Newbie Discussion / Re: Expectations?
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:39 »
Crap.  I used to be better at this. ;)

You just need to start earlier. Maybe, start speaking at elementary schools to discourage your future competitors.

Or a pre-natal tape.  With Bach in the bachground.

Maybe a TV advertising series
Why would you slave away for 80 hours a week trying to sell photos for 25 cents when you could buy a saw and  make money in your spare time building houses ?
or buy a shovel and mine diamonds ?
or buy a net and catch unicorns, lepricons and rainbows

Photo Critique / Re: Tell me what's wrong with this photo
« on: July 30, 2010, 20:42 »
To me the main subject of this shot should be the horse and there is a fence blocking it.

Either step forward and exclude the fence or if you could get some height (a ladder, climb on your car a tree) then you could include the fence have a clear view of the horse and the barn in the background. Also you would have a different angle to the other picture of a horse in a field photos.

Off Topic / Re: Do you have a life away from microstock

80 hours per week ????

More during the summer.  I'm on a 5 hour sleep schedule right now and sometimes I get so involved I forget to sleep (I was working on some new animations and illustrations and totally lost track of time, ended up sitting at my computer for 26 hours straight, except for bathroom trips).  My daughter's schedule is less hectic this summer and I'm spending a lot of time with her teaching her about photography and story telling.  It lets me spend time with her and get work done at the same time.  ;D

So your spending time on other than microstock, I assumed that you were spending 80 hours on microstock alone, I just looked at you Istock port and there was 9 photos or something. Not trying to be rude or anything but it seemed you didn't have very much online for 80 hour weeks.

Since being laid off over a year ago, MicroStock has become my full time job and then some (I spend about 80 hours a week on it).  But life does rear its ugly head and intrude on my work time...

My daughter is in her school band, she takes piano lessons and voice lessons, and she's in girl scouts (my wife is the scout leader), so she takes up a lot of my time (thankfully).  My wife works for a local radio station so we get free tickets to stuff all the time (went to a hockey game last night, going to a basketball game tomorrow night, concert next week, etc.).  I used to say no whenever she'd ask me to do all this stuff, but now I say yes most of the time.  Partially because it forces me to take a break from my "work" and mostly because I'm learning to enjoy the time spent with my family (recovering work-a-holic).

80 hours per week ????

General Photography Discussion / Re: Sounds Like A Scam
« on: July 22, 2010, 05:32 »
another variation of this scam is buying cars or other big ticket items.

They say they will buy your car and say that they have sent you the money and some extra for some agent. They say you have to forward the extra on to the "agent" via western union.

They then send you an email saying that paypal won't release the funds they have sent to you until you give them the reference number for a western union transfer.

As I've said before, you can sell the same image RM and RF.  All RM refers to is selling a set of rights to use the image.  Exclusivity and image history can add value to the RM license but are not technically a requirement.  Heck, you can write and license requirements you want to.

I think your post slipped my eyes before.

While I understand that I can write any usage terms myself stating things that would anybody go haywire I'm surprised to see this kind of statement.

I can hardly believe that your RM Getty images are offered elsewhere not to mention as Micro RF at some Indonesian local microstock agency that isn't indexed by Google, with a different pseudonym and some conspiratorial exclsuvion from Tineye as well.

I think the point is that it comes down to agency rules. I'm sure like you say Getty would have a problem, other agencies might not.
You would have to check with each agency to find out.

Isn't it that any RM collection/agency will drop a contributor like a hot potato if they found out you sold the same stuff as RF (micro/macro) at the same time you have it with them for RM?

If not, feel free to PM me with a list of Macro agencies that tolerate such "business strategies".

General Stock Discussion / Re: How cheap can you get!!??
« on: July 16, 2010, 06:14 »
hey when I was at uni/college I didn't have any money to buy photos, I had to spend all my money on beer.

same for me - but beer wasn't free, why should photos?

I wasn't saying photos should be free, I was just saying I had different priorities. :)

Crestock.com / Re: Crestock - new owner?
« on: July 06, 2010, 06:22 »
I think this sums it up for me why I don't submit to Crestock.

One of the highest sellers in Microstock averages 1.36 sales per photo

Yuri_Arcurs
Denmark
Images approved: 25921
Images sold: 35252

I don't know what the average RPD at Crestock is , $0.50 ?
for my portfolio which is smaller in size and saleability it doesn't look like it would be worth uploading there.

That coupled with Crestock previous history of random rejections, slow review and worst slow payments the new owners will need to come up with something special to get me interested.

I think Randy's just thrown a bait out for you all to bite at.

if you can consistently return 7000% on investment of capital then you should be retired by now. (and also the richest person in the world)

I think your just saying that your earning a good effective hourly rate for you work and you keep your overheads low. Both good things. Your business model is probably quite profitable for you and without some of the risks that some of the high end producers are taking.

Add $200 per hour for your own time onto the equation an you will soon see that 25% ROI is pretty good.

% returns calculations aren't really useful unless your comparing exactly the same business model.

* looks like I took the bait aswell. :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: June Stats Anyone?
« on: July 01, 2010, 16:19 »
I actually had a good month. Shutterstock and Istock went well, dreamstime and fotolia were down.

I was most disappointed with dreamstime though, they appeared to fall off the end of the world for me. -54% on last month.

Overall income was up 20% from June 2009, though my portfolio is about 20% larger than last June.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Another mill on istock
« on: July 01, 2010, 06:33 »
As Istock is about 4 million behind shutterstock there isn't much point crowing about pure numbers. Maybe at 10 million.
I'd imagine that they would rather quote "5 million exclusive images"  when they get there.

Shutterstock.com / Re: should I give up on SS next?
« on: July 01, 2010, 03:46 »
I think you would have to have a very specific and well known "brand" / style to be worried about people not buying your photos on other agencies because they can get them for "cheap" at shutterstock.

Sounds like exclusivity at Istock might be the best option for you. To be independent I think you need to submit to atleast the top 6 to make it worth wild.

Adobe Stock / fotolia contributor survey
« on: June 28, 2010, 06:01 »
just got an email to do a survey at Fotolia.

Here's your big chance to let them have it.
My comments were stop changing goal posts and reducing % royalties.

Newbie Discussion / Re: What stock topic to shoot in studio?
« on: June 26, 2010, 22:55 »
gold fish and take some headphones for the call centre shots.

The list could be endless, but the main point is to come up with a plan beforehand on paper so you can look at it and check off as you go.

June has been okay for me about 20% higher than last junes earnings. I have increased my portfolio by 20% in the last year. geeze I thought I'd put more effort in than that. But atleast it wasn't add 20% to stay steady or go backwards.
