I've sold enough images in the 50M range in the past year to make it worthwhile uprezing to this size if you can do it properly.

I wonder if he'd be considered a 'master' of photography if he started out today. Don't get me wrong I like his photographs but a lot of that is because of what he went through to create them in the times that he did, not for the actual photographs themselves.

At the time there was no internet or 2,000 How-To books or hundreds of tours to take you to the exact place to put your tripod or much else. It's impossible to speculate how someone would do today based on their historic performance.

« on: July 23, 2010, 15:24 »
I agree it doesn't make sense. You can buy cards of equal capacity for less and use them as back up or use them as primary cards for your camera. More options this way.

You this all the time on Flickr. But from people with cash in pocket. For the short while I've been there I've been contacted by guide book companies, design firms etc.

A big thanks for Crestock, although I terminated my account there some time ago I did receive a final payout just now.

I didn't say I hated making video, although it isn't my favorite.  I said I hated watching it.  As a consumer sentiment, that shouldn't excite your friend too much.
What I've noticed is what I don't like doesn't seem to translate to market reality. I hate movies that look like video and not film, I hate the moving/dancing ads on a browser screen, I hate seeing images sell for a quarter while I pay $4 for a coffee.

198 ports?  doesnt say much at all, had they taken the yop say 1000 ports it would have been much more interesting.

Do you really need to look that far down a list? Elections are usually forecast by asking a very individuals how they voted as they left the stations. The 198 ports represent, according to JP, over a half million of the best images. To me that's a very good sample size, especially off the top. There seems to be a desire to disbelieve any stat or indication that the micro business might be on a plateau. Which of course gives the opportunity for a decline.

Analyzing the present and predicting the future are two different things. Jim's pretty good at analyzing industry data. Those closest to an industry tend to be the most myopic and I think Jim is farther from it than most of us guys. Everything can change tomorrow for unknown reason but I tend to agree, a plateau is here for the moment.

They sell vodka, right?

Many years ago I was sitting on a wharf in LaConner with a big bag of 645 gear photographing passing fishing boats thinking to myself, wow those are big waves. Darn thing washed right over the dock and filled my bag.

I really wonder how the memory cards made out.
Probably okay. They found got memory cards from cameras involved in the Indonesian tsunami that works after the fact and from salt water.

I have very good friend who runs a kitchenware business who never hires me for catalogue jobs and who is a very good photographer himself. He outsources the photography so he can run his business. It's much easier that way. I've done a fair amount of furniture photography for manufacturers and designers and it's not at all easy.

Third, the store owner is your friend, you should take that in account. Hey, give him discount.
So, good luck

Likely this won't persist so you might as well charge full rate.

'From an aesthetic point of view, the images do not appeal to Veer customers.'

Which are few and far between.

966
I had exactly 50 accepted and exactly 50 rejected for exactly the same reason with the latest batch

"Other concerns. Composition, styling, and/or lighting do not quite reflect the aesthetic that appeals to Veer customers."

Some of them I can understand...but all of them for exactly the same reason? I find that strange. Any one else have a mass rejection where each of the reason's were exactly the same? The rejects I got before would have the reason explained a little more and the rejects varied...not all the exact same. Many of these are on all the other sites I'm on and sell well. Probably if I contacted them and questioned this I probably wouldn't hear back because of the overload from others because of rejects from them. It just doesn't make sense. Now I'll probably be stuck on there with a few dollars shy of payout and never reach it since I have had absolutely no sales. I wasn't worried before because of the year end payout, I figured I had nothing to worry about, but now since they decided to change the rules after everyone started submitting to the Veer Dash for Cash, I am.

I personally think rejection reasons are nebulous at best at any site. Especially the above types. It's purely subjective and the whim of a reviewer.

May this help, it's actually how I got my pictures off Alamy before 6 months

http://marketplace.veer.com/about/contributoragreement

A. Contributor may terminate this Agreement at any time by providing Veer with thirty (30) days notice by using the Contact Us page to provide notice to Veer or by following the written notice provision below.

30 days is more like if it was the 3rd world war. At Alamy it took 3 or 4 days. It's just a suggestion though, I don't remember how I get out of Veer exactly. I just know it worked well with Alamy

Sorry to hijack this. just one question regarding Alamy, was that your whole portfolio or just a portion?

Veer / Re: Dash for what???
« on: July 06, 2010, 13:10 »
It shouldn't be happening.
We can only hope things will change for the better.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I want them to do well.

The planned mid-summer merge of veer into main collection and promised marketing should hopefully change things for the better. At least for us microstockers.
If nothing happens even then, then I will start worrying.

As they say the best predictor of the near future is the recent past. Give it up.

Veer / Re: Dash for what???

They screwed from the old Veer and broke it. I had clients who bought from the old Veer all the time. Unique stuff there.
I believe this to be yet another of a very long line of tactical blunders by the parent company. Every opportunity that afforded Getty was there for Corbis except of course the one or two people who would move on them. Always streamlining and consolidating and m-u-c-k-i-n-g (silly word remover won't let me just spell a simple word here, not meant to be the f word)  about. If they wanted to move Veer towards micro then they should have just done it instead of going through SnapVillage (one of those names I complain so much about) then creating VMP then moving away macro images. Clients must leave after every one of those moves and NEVER return. I don't care if SnapVillage failed but knocking off Veer as collateral damage in the process is a real shame(or should that be sham).

question on crestock

Will we see a commission increase to bring it more in line with other agencies? (especially the subscriptions)

By stevepigeon on Monday, 5 July 2010 2:16 PM
No plan to revise the commission rate at this juncture. However, I will say that our subscription rate is pretty much industry standard when compared to the major players in subscription.

Steve Pigeon, President - Crestock Corporation

Note to Steve Pigeon,

Huh??? Have another look. This sorts of statement just make you look dumb or arrogant.

I firmly believe many, many would upload for even less than 0.25 cent.

Given some think free is just fine I'd say you're right. And yes the idea that anything is better than nothing is prevalent. So why not 20 cents or 15 cents? After all I;m sure there will be just that many more downloads to make up for the loss of income???

I think if Masterfile is really serious to make it in the Microstock market they will have to offer something more attractive to photographers than what is currently on offer on Crestock.

The Crestock legacy is very negative with most contributers. I did find it amazing how many people kept submitting even though they rarely got paid. Crestock should have failed from the mass exodus.

« on: July 02, 2010, 10:38 »
I think this view thing is an electronic disease that's going around. If so IS probably caught it from Veer. My Veer views have been WAY UP for a few months while 2010 sales for me remain at ZERO.

I hope there's a cure discovered before it spreads to SS, DT, FT, etc.

;)  It's the new "make you feel good program".
