General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy - is it worth it?
« on: August 28, 2019, 04:21 »
I find it weird that 'good discoverability/poor discoverability' of an image seems to be determined by number of keywords above 40.
It's not, that's just some insane thing someone thought up, but they aren't humble enough to say 'we made a mistake'.

902
I don't want to waste much time about it but I think it's rigged simply because it can be rigged and there are reasons why would they rig it, so I wouldn't count on corporate transparency and morals.
However there are things that probably fall out of rig calculations - asset quality and popularity of subjects which rigged or not contribute to randomness of contributor experience. Port size too, while it can be rigged I don't think they would fiddle with it much in a negative way.

Occam's Razor -- the SIMPLEST explanation for all sites yielding lower sales is supply outpacing demand

I'd agree but I'm talking about the way demand comes and goes and how it cycles between weeks of never sold assets and bestsellers.
Just because they are changing algorithms doesn't necessarily mean they're rigged (though on at least one occasion years ago iS did just that)

You see some of their artists that have very mediocre, almost instragram quality work.
Some instagram work is beyond excellent.

..
So I was wondering if essentially 'owning' your own site that was as easy as creating an account would be appealing.
always promised, never realized

I will give some thought to the marketing aspect though - just as I was writing this had an idea that might be appealing, going to think about it to see if it would work...

are you saying you HAVEN'T yet given  'some thought' to marketing!??! and you wonder why no one takes your proposal seriously .

The original question was with respect to setting up the site itself, nothing to do with marketing. As an aside though, something occurred to me that might work marketing wise as well.
Th e suceess of any venture in this arena is probably 95% marketing and 5% IT.
and 10% 24/7 support

An agency is an agency it should stand in front lof contriboutor
Don't know what SS does, but I read recently of a case when G paid off a claimant then claimed the money back from the contributor.
Looks like SS would likely do the same:
"j. upon making or learning of any claim that is inconsistent with any of the warranties or representations made by you, Shutterstock shall send you written notice of such claim, using the email address provided by you to Shutterstock, specifying the details of the claim as then known to Shutterstock. Pending the determination of such claim, Shutterstock may withhold from royalties and/or other compensation due to you hereunder, such sums as are reasonably related to the probable value of the claim as determined by Shutterstock. You will cooperate fully with Shutterstock in the defense of any such claims. You may participate in the defense of any claim through counsel of your selection at your own expense."
Though in the G case referred to, the contributor was not given the chance to defend the case, G went ahead and paid up then claimed the money back.

MicrostockSubmitter / Re: iStock ESP connection error
« on: August 23, 2019, 05:46 »
So is anyone successful in using StockSubmitter to submit to iStock? Did you get the keys?

No, the API keys are not available, as above.

For niche content sellers - do you know what ways they sell?
1. Directly to publications, often with accompanying written articles
2. In specialist macro agencies who are well trusted in the relevant markets.
... ?

Weve already done Symbiostock.  Didnt work.

a) Who says it doesn't work? (I've heard it mentioned here before from those who said it didn't work for them, never really looked at it. But I am sure there are some people it does work for).
                        ^^^^^^
What makes you "sure"? Did you mean, "I think it might work for some people" ?

Read all about it here:

Regarding selling myself short at $5 sub plan. Obviously that amount is silly, BUT unfortunately the entire industry is forever moving downwards in price. We all understand the only way to compete now is by price. There is no reason for a graphic designer to come to my site if it isnt a lot cheaper. Otherwise their time is better spent going to Shutterstock or wherever.
A lot then would depend on how wide, as well as deep your portfolio is. One day a designer who has a sub with you may need an image  you don't have, e.g. a subject or location you don't cover, then they'll go to SS / iS / Adobe  and they might decide to take their next sub out there for the breadth of cover. If your images are unique and in demand enough that their need for these images could not be satisficed by the big names, they might hold a little $5/month sub with you in parallel with their sub to a bigger site, otherwise although $5 is a tiny amount, why would they bother?

A couple of years ago there was a Finish/Swede,
Dane

that had over 400 thousand images online, he had a whole studio behind him and he pumped out images full of people all model released, I think he was called Yuri Acor. He had his images on every stock library.
He has a large team (over 100 in 2012, according to Wikipedia) of shooters, retouchers, support staff and lawyer/s based in South Africa. He started his own site, https://peopleimages.com, and also negotiated a deal with Getty whereby he still submits to them and has faux-exclusive status on iStock

https://www.istockphoto.com/nz/photos/yuri-arcurs?license=rf&assettype=image&sort=mostpopular&mediatype=photography&phrase=yuri%20arcurs

If you're (@OP) a really big hitter, I guess you could try to negotiate your own deal with Getty.

But you can't blame Todayis20 for what you see there. (I'm sure you know that)

Right.  I think todayis20.com is a great resource, and I think I'll donate to the developer.  It's just a real eye-opener to see these stats in graphical form.

I like Todayis20, and also looking at my stats in DeepMeta, from where I only realised this afternoon that I only get my published exclusive rate on about a third my sales, unsurprisingly the Getty sales which net me 20% must be getting pushed, as they are  account for c2/3 of my sales.  >:( :( :'(

todayis20.com is pretty nice.  But I don't think I like this particular graph (if I'm reading it correctly).
But you can't blame Todayis20 for what you see there. (I'm sure you know that)
It's just a visual representation of what we already know about Getty  >:( depending on our percentage rate.

Is there ANY WAY on ESP to see at a glance how much sales were in a month?

I know there is one column (Premium Access and RF - whatever these might be in the real world!) with just 2 numbers to add together to find the total - but surely somewhere there is a 'grand total' (for want of a better phrase) for the month?

Or not....

In the Royalties tab click on the Summary link, middle of the left hand three links. Your default month start date should currently be July 1st 2019 and the total earned in July is given as 'Payment Amount'.

Thanks but just for info - the glitch with this is that when you don't reach payment (!) it shows zero as it is just a record of monies being paid by them to us and not sales.

Oh, sorry, I didn't cotton onto that. I haven't yet reached that depressing milestone quite yet, but I surely will.  >:( :'(

Can I just confirm that July1st statement which was released 20th August (more or less) relates to June sales. Just to be clear.....
No, that relates to your sales in June.

You can always exclude one month's work and experiment in own site, reach directly customers, whatever.
3) Test site with holding new work back from IS.

The OP said s/he is iS exclusive. So no (legitimate by contract) way of experimenting and keeping work on as iS exclusive assuming that the subs would be RF (hardly likely to be RM).

If you go indie, you have to give iS  30 days notice (during which time you can't sell RF yourself, but you could of course be setting up your website offline). Even if you closed your account totally with iS, you couldn't promise buyers on your own site that your files are only available on your own site (if you wanted to do that) as your files can be available and selling from iS's partner sites for up to a year (check the exclusive contract, clause 12).

Also if you go indie then want to return to exclusivity it's 90 days before that happens.

FWIW, I think $5/month is far too low. Why do  you want to sell yourself so short? it's bad enough the agencies doing that.

And the Stats are in!

For me: highest dls of the year, second highest $$ of the year (I'm having a dismal year), but low rpd of $1.46 means it's my new worst July since 2007 (I became exclusive halfway through Aug 2007).
Down 56% on last July's $$, with 10% more dls.

It is what it is (I hate that saying!)

The wheel's turning.
Good luck, everyone, that's the name of the game.

919

I really dont see this is a bad thing at all - i'd love them to reintroduce technical checks for photos and similars.  All i ask is they do it with a degree of consistency.
From comments I read here on msg back in the day, I don't think consistency was ever their strong suit.

920
The buyer gets enormous rights to make several times more money than the copyright owner. Win Win Lose for the creator. Part of the business but, as I said, not fair.
Someone might your file for $1 (or whatever) and use it in an ad which may* generate thousands of pounds.

*or may not. But the 'goods for resale' may not sell.

921
I've learned enough the I could by myself pump out several hundred thousand new images each year if I want to.

How excruciatingly mind numbing that sounds.  You'd burn out in no time.  But seriously, how many "funny poses on white" or "guy in prisoner outfit" does the world need?

People seem to buy the same stuff over and over again. So I just shoot the same thing over and over again with different models. And yes burn out is a real problem. I go though it quite often, then I stop and go do something else with my time for a while.
The other thing you'd be doing with your time is customer service. Even at $5 a month, many customers will expect 5* service. Yesterday. Or as memakephotos says, you'd need to hire people to do customer service round the clock.

General Stock Discussion / Re: wacom drawing tablet

OLD THREAD ALERT
How did you manage to rake this one up from 2013?

BTW, generally, a large tablet is not particularly recommended.
https://creativepro.com/which-size-graphics-tablet-should-you-buy

https://cameratico.com/guides/how-to-choose-wacom-pen-tablet

A set of reviews for drawing, don't know how independent the site is or isn't:
https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-drawing-tablets-for-beginners
and certainly a lot depends on how you use your tablet (drawing, retouching photos, always alone or usually in conjunction with a keyboard etc. And like so many other things, you don't really know how you will use it until you have it.

Why u upload there? Don't get it
These tiny sales are from the Connect scheme which is pay-per-view. They are licensed on a time-limited basis (very limited non-exclusive RM), I've read someone here say the units of sale can be as little as four hours. So that's nothing like a 'normal' RF almost-anything-goes sale. Certainly I've never personally found a file I've only sold under Connect being used online, so it may be fairly rigorously policed (? I have no idea)

To my suprise, I actually found it was true that some of my Connect sales have aggregated to over $5 net in a month - which is considrably more than a normal RF sale on many micro sites. Win some, lose some.

925
I discovered yesterday that a few of my images had been bought with my commission being .05c. That has to be a new low and just a token for the photographer and shocking behaviour from Getty  >:(

It's not a 'new low'. These connect sales have been going for years and can earn you much less than that, and often they aggregate to $0.00000 net, literally. Possibly you didn't notice them before (I don't think we actually know if they aggregate to 0)
