Software - General / Microsoft Release New Photo Info tool
« on: January 23, 2007, 14:56 »
This is from the MS site (@ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/photoinfo.mspx):

Microsoft Photo Info is a new software add-in for Microsoft Windows that allows photographers to add, change and delete common "metadata" properties for digital photographs from inside Windows Explorer. It also provides enhanced "hover tips" and additional sort properties for digital photographs in Explorer (in Details view).

Microsoft Photo Info runs on 32-bit versions of Windows XP (with Service Pack 2 or later) and the Windows Vista operating systems.

Using Microsoft Photo Info

After running Setup, a new "Photo Info" item appears in the file context menu in Windows Explorer. Simply select one or more image files in Windows Explorer, right-click and choose Photo Info. Use the tab pages to choose the properties you wish to view or change, then click OK or Apply to save your changes. Microsoft Photo Info does not modify the image pixel data in any way when saving changes; only valid "metadata" properties are updated or added to the image file.

Microsoft Photo Info supports most of the common IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) properties commonly used in digital photography workflows.

Features

• View or edit photo metadata from inside Windows Explorer. Now, advanced image properties are at your fingertips from within Windows.

• Edit images individually, or as a collection. Photo Info has two edit modes: individual and collection, making it easy to update many images at the same time.

• Quick recall of recent entries. For some properties, Photo Info remembers the most recent entries you have typed. To recall a recent entry, click on the drop down arrow and select it from the list.

• Generate copyright notice automatically. Photo Info can generate a standard copyright notice automatically from the Author and date Created information, if present.

• Quick recall of location details. To help save time when entering location information, Photo Info can save location details under a name you provide. Recall these details by selecting the location name from the drop-down menu.

• Correct EXIF capture date / time information. Photo Info can optionally update the EXIF date/time information as recorded in the image file by your camera. You can use this feature to correct the file capture date if your camera's clock was set incorrectly (for example, to the wrong time zone).

• View EXIF properties. Click on the Details tab to view common EXIF properties. Click on More properties for additional details.

• Preview the image. To see a larger preview of the image, double-click on the thumbnail.

• Enhanced hover tips. Hover tips have been enhanced for JPEG, TIFF and other supported file types in Windows Explorer.

• Custom column properties. In Windows Explorer when viewing a folder in Details view, additional sort properties are available for supported image types.

Supported file types

The initial release of Microsoft Photo Info supports the following common image file types: JPEG, TIFF, WDP, HDP (HD Photo), NEF, CR2, and CRW1. Support for additional file formats is under consideration for a future release.

1 Support for CRW files requires that an associated THM file is present in the same folder as the selected CRW image. (THM files are thumbnail "sidecar" files generated by certain Canon cameras.)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Banned From Istock! What shall I do?
« on: January 22, 2007, 15:53 »
I wrote back saying that I had searched the internet for inspiration for some of my designs, and I was working from some of them and had in fact uploaded those files in error and was happy for them to be removed.

Did you upload someone else's files?  If so, how do you "accidentally" do that?

New Sites - General / Re: is it possible to make a living?
« on: January 20, 2007, 07:56 »
...is it possible to earn a living doing this? is there any one out there earning a decent amount ($400 a month or more?)

What I want to know is where can you earn $400/mth and consider that "earning a living"?

Here in the U.S., you need to earn a few thousand a month MINIMUM to live.

Microstock News / Re: API Exposed - Shocks Thousands
« on: January 19, 2007, 17:32 »
hmm has anyone checked this out?  downloaded it?

It seems that you can't just download the API.  You basically have to give them a business proposal and then if they like what you have to say, then they will give you access to it (which they can revoke at any point in the future).

I briefly tried to look into it, but they don't even let you know what they API is capable of.  In other words, they don't tell you the exact functions that they provide.  So how is anyone to know what they can use it for?

Anyone else having trouble getting into DT?  I have been trying for over an hour and haven't even gotten their usual page with the guy getting electrocuted.

You guys missed the marketing speak... said they are the 'world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency'. All this has to mean is that they either have more images than the other subscription based sites or more subscribers.

Sorry, but that is not what they said.  Re-read the release (or the first post in this thread).  It says:

"Shutterstock®, already the world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency, today announced another milestone: Shutterstock has the largest photo collection in the microstock industry."

My guess (on the "too dark" images) is that they are purely looking at a histogram and making a judgement based on that alone.  But I could be wrong...

ImageVortex.com / Re: how is ImageVortex?
« on: January 16, 2007, 06:41 »
here is a question i have always wanted to ask a nature photog.

Why do you like non-zoom lenses so much.

I am nowhere near as good a nature photographer as some others, but here are my comments:

- First off, you need fast lenses for animal shots, especially birds, since animals tend to move quite a bit.  The fastest lenses are non-zooms.

- Second, the best nature shots usually come during the "magic hour".  So, once again, non-zooms are best for low-light situations.

- Finally, animals don't usually approach humans, so you usually need a long lens to capture them properly.  Once again, a non-zoom usually gives you the longest focal lengths.

Hopefully, someone with more experience than me will chime in...

The ones that sold were mainly African wildlife and landscapes.  Here are three of them:

Those are some very beautiful photos.  Congrats.

What type of gear are you using?  You must have some fantastic lenses...

« on: January 15, 2007, 19:20 »
DT accepted this one the other day:

so I uploaded more of this series (and I still have many to go, in other colors).  They were rejected for "Lack of composition", "Poor color", "Poor lighting setup, poor contrast or incorrect exposure" and "This is a very well covered subject in our data base", with three of these four reasons given in each of the following two images:

I don't see how they differ so much from the first one...  It's really new to me to have to many reasons for rejection in just one image.  I'm flattered!

Regards,
Adelaide

Unfortunately, this seems like another case of one inspector liking your image, and another inspector not liking it.

Also keep in mind that JPG files degrade and will leave artifacts (often mistaken for noise or a dirty lens) EVERY TIME YOU OPEN THEM..

It's actually every time you save a JPG that it degrades.  You probably meant that, but I just wanted to clarify...

It doesn't seem that digg.com bought the image, since they are just providing a link back to Crestock.com (where the image is displayed without any watermark).

Crestock.com / Re: Phonecall from Crestock
« on: January 11, 2007, 10:04 »
First off, congratulations on the great image.

But personally, I would be very upset if I was in your situation.

Crestock is displaying your photo without ANY watermark whatsoever.  So even though thousands of people are viewing your image, you don't make anything from FREE views.  On top of that, why should anyone buy your image when they can just steal it for FREE (LEGAL DISCLAIMER AND MUMBO JUMBO: I am not recommending that anyone actually steal your image, nor would I do that myself).

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Manual vs. Auto Disambiguation

...can you undo it?

No, you cannot.  Once an image has been DAed, it cannot be un-DAed (unless you delete the photo and resubmit it).

Shutterstock.com / SS Claims to be World's Largest Microstock
« on: January 09, 2007, 19:04 »
A news release went out today that begins with the following statement:

"Shutterstock®, already the world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency, today announced another milestone: Shutterstock has the largest photo collection in the microstock industry."

And then there is this line:

"The running total published on Shutterstock's homepage refers only to the photographs that have made the cut and are accepted into the collection, unlike other stock agencies that include rejected or deleted images into their "total" figures. "

See the following for the official SS thread:

Honesty is relative.

Honesty is only relative for people that don't believe in an absolute truth.
And that absolute truth is?

I am not trying to get into a philosophical or religious debate, but since you asked...

For those that believe, God is THE absolute truth.

For those that don't believe, there is usually no such thing as an absolute truth.  "To each his own" is a common motto (or something similar).  Some people believe that there are many paths to God.  That is, everything leads to the same place.  For them, truth is relative.

My belief (as a Christian) in absolute truth is as follows:

- God exists.
- God is perfect and sinless.
- A lasting relationship with God requires us to become perfect and sinless.
- Humans are imperfect and sinful creatures, thus cannot have a lasting relationship with God (on their own merits).
- Jesus the * was crucified to "bridge the gap" between humans and God.  His blood "covered" our sins.  His blood didn't MAKE us perfect, but it TREATS US as if we are perfect (the term used in the Bible is that humans are "justified" which you might appreciate as a lawyer).
- Humans can therefore have a lasting relationship with God if they accept the sacrifice that Jesus the * made.

There is more of course, but those are the most important points.

I hope that I was able to convey them in an easy to understand manner.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

I was just on the site and read the latest blog and looked at the newest Photo of the Moment (a bulldog in a party outfit).  So, needless to say, there are no problems from the East Coast of the U.S. (*, NC).
