That sucks. Is that typical?

but that's just not true -- SYM works right out of the box - you can install and have a working site in a very short time without doing ANY programming or coding.  You need some computer savvy (eg, ftp and installing software, but sym requires no programming or even CSS].   whether a particular photographer likes it or not is a design & aesthetics concern but is not a problem with symbiostock.  and even for design there are a number of simple solutions available.

This makes me laugh a little bit because I found all the Wordpress back end stuff much more confusing than CSS and html. But, all of it wasn't too bad. I did manage to get it all straightened out over the weekend. There is a lot of great info/resources out there for setting it up, but it seems to be spread out in several different locations.

It would be nice if it was a little more out of the box ready. It seems like there are a lot of pages to add (even without the text/info) and boxes to check and uncheck, but I suppose nothing is fully plug and play.

I saw this and turned them off after the first response. However my e-mail is still blowing up and I am getting one every time someone responds to this thread. Maybe I will just have to deal with it for this thread and it will stop with any new ones.

The email has an unsubscribe link. That seemed to work.

I'm not noticing anything different.

OK. Now, I just got one of those auto-notifications. Teaches me to open my big mouth.

Yes, we get at least 50% less RPI.
That's how sales work.  They are trying to get more volume, attract new buyers, or bring back ones that left.  The idea is to make more money overall than you would without it, hopefully it works.

I don't remember the manufacturer agreeing to the discounted price for the sales team.  ;)
Then they can probably get out of the contract immediately.

I fired those sales reps awhile ago. They were starting to lose their touch and living off old accomplishments.  ;D

Glad you got it fixed.

834
Not sure. You are welcome to send the file to me at [email protected]. I'll take a look at it.

Is everything unlocked? Object > Unlock all.

I like how the celebration for an artist milestone results in a discount for the buyers.  ::)

I'd be for that as well. I think the idea of keeping it separate is good too.

Symbiostock - Development Area / Re: Licensing Must be Addressed
« on: November 18, 2013, 15:09 »
I'm not sure if there has been any need at all for upgrading to keep consistent with Wordpress. If there ever was that need I have no doubt that the 150 plus members of the network would figure out a way to pool resources to get the job done.

I think that would be where some of the security concerns come into play. Not that there aren't security concerns for any website on any platform. Just one of those things to think about. Plan for the future and all that... which I assume was the purpose of this thread. To get another mushroom doctor or two on the scene. Just in case the mushroom gets sick.  ;)

Not so much... I now have a working website that sells which I can hire my own programmer to update if I need to. There would need to be some serious changes to wordpress before this is ever an issue. At that point I would consider it a cost of doing business which is far less expensive than paying someone to build me a custom platform. Furthermore I can network with a few other site owners to offset the cost of the upgrades. This is not a security risk unless you feel like you are entitled to free software which should be maintained at no cost to you for as long as you want. If you feel that way then yes... you are probably viewing this as a potential problem. I see symbio as an almost free platform for selling my images which I can do with whatever I please for as long as I want to support it. I am grateful for what has been done up to now and if I want more I can go out and pay someone to do it for me. Maybe if my custom upgrade is useful enough I can sell it to others for a reasonable price and recoup my expenses.

I guess it would depend on the frequency of having to hire somebody. If it is only every few years, then maybe not a big deal. If it is every couple months, then it starts to become a problem. I'm not sure how often Leo makes updates now or how often things need to be updated. I was thinking that I'd create a Symbio site in the next few months or so, but I assume that it will require more maintenance than my KTools site by virtue of it being linked to Wordpress.

They can take my royalty percentages, but they can't take my emoticons!

Hi there,

I am a founder of PhotoDeck and this thread was brought to our attention by a member. Thank you for your interest in our service!

To answer a question raised above: we don't actively promote our members' websites / content. Being direct and honest is very important to us, so I thought I'd start with that.

We focus on what we do best, which is providing the best possible websites to professional shooters who (we assume) know how to run their business. Web hosting and stock selling require very different skillsets, and I don't know of any company who can honnestly tell they're good at both. That's also why we don't take a commission on sales, that wouldn't be fair in our view.

Asmai has a strategy to get buyers on her site, that's the first important thing. The second is making sure that the buyers that end up on your site are happy with what they see: both content and experience. We can certainly help (a lot) with #2, but not with #1.

I'll check the thread again tomorrow ;)

I know you guys didn't do vectors when you first launched. Was that still not an option and/or was it in the works? Just curious.

845
I think that the poll results should be divided in different categories: photo, vector, video, audio, etc. it could be more reliable.

There probably wouldn't be enough votes for vector or video unless it was set below 50. It would be interesting to see though.

I recently joined Pond5 and don't have any sales yet. My portfolio is kind of small because of them not having IPTC. I would say they aren't comparable so far, but I'll see how it goes.

846
I capped it at $2500 so that those who are simply interested in spamming the results (with bogus high numbers) have minimal effect...

I get that, but wouldn't spam be an issue regardless of what the cap is? Right now people can still wildly exaggerate earnings. Someone making $100 can still vote for $2500 if they want to. I'm sure it happens, to the number for SS (or whatever someone's favorite site is regardless of actual earnings) is always going to be artificially inflated.

No doubt that's partially what we're seeing with self-hosted, because the current number just doesn't make any sense to me. Same for istock, exclusive and not. I suspect some people vote high on the exclusive option and low on the non-exclusive side based purely on how they feel about the company.

I think the point of the cap is so a few people can't wildly skew the average of the majority that vote accurately. At least, I assume the majority of people vote accurately. Without the cap though, their vote could affect it a lot more. I suppose you could post the median or mode as well, but that probably gets too messy.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: What's your returns/refunds policy?
« on: November 06, 2013, 20:49 »
No refunds, but there are definitely exceptions. Upgrading to an extended license or more expensive product, double purchases and things like that would qualify. I just state no refunds though to keep it simple.

848
Is Sean Mikey from Life cereal now?  ;D

There was a pretty long thread about this if you are interested:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/selling-direct/self-hosted-at-14-6-top-5/

Oh, and in answer to the question... I'd say, yes. I think it is accurate. You can rack up some pretty high dollar sales from selling direct.

General Stock Discussion / Re: October Earnings
« on: November 05, 2013, 16:33 »
Do Zazzle, FAA, or Cafepress license stock photos?  I know FAA doesn't so it seems those shouldn't be counted in the monthly earnings thread.

I guess I count it all as passive income, although it is not always so passive. So, Zazzle and anything else that isn't contract work gets counted. I do split out my referral earnings from the agency earnings though. Since, those shouldn't count towards RPD, RPI, etc.
