Adobe Stock / Re: What sells on Adobe Stock?
« on: December 23, 2017, 10:06 »
And about the other answers that I got to my simple question? I will not lose my precious time to comment the stupid answers!!

You just did.

It's like asking where the gold can be found during the Gold Rush. Although in the case of microstock the rush is over.

The article states that this ruling does not mean ALL stock photos aren't subject to copyright, only in the case of this particular photo.

But I don't agree with the verdict. In my opinion, every photo is a photographer's creation, whether or not the subject is 'boring', or 'not creative enough'. It's created because the photographer pushed that buttonm so by definition it should be subject to copyright laws.

Well, time to retire.

No more money in it. Thanks for the easy pickins...

Ask me anything

All I ask is that you keep doing what you're doing. After all, it's Christmas, a time for sharing. I think I speak for all of us when I say: it's not the money that makes me happy, it's the fuzzy feeling I get when I know others are enjoying my work as well!

Finally, no more PJPEG!

ProRes is what you're looking for.

If I could encode ProRes on my PC - I would do it a long time ago...

Check out AfterCodecs, if you want to encode ProRes on a Windows PC! Works like a charm in After Effects CC.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: November stats
« on: December 21, 2017, 06:53 »
By far the worst month of the year. Truly laughable compared to what we used to make at iStock. This year it's my 5th agency in total revenue, and it used to be number 1.

Did you report him?
I did. But I think they need more complaining people to close the account.

Did SS really demanded for more people complaining?
I thought, if a person complains about just one image then SS warn the thief to remove that image. If several people complain then SS close the account. We'll see what they will do. I have checked and found 5-6 images that belong to some other contributors who should be informed but no contact info.

I doubt it works that way. 5-6 stolen images is no longer a coincidence, so they should close the account.

Recently I'm getting lots of emails from Bigstock promoting some new 'limited time' offer with 30% or 50% discount.

Tuesday it was a "One day only: 50% off a subscription. Today, Thursday, it's a 72-hour offer: 30% off image credit packs.

They certainly don't mind giving away discounted images! I'm wondering, is there any other agency that offers so many discounts? Seems to me they are desperate to attach new customers, but why this race to the bottom?

New uploads to iStock? I don't know what that means.

I'm having the best December ever, thanks to some nice extended image and video sales. And we're only 7 days in.

The site doesn't really look enticing to me, a little cheap even. Mainly because of the boring design and the obvious spelling mistakes (plus grammar and punctuality errors). You should let a native English speaker (preferably a professional translator) translate it for you. Everything has to be flawless (in terms of presentation and content) if you want to convert people into buyers. Your site needs a lot of work.

I think the watermark is off-putting as well. Redesign it and make it more transparent.
The Google Map is only useful if all of your stuff is geo-tagged; currently it shows only 10 locations.

I don't want to disappoint you, but I've tried setting up a website for my own stock vectors, and although I got everything up and running, I wasn't really successful. It was hard to get buyers, let alone enough traffic without a sufficient marketing budget. It's fun to have a little shop of your own, but for revenue you're better off contributing to existing agencies.

Canva / Re: Contributor update about tax
« on: December 05, 2017, 12:58 »
This is what Lee told me back then.  I assume nothing has changed.
-------------
Yes, we understand not all countries tax years are the same and this is awkward. We hope to have functionality for you to generate reports for a custom period in the future, but this specific report, with these specific dates, is a legal requirement from the Australian government. Sorry we can't yet help you out with this.

Cheers,
Lee.

Thanks. Not a really helpful response from Canva. 'We hope to have functionality for you in the future'...? They should have had functionality in place on day 1 for stuff like this.

Canva / Re: Contributor update about tax
« on: December 04, 2017, 12:52 »
The part that concerns me is

You do not need to complete any forms, but you do need to keep us informed about your country of registration. And the end of each Australian tax year (June 30) we will send you a document listing the tax withheld that you can use to claim credit from the tax authorities in your country.

That doesn't coincide with the tax year for the USA - so I'm not sure how we are going to report this.

So in April 2018 I'll have a document showing only 6 months of withholding.
Then in April 2019 I will have a document showing the withholding for half of 2017 and half of 2018?

The costs for the extra tax forms my accountant is going to have to fill out will probably negate the refund I'll get for claiming the tax payments.

Did any of you get the proper tax documents of the withheld tax after June 30? In my country the tax year ends at December 31st with tax returns filing date somewhere in April. Canva's documentation would come too late to file it for the current year. How did you solve this and is Canva going to change this?

People see patterns everywhere. The first couple of notes in Beethoven's Fifth Symphony correspond exactly with my monthly revenue fluctations, something's fishy here!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Copy space keyword, useful or not?
« on: November 25, 2017, 13:55 »
If there is copy space, I can't imagine what harm 'copy space' as a keyword could do. If it's spam, it's as bad as all the other spam. If a site limits the number of keywords and you have reached the maximum with more important keywords, leave it out.

I think it's important to add but as you say if it's spam then like any other words, less important when buyers get tired of seeing copy space on images that don't really have copy space. Spam keywords are like putting smiling woman on a picture of a sliced tomato. Buyers aren't going to download and it just makes them angry. I don't like searching for something and finding unrelated results, neither do our buyers. I wish the agencies would crack down on this, but like reviews, it seems that no one cares.

I think they do care, a useful search is also beneficial to the agency itself. It's just hard to control, it takes time and resources to check each image, and if contributors add keywords after submitting, it's hard to keep in check.

941
That's why I've always treated it as side income. Although the idea seems nice, I'd hate to be dependent on a couple of agencies who only listen to their shareholders (and not to their contributors). It's an unstable road.

Worst Month of the Year and about the same as my monthly revenue in 2011.

Who cares, they're no longer a top 3 agency for me, SS and AS have taken iStock's place.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Dubious Email From Deposit Photo...
« on: November 17, 2017, 10:32 »
it's an odd email, since they're assuming you're exclusive with iStock.

Also, 35% isn't a very good percentage, but if you can still sell the image non-exclusively, go ahead.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia allow derivatives of your work
« on: November 12, 2017, 05:53 »
I read the fine print 9 years ago. Age makes you forget, especially when you are more used to dealing with other licences these days. Thanks for the links. We all need a refresher sometimes.
By derivative I dont mean crop a bit, add a bit of text, change the background color, make it black and white, etc.  I mean completely copy the original photography into a differernt medium, weather its a painting, a digital cartoon style.

So reading it again, its not just EL licence that allows this, Standard licence does too.

It's only theft if that derivative is put up for sale somewhere else, or if a buyer claims to be the copyright holder of the derivative work.

But it is perfectly allowed to alter a stock photo, illustration or video for use in another personal or commercial project.

123RF / Re: 123 new license option - Simply Stunning
« on: November 03, 2017, 08:34 »
The words 'exciting', 'vision', 'technological innovation' and 'donation basis' combined spell doom and disaster.

There's nothing new about this concept. People (often amateurs and hobbyists) offer CC0 content on their own website or on some platform, with an occasional Paypal donation link as well.
How is this innovating in any way, let alone profitable for us? We're not hobbyists who are happy to see 100,000 downloads and a meager $10 in donations!

Of course, 123RF is NOT doing this for free. Oh no, ad revenue, free traffic, some backlinks to their actual site to obtain paying customers. But we should be thankful they allow us to spend our free time doing things we like so we can see our stuff being used for free. Money isn't the only thing that makes us happy.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Limited Licensing Program
« on: November 03, 2017, 04:11 »
I don't see the problem with Pond5 offering this kind of time-limited license. It's not necessarily a bad deal for contributors. Of course it's lower royalties per license than a standard license because this is time-limited. Apparently there's a demand from their customers, so why wouldn't they offer it?
