues down 30%
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:13 »
I am not surprised :  not just my own CTR, but also average (general) CTR has been down these last two months.  It used to be above 1,10 and it has been below 1 for more than two months now.  (right now it's 0,80).  Low CTR means (amongst others) less views by customers ...

Great month.  Fotolia broke all records and pushed IS off its 2nd place.  Now it's Shutterstock, Fotolia, Istock, and Dreamstime slowing down more and more.

No idea what's wrong with Dreamstime.  I started with Fotolia and Dreamstime on the same day, and after 2,5 years I have the same number of images with both sites.  Fotolia however beats Dreamstime's sales with more than 50% every month.

Shutterstock wasn't bad, but it stopped growing.  If the On Demands really stop in November, Fotolia can try and grab first place!
Bigstock did so bad, it's not even worth talking about.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Wow!
« on: October 10, 2009, 00:41 »
DT takes an average of 1 week with my images.  FT however managed to review the first images of a 20-image-batch BEFORE I finished submitting the last one.  And 10 minutes later all 20 were reviewed and approved.  This was the third week they managed to do this, so it wasn't a coincidence.

Shutterstock.com / Re: What do you disagree about SS??
« on: October 07, 2009, 23:53 »
I never had a problem with the low earnings at SS, simply because I always believed that their buyers buy more images than they really need.  Suppose you are an image buyer, and you can download 25 images per day, but you only need 15 per day.  What do you do?  You download more than you need, so you can choose afterwards which image looks better on your magazine/site.  Or you download the 15 you need, and you download 10 other ones for personal use at home ...
What I'm trying to say is that every 25ct at SS gets more money because of extra images that would not have been downloaded at agencies without subscriptions.

What I DO have a problem with at SS is the long period between approval and "publication on the site".  Last week, I uploaded and submitted 20 images on Thursday morning.  They were approved on Saturday morning.  Sunday, Monday and Tuesday there did not appear at searches ("newest first" order).  On Wednesday, all images from the last 4 or 5 days were put on the site in ONE BIG BATCH, and mine were buried on page 8.  Result :  no sales of newest images.

General Stock Discussion / Re: September 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: October 01, 2009, 12:42 »
September was 16% better than August, but that was EASY, considering August was my worst month of the year.
Fotolia did great and got very close to Istock's second place.  Shutterstock - still number one - had a low number of downloads, but the On-Demands and enhanced licenses saved the month.
Dreamstime - what's wrong with Dreamstime???  Same number of images as Fotolia, and doing only half the sales for two months now ...

Software - General / Re: What is the best IPTC these days?
« on: September 27, 2009, 01:02 »
I use CS4 until Lightroom makes a new version that does NOT put my keywords in alfabetical order.  Lightroom is perfect for caption and description, but Fotolia (and Alamy in a certain way too) wants the first 7 keywords to be the most significant ones.

May be not only the career of the one who faked the MR.
If just a few cases are found out ... how will buyers react?
