Hard to justify the extra cost of the D3 when the D700 has all the IQ elements, is more portable when you need it and has some dust filtering. Still over twice the weight of my current body though

IS: 40% - up 32% on May - BME SS: 38% - up 18% DT: 13% - up 30% BME FT: 6% - up 42% BME BS: 2% - up 45% Overall it was a month of 2 halves - the first half was below budget, but received a significant spike in the last 2 weeks both from increased downloads and a few extended license sales. Overall still not quite up to the 1K per month mark, but getting very close July is the lucky month hopefully!

Did a graph on Alexa comparing ISP, DT, SS, and StockXpert and the dip at June is telling.
Bit too early to tell about June from Alexa - if you take out the smoothing, the June dip looks awfully like a normal weekend to me -its just that the last statistic available is from the 7th which happens to be a Saturday. Click on the little - that removes the smoothing of the graph and the results should reflect weekly patterns far better. The interesting thing about this graph is that March, April and Early May look down - June seems to be picking up. [edited to remove expired image]

Don't know how I stumbled across this thread again, but thought it worthy of a refresh - surely there are lots of members not pinned!

I'd also endorse: Goodbye Lenin, Himmer uber Berlin, and Das Leben der Anderen - are all fantastic movies.
Some other good ones are: Der bewegte Mann, Rossini and Mostly Martha. As a way of learning the language though you could also try to track down some American movies that have been dubbed over in German - often the language will be simpler than moves that are originally in German, and the themes and storyline are probably more familiar too. Basically almost all Hollywood movies are shown in Germany with voice-over rather than subtitles so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Just some wild speculation, but the biggest ace they have up their sleeve is the link with Getty if they offered exclusives more ability to submit images there it would be a much bigger drawcard for many I suspect.

i am really surprised that $10,000 is the upper tier.
Actually I'm not that surprised. The way I see it, the big players that are well above $10K are already locked into a strategy that involves more than one site, or they are already exclusive on IS. Some of the other smaller sites FL and DT in particular give the top submitters a higher profile already by having direct links as to who they are, and that's on top of the higer % on fotolia. Its people in the $3-15K band that are probably contributing the bulk of useful material and also still in a position to make a switch to go exclusive on IS. Its from that band that the next wave of big players will also come from. Whether the increase is enough remains to be seen though. Interesting times ahead.

Tons of threads about sales tanking??What ya think??
Including your threads? Last month was pretty good overall but trailed off towards the end. This month has been a bit up and down - the 1st was way down, but that's to be expected, then yesterday was half the DL' that I'd usually have on a weekday. I uploaded a batch of 40 that appeared in the search engine today, so will see what effect this has. I think SS has also lowered their standards on submissions for whatever reason lately - I did a search on Egypt just to see how much material has come online since I uploaded some photos from there - about 900 photos since I uploaded 2 months ago - thing is about 500 of those were pretty dull looking photos of fish and crabs.

Maybe fotolia's search engine deserves a (dis)honourable mention in this?

- Is THE BIG BROTHER watching us??
Have you notice sudden downloads decrease after a "BAD" post
because i have?
P.S. ( "JUSTICE" is justice as you know and is also just a nick name to avoid BIG BROTHER"
TO BE CONTINUED ....
Big brother is smart enough to work out who you are... looks like your downloads on ALL sites are going to be ruined now!!!

Am I the only one who thinks they are holding out to see how badly istock's new subscription plan hits them?
That is the only reason I can see for dragging their feet like this....
Could well be a factor, although I wouldn't think that the effect would be all that fast. I think they wanted to make an announcement early just to keep people interested, and will probably drag it out until the 2nd week of May...

I'd be happier if the website and profile links were down with the portfolio links... and the idea of having some more info bellow the avitar sounds good to me...

Maybe its just the latest bug in the search engine where if you search for the infinite collection it brings up all the rejected photos in the free section instead?

I also didn't put down my goals at the start of the year, but have sort of been working to my own targets since I quit work in May last year. At that time I was aiming to increase my earnings by about $3 each week and to have an average of 15 photos a week approved.
One year on, and naturally there have been ups and downs, but I've achieved the income target, and the approved photos is about 14.7, which is fairly close also.
I'm in the process of setting some new, and more ambitious targets for the next 12 months!

I was about to post something asking the exact same thing - I've heard that Photoshelter allows you to use FTP to upload to other sites - do any of the others - smugmug / zen allow you to do this?

Again large batch of files rejected with some cryptic reason
* Custom * Inaccurate keywords
What the heck is this "Custom" ?
Custom I'm sure refers to their standard practice of rejecting large batches of images at once..

Overall BME even though my downloads were down a fraction on last month. I'm still edging up towards the $1K mark and getting well within striking distance. Hoping may cracks it for me SS: 45% BME (by a bee's willy) IS: 39% BME - +17% DT: 9% BME - +17% FT: 4.5% Still not so lucky in the lucky dip search BS: 2.5% 2 promising weeks followed by 2 weeks of next to nothing Also 3 sales from Digitalstock.de from hardly any files online, although not included in the breakdown. Still nothing from Snapvilliage, Cresock and I canned Canstock so nothing coming there.

Yeah well I just uploaded a big batch of files there in an attempt to get some downloads happening - I think the new uploads sometimes come up on searches, but I think its really a process of lucky dip.
While the idea of ranking keywords is ok in principle, I think the execution on FL is woefully lacking, and its about time they fixed their search. Maybe they should rename their relevance criteria as "lucky dip" because that what it seems to be.

At the risk of exposing an area of gross ignorance... what's the benefit of RSS... and do you have any tips to using it??
I use RSS to read all the blogs i want to read in one place, once or twice a day. I happen to use Bloglines but Google Reader does the same thing. Basically I have a section for stock blogs, photography blogs, business blogs, my friends etc. Whenever they update, I can see that in my reader - so instead of visiting 20 pages to read 20 blogs, I visit one and read it like a newspaper.
http://www.bloglines.com
Thanks for that! Will have to give it a go - might cut down on my procrastination time!

If anything its macro-stock sites that are far more vulnerable. I suspect that in future their market will become limited far more to niche areas.
They might have had a place in times when there were far more barriers to entry due to the cost of equipment, processing and distribution, but through digital imaging, the market has changed irreversibly.
In my humble opinion, some photographers have a very over-inflated sense of their own talent - in the past they have been protected by agencies that nurture egos and deliberately maintain an air of exclusivity that is often unrelated to true artistic or technical ability. Hopefully to some extent microstock offers an alternative to this with a far more level playing field.
