I was just about to buy and install, but Symbiostock.com has disappeared - all I get is a Bluehost landing pages with some adverts on it?

I was thinking the same thing. This month was OK (but not great) but the last week has been very slow:

Downloads are perhaps down a bit compared to last week, but earnings are quite a bit down. Not a very large sample size, but the loss of the Photo+ collection seems to have hit me.

Changing the subject back to the original topic....

Does anyone know people in the National Association of Photoshop Professionals - the producer of that glossy magazine Photoshop User? They often use stock photos in their various articles and tutorials (from Fotolia and iStock normally). If we could both get them interested in using Symbiostock for their example files (give them for free) and do an article about us - that would give a lot of visibility to the design community.

I'll volunteer to write the article (and I could just send it to the editor (Scott Kelby), I guess...)

I used to use Lightburner, but the new pricing is too complex (and too much) for me, so I moved to one upload using Filezilla and going site by site uploading files. Works OK for me, as I have a very fast internet and I get two files uploaded in parallel at about 2Mbit/s each. Then I read these posts and decided to try StockUploader. Installed fine, I put my 18 sites into the config pages and tested - all good. However, when I use it, it uploads one image at a time, and only gets 100 - 200Kbit/s upload speed. A file that takes 4-6 seconds on Filezilla takes 1-2 minutes on Stockuploader.

Anyone know why that should be? I left a post on their forum, but no responses so far. Is there a speed restriction setting in Stockuploader?

Hi Makeanotherme

What sort of videos are selling for you?

Steve

I would have said the same a month ago, but suddenly I have sold 3 clips between May and June, for a total of 46,69 dollars... Finger crossed and let's hope it continues...

Just to make sure i'm following - is this $46 on 123RF for video? Not this new site that only the OP seems to have had success with?

Any chance you can explain how to do this? Starting from when you say images.csv, where does one find that? You say in your post above "upload your images.csv file". Can you explain exactly how to do that?

I'm still struggling a bit with this - but I think it is the searching on the site, not the uploading. To upload your images, go to the section on the landing page of the cascoly site called "For SYmbiostock Members" and choose add your images. Simply enter the URL for the home page of your stock site, and click update image database. A new screen will show all the new images being found and added to the database.

This is where I then have issues, and perhaps you are finding the same. If I search for certain of my images by using one of their keywords in the "Network Images" box, it is still hit and miss for me. Some images are found - "cicada" picks up some new images uploaded a day or two back. However, searching for "bengal" or "kitten" comes up with nothing from my site. However, the same words in the search keywords box finds the right images on my site.

So, I suspect there is something in searching by keywords that isn't finding everything yet?

Symbiostock - SEO & Marketing / Re: Drop in traffic.
« on: June 13, 2013, 13:39 »
This may or may not be related - but this post made me go and check my google webmaster stats. I found that I had gone from a handful of page not found to 1000 on 5/8/2013 and it has stayed at that level ever since. The top problem pages are listed below. I've no idea what I did back on 5/8 - a new release perhaps? Anyone know what the cause of all these errors is, and would that cause Google to downgrade my site?

I've been trying to add sites to the database at http://cascoly.com/symbio/symbiostock-network.asp but for many sites I get only 25 images from the images.csv

Steve, I was adding more images yesterday to my site and so I thought I would try to add my full images and keywords to this database. I updated the csv on my site, then used your image and then keyword upload process. All seemed to work fine and 370 images were found in the image upload and a whole lot of keywords in the second run.

When I search for any of my images in "Symbiostock Network Images", nothing comes up for my keywords, but if I search in the "Network Keywords" box, I do see my keywords and those link nicely back to my site.

The example I was using was "bengal" - it finds 12 uses of the keyword bengal in my site, but nothing in the images. Am I using this the wrong way?

Again, sorry if I have missed the discussion on this in the various threads....

What did we decide to do about the in-site search? The issue that if I add the phrase "new york" in my keywords, it isn't found by searching the words "new york", or "york". The only way I think it can be found from within the site search is by including the separate keywords "new" and "york" but that they throws up incorrect search results because the images aren't of "York"!!

Google searches these things OK, so external searches will find the right images, but it makes the site seem very unresponsive once you are actually there.

Newbie Discussion / Re: White Reflective Surface
« on: June 11, 2013, 15:07 »
Paper most likely although it can be anything light colored, such as white cloth. The trick is to light it separately with flash so that it is just overexposed and so appears pure white on the image.

Steve

Edit: I forgot that I had written an article about it: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/02/isolating-a-subject-against-white-background/

This whole discussion brings me back to something I tried to explain a while back. We all know that we can't sell a file on Alamy as RM if that file is RF on another site. RM is just a different sort of licence (yes, with different prices for usage, but that is up to the seller/agency to set up those terms). If we have the Symbio sites selling fair trade licenses that have some sort of expiry, then they are no longer RF and so we could logically (and legally?) sell the same image as RM on Alamy and as FT on our own sites.

Yes?

Thats a lot of work, I dont think I want to do that. Changing 800+ titles is too much.

Just a comment from someone who is changing all the descriptions and adding "bold" highlights on the key concepts in the title. It is a lot of work (and I'm only at 340 images so far on the new site), but this is the ONLY way that a buyer will find you (in my view) - hence the work involved in getting a well keyworded and described image is critical to making a success. Otherwise it becomes a vanity site that only you go to.

Isn't the idea of this to get the max leads from Google to our sites?

Steve

864
Great - thats all I need to know. I'll set to work to reprocess mine before I go any further with new ones.

Steve

865
Some great updates here - thanks!

However, I'm not sure I know the answer to the original question though - did the people who had a fair number of images online when the system moved to ImageMagic go back and reprocess the original uploads - is there is specific benefit in doing that?

Steve

866
Thanks Cathy for the link to the other thread.

A question for those with large numbers of files on your sites - when Imagemagic was introduced, did you go back and reprocess all existing files?

I saw a mention of white lines in an isolated image - was that resolved? I don't want to spoil a working site for some potential benefits.

Steve

867
OK - thanks! I found that I was still using GD, and so I added the line to my php.ini and now I am using ImageMagic.

So, on to the second question: Is it worth (or is it important to) reprocess all my existing images through ImageMagic? Assuming of course that it can be done without losing all my keywording and Google Image positions in search?

Steve

868
I'm still trying to get myself up to date, but there is one area I'm confused about - Imagemagick.

I remember the earlier discussions around version 1.3 or so that Imagemagick was a much better solution for image processing. There was this comment from Bluehost support:

Quote
Hi,

To enable imagick you would just need to add the following line of code anywhere in your php.ini file(s):

extension=imagick.so

Good luck.

I then see references to issues with the processing, timeouts etc. and that we should wait until version 2 to fully resolve the issues.

So, my question: Now that we have a stable version 2 release, is Imagemagick used by default, or do I still need to add the line into my php.ini to make it work? Then, should I be reprocessing all the images I have already uploaded and are live on my site, or are most of you just taking those as they are and simply processing the ones that are uploaded from now onwards?

Anything else I should know about Imagemagick?

General Stock Discussion / May Sales
« on: June 01, 2013, 08:19 »
Surely I'm not the first to publish this month - sorry if I have missed the main thread.

May was good, but not great for me. Although I had a record breaking month on SS (breaking $1000 to end at $1004), the others were a bit so-so. I noticed a big increase in PP for IS (which I put back into April because that is the way I do it - there must have been the equivalent of an ED on their partners somewhere. iStock was OK - and I got a lot more files online now that I can upload 999 a week.

I will work on my graphs and update this page a little later today.

Overall, earnings ended at $2045 compared to $2245 last month.

Steve

Update: Overall growth graph:

Earnings per site:

The discussion about the earnings per download and the earnings per online file at Shutterstock is continued in more detail on my blog post about earnings: http://www.backyardsilver.com/2013/06/earnings-from-sale-of-stock-photos-online-in-may-2013/ but the graph is above. What I find encouraging is that the dollars per download continues to rise, but, more importantly, even though I have doubled the images I have for sale on Shutterstock in the past 2 years, my income per online image has stayed constant - ie more photos for sale = more money (as long as you don't let the quality slip!)

870
Gillian

Keep at it - that is the only secret I know.

I just produced a graph that I will post a bit later today that plots the number of online files on SS against the earnings per online file. The number has grown over the past 2 years (more than doubled the number of files for sale), and the great news is that the earnings per online file has stayed static - maybe even gone up a bit. It was $0.25 in May, but is normally around $0.22.

What all that means (for my sort of portfolio at least) is that my income is almost directly proportional to the number of images I have available for sale - take more pictures (of the same quality) and you get more money.

Photography Equipment / Re: Monopod advice
« on: June 01, 2013, 08:12 »
Gillian

I bought a monopod about 2 years ago, and I don't think I have used it once (perhaps I should sell it!!)

I always try to take my tripod with me - I find that I want to use a tripod when the light is getting low (or for some night time cityscape shots or HDR images) and the monopod is useless for that. I have a little carbon fiber one with 4 sections which I take when space and weight are really important and a more sturdy 3 section tripod that I take when I am hiring a car and can just put the tripod in the back.

3900 images and video clips (maybe 100 video clips). You can see the popular images here: http://www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?gallery_id=138433

I try to take a variety of styles - and try to re-use images if I can. I remember that post some time ago about someone who added a wooden deck in front of other people's landscapes - sometimes with a cup of coffee on it. I've done some of those (although only using my own images!). The surfboards that appear 3 times on the popular page are another example - one shot turned into 5 saleable variations.

SS is normally 45% - 50% of monthly income - I'll calculate that tonight for May.

As a matter of interest Steve. What percentage of your sales are your monthly running costs? Model / studio hire etc. I am very impressed with what you have achieved in a short amount of time!

Pretty much zero. My best seller on Shutterstock is a picture of our bengal cat, and she poses for peanuts. Then I have travel images, and although this last year I have specifically flown to places just to take photos, most of my travel is related to either vacations or work related travel (I'm a consultant in International telecoms in my spare time...).

Then I do take pictures of myself in various poses (all clothed) and still life/macro. Whatever catches my eye or interest.

Steve

874
Yes, I know this is really only interesting to me, but today I passed the $1000 mark for monthly sales on Shutterstock - my first month earning over $1000 with them. What is also interesting (I think) is that I'm within one month now of achieving lifetime earnings of $20,000 with them. It took me 4.5 years, from early 2008 to June 2012, to earn the first $10,000 and just 12 months to earn the next $10,000. Soon I will be getting $10K a month!

Anyone who is generous enough to list you - and who likes your cats!   Check out my site as well, AJT just beat me to it

Thanks!

My cats have had a great month - 2 EDs on Shutterstock as well as the ODs and lots of ordinary downloads! I need to add something more unique to my own site - they are too easy to find on the main agencies.
