1 per 350 DLs at SS is an EL

I assume this is the way it has always been - most agencies don't have reviewers on site do they?  It is the perfect job for working at home.  It is interesting that they want so many hours per week and with no mention of pay or benefits - I can't imagine it would be attractive to many people.  They also don't require you to be a contributor so they could take people with no understanding at all of the industry from the contributor's side.  OTOH, they won't be competitors with the people they are reviewing so I guess that is a plus.  Also strange that they don't mention training - I assume they would have some sort of extensive training but that is not mentioned.  The other test is just for internet speed - nothing on how good you are at determining image quality, etc.  I suppose if you really want to know more about it you can apply - might be easier hitting "Reject" a few thousand times a day than producing images, and of course it would tell you how to do better yourself as mentioned already.

« on: March 30, 2015, 08:48 »
I'm seeing the same.  This month I have had 0 DLs on 3 out of 4 Saturdays - the first time to get multiple 0-DL days in a couple of years.  DLs on all other days but often slow and overall DL numbers still about 15-20% lower than last year but RPDL getting higher every year.  Almost a BME this month due to some high-value sales.  Weird.  I guess it reflects more sales to corporate clients who don't work on the weekends than in the past?

Any of the Canon Digital Rebels are quite small and light.  The T5 only weighs about a pound without a lens but still had good image quality.  My girlfriend bought one specifically for travel because it is so small and light but still good enough for stock.

Canstock has been very strange.  It really dried up beginning around last July and Jan-Feb were abysmal.  I had no DLs there at all from Feb 18 - March 10, and I can't remember having such a large break with no DLs there ever.  Then all of a sudden the taps were turned on beginning March 11 and I have had more DLs there this month than any month in the past 5 years - about 3 times an average month in less than two weeks.  Almost all subs so $$$ is only about the average from last year but I will take it.  Either they have suddenly had a major marketing success or they had computer problems that delayed previous sales from reporting and these are all past sales just showing up at once.  I am hoping for the former but I suspect it is most likely a reporting issue - they probably hired some programmers from iStock.

When I first moved to Indiana there were train tracks through town and I couldn't believe the number of cars and people that were hit every year - almost always because they ignored the warnings and often drove around the barriers.  Incredibly stupid and they don't get a lot of sympathy.  They have since solved that problem by moving the tracks but it's too bad you have to spend millions of dollars to save people from their own stupidity.

What the others have said, and I will reiterate that their reviewing is bizarre with very high rejection rates of quality images that sell fine elsewhere

I wonder how much longer it will be before Canva gets a number in the poll at the right and where it will be.  I predict it will be during the next couple of months and that it will start out in the middle tier.

I don't think I'd make a choice of either city for stock options, and they are very different.  Charlotte is quite a nice city of a decent size with a lot of financial industries - banks and things are based there.  The airport is a hub for USAir so easy access to lots of other places.  It is not too far from the mountains and a bit of a drive but probably 2-3 hours to the coast.  It is in the Piedmont region so rolling hills and a lot of forests over red clay soils.  Not too far from a lot of other interesting southern towns.

Orlando of course is the place for Disney World, Epcot and all that kind of stuff.  Full of tourists and as trek said very flat.  It is an hour or so from the space center and the east coast, maybe a but farther to the west coast, but plenty of places to photograph in Florida, plus tons of birds and other wildlife hang out there in the winter.  It would be a bit of a drive to the Everglades but not too far.  Decent air connections with Disney but not as good as with Charlotte.  No snow and almost never frost in Orlando, but you would get some snow in Charlotte.  Plenty to photograph in either place, it just depends on what you like best.

I've taken photos in both states and own property in North Carolina so go there a few times a year.  Humidity is not such an issue EXCEPT if you take a camera straight from an air-conditioned house to outside - then you will have some serious fogging until the camera warms to the same temperature.  Let the camera equilibrate to the same temperature before taking off the lens cap and you will be OK.  Of course the same thing happens in winter if you go from outside to in.  The main problem I have in both states is salt spray and sand because I am usually at the coast - I always keep a filter over every lens and clean that when necessary.  It sounds like you won't have a problem with that with the cities you mentioned.

Hurricanes are not usually that big a deal unless you are right at the coast - the main damage is from the storm surge, buildings in the US are designed to take that kind of wind.  Of course if it is a category 5 then all bets are off.  The other problem is falling trees, so don't buy a house with big trees nearby if you are worried about hurricanes (not such a big issue in Florida).

There are tornadoes almost everywhere in the US including Charlotte.  Where I live now they have tornado sirens that they test the first Saturday of every month.  A lot of tornadoes have been nearby but they so far have not damaged my house - their damage is usually over a very small area so the chance of getting hit is low.  In Charlotte they are even less common so not worth worrying about.

Good luck!

Shutterstock.com / Re: unique phrases - keywords question
« on: March 14, 2015, 07:46 »
Interesting.  I always include keyword phrases on the idea that it might improve the search.  Following your example I just searched on clay pot (no quotations) and got 24,000 images of clay pots (or at least on the first page they were all relevant).  Then I searched on "clay pot" in quotations and got the same 24,000 images in the same order.  So it made no difference.  I guess bothering with phrases is a waste of time unless it helps at other agencies.  Thanks for pointing that out.

maybe they aren't telling because if they do it we can manipulate it by someway

Or because a competitor could copy it I think is more likely

I don't think so - some of the same files sell well at both, although it's hard to make a comparison because sales at BS are still quite low

I've had them a couple of times so they definitely happen - no idea how they are used, though.  I've also had some editorial SODs.  I figure it's up to the buyer to use them correctly so haven't worried about it.

Ouch.  At least she was only walking and not driving.  She would be eligible for a Darwin award if she had gotten herself killed.  It would be a shame if this is blamed on the railroad but you are probably right about that.

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS Sales Slow For a Week!
« on: March 11, 2015, 09:06 »
More or less normal (i.e., with large swings from day to day) over the last week except for the weekend which was dreadful - I had 0 DLs on Saturday which is very unusual even for a weekend.  So far this month DL numbers are good but the proportion of ODs, etc., is very low - one in every 15 DLs so far this month as opposed to one every 7 DLs last month.  No ELs, SODs or video sales so far this month either, whereas last month was great.  Hopefully that will change soon...

I had subs sales on the 28th but nothing else.

I'll trade my thoughts for one year of unlimited access to your articles.  ;D

LOL!

Yes, definitely hollyhock, Alcea rosea.  It's in the hibiscus family (Malvaceae).

If you want to sell RF definitely remove them - you don't want a farmer suing you for selling images of their property, which they could identify absolutely with the bar code.

Off Topic / Re: Legal: shooting photos in public places
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:55 »
I've been kicked off college campuses a couple of times while trying to get images for a request on DT.  I went over holidays because that is when I had time, they would not be crowded and I could park for free.  Security didn't like anyone wandering around there with a camera even though it was full daylight.  They checked my ID and told me to come back when school was in session - apparently it would have been fine when the students were there but not otherwise.

Nobody can tell you whether it is worth it for you - it depends on how your particular images will sell, which cannot be predicted.  If you want to find out, submit some and see what happens.

For me the main work is making the images and keywording, so my approach is to upload anywhere where you can make some money as long as they treat contributors reasonably.  From my experience. I would say every agency in the poll at the right from Canstock up is worth the small extra time for uploading (except maybe iS nowadays).  You will have to decide whether you like their policies yourself.

Based on how sales have been there recently I don't think upload problems are going to make any difference, unfortunately - it seems to be on life support just waiting for the end

And when you check the earnings page (you have to go through a captcha to get there) you will see that the subs I think are only 22 cents to start - it will be a while before you get to 25-cent subs there.
Subs go higher than 25c, I get 36c there.

Yes, but I think it's 22 cents to start so anyone new will be at that level for quite a while when starting out.  I don't think they should be supported at that level.
