One thing in favour of new, smaller agencies for sellers as well as for buyers, is that they accept images that are rejected by the big ones. The more restrictive the Big 6 get, the higher the quality of the "overflow".

As a buyer, I already see this, and I frequently find the photos I need on the most surprising places.

Cheapest in Thailand at the moment is THB 85,900, which is equal to EUR 1,867. The price includes Thai VAT, which is 7% (may be deductable when you export it), but I don't think the shop in question does mail order, at least not overseas.

On the other hand, if you combine it with a nice holiday to Thailand and get a cheap airline ticket. Just avoid the rainy season, which is now. November is fine  :)

There's another retailer that is a bit more reputable, and mentions specifically that you'll get a VAT refund, here:

123 without doubt. So much so that I would rather rate them among "The Big 7". Being a part of Inmagine doesn't hurt them either.

As microstock becomes a part of the "establishment", I think it will be increasingly difficult for newcomers without backing from major players in stock photography to attract customers. The exceptions will be agencies who serve particular niches or are connected to a certain geographical area or language, like ScanStockPhoto and StockPhotoMedia.

Here's some good news:

"SnapVillage does not enable IPTC metadata extraction at present. Well, were pleased to announce that this will be changing when we turn on support for IPTC metadata extraction."

Sounds logical, doesn't it?

The owner seems to be Mike Watson Images which again, according to this article:

http://www.stockphototalk.com/phototalk/2006/05/corbis_partners.html

is represented by Corbis.

Confused? Not after the next episode of "Stock", the never-ending image opera   :D

« on: July 17, 2007, 06:33 »
This is visibly untrue. Whilst there are some 'hooray henrys' there are also a great deal of active members that do not fit your characterisation, who are not banned or ignored and do a great deal to get things improved after each bodged iteration of some new feature.

If there's one thing worse than the rejections at IS, it must be their forums. If you don't know how to spell "Hallelujah", you're simply not welcome.

Yes and no. While some criticism is accepted, the moderators are very quick to close down threads that are not to their liking. But even worse is the tendency by some members to explain to IS-newcomers what the world really looks like. Unfortunately, their view on the world has been limited somewhat by their exclusive status at IS.

I agree. Easy uploading has become an important criteria. I want to invest my time in making better photos rather than handle awkward upload procedures.

Just so you know, photographers are not the only ones getting rejected on the basis of whether their submission tickles the inspector's fancy. Not surprised to see this stuff going on. It's about time really. Probably won't be visible too long since there are some non-koolaid-drinking participants.

123RF / Re: Images reviewed out of order?
« on: July 13, 2007, 04:33 »
I sometimes have the same thing happen with istock.  I think they allocate each uploaded batch to a different reviewer.  Most of them are quite quick but sometimes one of them will take a long time to get around to reviewing my photos.  So sometimes a batch is still waiting for review while newer uploads have been reviewed.

With IS, that is absolutely the case, and probably with some of the others as well. I don't think there's any reason to worry about it.

It hasn't been launched yet, this is a beta site.  I will only judge them when the proper site is launched.  I think it is a good idea to launch a beta site and let those without the patience to wait for the proper site be the guinea pigs.  Microsoft do that with their software.

I hope they have a proper watermark and a decent upload system by then.

The "normal" procedure with beta-testing (with a possible exception for Microsoft, who are usually not functional with a new product until Service Pack 2 or thereabout, but they have a monopoly, more or less), is to develop the product as far as it goes without the access to "real-life" situations, and then start the beta-testing phase.

That is clearly not the case here. CrapVillage lacks some very obvious, basic functions that anyone with experience from the microstock market would consider must-haves. Reading IPTC data is so basic and so important to the users, that not including it, even in a beta-version makes me wonder how much they understand about the supply side of microstock.

On the other hand, IS has dumped quite a few untested procedures upon us the last year as well, so maybe this is the new microstock culture? Do half the job and let the users figure out if it works or not.

Since the news are obviously spreading that they are online, people will try them to see what they are good for. Many of those users will conclude that they are online, but not functional, beta or not. In this very competitive world, you seldom get more than one chance to impress your customers. Since TrapVillage has already had media-coverage (NYT, no less), they have already played one of their strongest cards. Not smart.

I've just made my second attempt to upload to SnapVillage, and I'm rather surprised. Here we have one of the largest photo agencies in the world, owned by one of the richest men in the world, who also owns the biggest software company in the world, and they launch something that for all practical purposes is more or less useless.

My attempted upload ended with the message "DB Error: - Transaction (Process ID 67) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction." No IPTC data of course.

If starting a microstock agency was something new, like sending people to Mars, it would have been understandable, but there are newcomers in this market more or less every week, all of them with far less resources. Still, they all have more professional launches that SnapVillage.

In a way, I feel insulted, and I think we all should. Obviously, we don't have to upload to ScrapVillage if we don't want to, but using our time and resources for beta-testing that should have been finished months before they even considered uploading their site to the internet is at least ill-mannered.

On the other hand, this is the way I feel any time I use a computer that runs Windows, so maybe it's only me  ;D

They must be doing something right at Fotolia these days. I requested a payment from them six or seven hours ago, and the money has already arrived in my Moneybookers account. That must be some kind of world record. At least it made me smile  ;D

There are two "camps", those that worship Rider99

Ummm... I think it's Rinder. I agree that what causes this is the lenient moderators. The opposite is the case at the IS forums, where any criticism of anything, or a question that has been answered in another thread, will assure that the thread is locked without warning.

Still, SS is nothing compared to the forums at dpreview....

Good stuff  :)

Of course, I never shot with the wrong WB either ;D but I happen to know this guy who did 450 photos in one day, all blueish. How stupid can people be... Jeeze... No, no, not me... this other guy    ::)

« on: June 25, 2007, 23:51 »
It looks like somebody has hit the "panic-button" at Corbis. They seem to have included every feature they could think of. Any price, any keywording, any photo and the search function will come up with any photo as well.

Most of the new start-ups, with much less resources than these guys, have done a much better job creating a believable concept. A lot of things will have to change before this is a serious contender.

I worry about the keywording here. They need a lot of photos, and there's no way they can add quality keywords for all of them. On the other hand, as long as they don't read IPTC data (why on earth don't they do that?), there's no way that I will manually keyword all my photos either. Something needs to change.

Hmm,

I start to like this site, and one reason is the prices and second, in fact, you do not need to keyword your files, they do it for you! But you are allowed to.

In that case, it's very positive. I guess I should give it a try then  :)

"If you like, you can add titles, descriptions and searchable tags."

If I want? Ummmm.... From what I've heard, Corbis has never made a profit. Maybe this is why. And PayPal only? Maybe these guys should have done a tiny bit of research before they put this online. Even for a beta version, this is very, very primitive.

I did a search for "car", and all photos that have "car" as a part of one of the search words (like "carved" and "card") came up as well.

The only cameras where you can change sensor are medium and large format. The cheapest alternative so far is the Mamiya 645 AFD II with the Mamiya ZD digital back (22MP). The camera body costs $3000 and the ZD back $7000. Lenses are extra :D

Not exactly cheap, but around half the price of a Hasselblad or Rollei/Sinar/Leaf combination.

Many photographers are dreaming about upgradeable digital SLR's, or even better: digital backs for classic cameras like the Nikon FM3A. Unfortunately, it's very unlikely that something like that will appear. It's simply cheaper to mass-produce complete, new cameras. The cheapest ones, Nikon D40 and Pentax K100D are now below $400.

There was actually one DSLR with exchangeable back: The Leica R8 and R9 (same camera, but different electronics) could alternate between film and the DMR, a rather big as well as expensive digital back, and the DMR is now discontinued. You can still buy the R9 tough, but that's film only these days. Leica is expected to launch a new, all digital DSLR in the not too distant future.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Book Titles on the Spine
« on: June 18, 2007, 19:52 »
From a legal point of view, I don't know, but as a designer, I can tell you that I would never buy a photo of books with the title and/or the author blurred. A book without a title? That's a notebook to me. I would clone out the publisher though.
