Cameras / Lenses / Re: Olympus XA series
« on: March 10, 2007, 11:50 »
Great little camera. I used the original XA a couple of times. Much better than the Rollei 35T that I had, although that wasn't a bad camera either.

952
The new Sigma seems to be a great little camera. I would love to have one. Wonder what the price will be, and how I can find an excuse to buy one  ???

953
The sony R1 also uses a APS sized sensor doesn't it?

Yes, but it's bigger and more expensive than most amateur DSLR's. It kind of has the disadvantages of both worlds, not being able to change lenses and not having a proper viewfinder.

The best part will be when MS in 6-7 years finds out that it "forgot" to make camera manufacturers aware of the fact that they should pay a license fee for the new standard. If all of them have adapted it by then, which is absolutely possible, the $0.02 for each camera will see to that Bill Gates' retirement fund is again back in the black  :D

No... that was a cynical thought.... they could never.... shame on you Jorgen, for making up things like this...   ::)

epixx ... you shock me ... shock me to the core. Do I detect a the faintest hint of cynicism here? How could you entertain even the teensiest-weensiest doubt about the wonderful things iStock are doing for us photographers?

I mean ... you only have to read their forums to realise how wickedly awesome they are.   ;D

noooooo.... you must have misunderstood me completely   ;D   ;D   ;D

Probably looks great on the camera LCD. Lots of photos don't make it further anyway, so maybe it's a good thing   ::)

At last a portrait lens that creates some distance to the subject. Actually, the subject may not even have to leave home   :D

And for travelling, you don't even need to leave the hotel. Just book a room at the top floor, and take close-up images of anything in the whole city. Should be a nice compliment to the Zeiss 1700mm f/4.0. Bring both, and you're all set   :D

I wish they would make the submitting process less of a hassle instead of these useless updates.  :-\

We may have misunderstood the concept. The whole idea with istock is possibly to create a full time hobby for the contributors. The more hours invested, the better. More time consuming features are just added steps towards fulfillment of that task, and for the creation of the ever happy, happy istock family who contributes with ecstatic enthusiasm to fill the coffers of the mother of all stock: Getty Images

Another complete waste of time from IS.

I'm sure the forums over there will be full of happy comments about this amazing new invention and how it improves the life quality of all involved  ::)

I wonder how grainy the images will be though...

So it's not only me then. Good   :)

I guess they'll correct it within a couple of years, or maybe it's another of those "improvements" at IS   :D

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon has announced the D40x
« on: March 07, 2007, 14:41 »
Oh... and I would have chosen a 1D3 over a D2X any day. It's a better camera. But for the big picture, those cameras are completely uninteresting. The volume and the profits are in the lower price ranges. That's probably also the reason why Nikon is pushing so hard with consumer cameras and lenses, and more or less, at least in my view, ignoring the pro segment.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon has announced the D40x

The reason seems to be that both the D40 (old version) and the D80 runs circles around the EOS 400D and 30D.

Wow, what a statement!

I can tell that you are a die-hard Nikon fan.

I do have an F-mount Fuji S3, but no Nikons, and an Olympus E-1 for rainy days and travel. For lenses, I would actually prefer Canon, since they have fast primes that I prefer to use. However, if I should choose a camera body today, the features and ergonomics of the Nikons are impossible to ignore, particularly the D40/80/200 trio.

One could always argue that the Canons have better high-ISO performance, but the difference is very small now, so ergonomics, features and lenses will be important to many. Nikon's amateur lenses also seem to be excellent value.

The change in the Japanese market is rather dramatic, since Canon had a very comfortable lead until last autumn. However, neither the 30D nor the 400D brought much new, except for the anti-dust in the 400. This is a big contrast to the three Nikons, which were all completely new cameras when they were released, all of them within a period just exceeding 12 months.

The recent launch of the 10mp D40X, which will supplement but not replace the D40, and the apparently excellent 55-200mm AF-S VR, just strengthens Nikon's lead here. I must say I'm very tempted to buy the D40X as a compact backup for my S3, even if it can't AF with most of my lenses.

January over December: 55% increase
February over January: 38% increase
March seems to increase at the same rate. No subscription sales yet, but generally better prices per photo and more photos sold  :D

It may be a font problem. Try to make outlines of the text and see if that helps. Do you use a Mac or a PC?

epixx,

You aren't having a very good week over at StockXpert, are you?

We are definitely listening. Peter has done an amazing job with StockXpert, but he his only one man. Therefore he put in place some policies that would ensure he could manage the site as it grew, even if it meant the site might grow slower than it should.

Now that Jupitermedia has added resources to the site, we have begun re-evaluating and revamping policies that are necessary to accelerate the growth of the collection and sales. But this takes a little bit of time. We want to make sure we implement clear and flexible guidelines for our contributors and our reviewers.

You guys have been invaluable to this process, both in terms of bringing it to our attention and how we should prioritize.

Thanks!

Sorry for being such a nuisance, but the reason why I'm so critical at the moment is that StockXpert has a good concept, and I want it to succeed. But it annoys me even more then, when things doesn't work right for me, neither as a photographer nor as a designer.

Although there are no standard answers to anything in this business, some standards have been set by SS and IS, and although it's tempting to try to find ones own way through the jungle, the main road is more often the successful route. To become the winner, you need the best car with the fastest engine. We, the photographers, are the engine, so I think it's a good idea to keep us happy, although some of us do a lot of whining   ;)

968
I've had a couple of those "too many like this already" rejects at StockXpert again, and I was asking myself as a designer if that's good or not.

When I download photos, I look for an agency that has lots of variations over the same theme. Choice is king, and as long as there's not too much keyword spamming, there simply can't be to much of a good thing. The fact that most of the micros have lots of second rate images dating back to their start-up period makes this even more important. If the old photos aren't removed, the only way to make them less visible is to drown them in lots of high quality stuff.

Interestingly, the two most successful agencies, SS and IS, have never rejected any of my photos because they have "too many" or "we are not looking for...". As long as the quality is good, most photos are accepted, also those that are a bit off-beat. A broad selection is probably as important as a deep one. Although I'm not searching for "Buddhist temple in Himalaya" every day, the agency who has it when I need it, gets my vote.

So, I don't buy images at StockXpert, but at DT, or at IS if I can't find it at DT.

StockXpert, are you listening?

My average sales per dl is up to 0.94 in March, up from 0.83 in February and 0.87 in January. Average since May last year is 0.79, so it's certainly going in the right direction  :D

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon has announced the D40x

The D40X is a real killer, and Nikon currently has almost 50% of the Japanese DSLR market. The reason seems to be that both the D40 (old version) and the D80 runs circles around the EOS 400D and 30D.

The competition is really tough now, and even Olympus will probably increase their market shares with their new cameras and lenses. I have both Nikon and Olympus, so I'm a happy camper  ;D

Adobe Stock / Re: Totally crashing on Fotolia
« on: March 06, 2007, 00:47 »
Fotolia is slow for me as well. It surprises me, both because I think they have a nice concept, and because my portfolio there is growing constantly.

What I've also noticed, is that there's a comparatively small portion of my images that sells there. Even IS, where I have a smaller portfolio, sells a much broader selection of my photos, not to speak about SS, where anything sells.

973
An obvious negative consequence of the new sort order, is that, when designers search for certain key words, the same photos will appear every time. To start with, that will give increased sales, since those are probably the best images as well, but long term, customer will get the impression that StockXpert doesn't renew or add to their image bank.

Although it's possible for buyers to change search criteria, the first impression will still remain. And having been a designer for many years, I know enough lazy ones, who will often just pick the first usable image that pops up on the first page.

I did a search for "golf ball", as I had some golf ball images approved at StockXpert recently. I found my new images on page 53. That makes me wonder why I bother to upload new images to StockXpert at all. First they have the highest rejection rate out there, and then, if my photos are approved, they are burried at the bottom of the pile.

« on: March 05, 2007, 22:15 »
Interesting statistics epixx.  Do you have the same portfolio at IS and SS?

Your numbers certainly make SS look appealing.

No, due to the upload restrictions at IS, I have more than twice the number of photos at SS, even if I've had more rejections with the latter. The upload limits make a fair comparison almost impossible, and long term, IS may even be a better deal if I chose to go exclusive, but with DT being a strong competitor as well, I don't see myself doing that.

This obviously also has something to do with photographic style. Some of my top sellers at SS hardly moves at all at IS and vice versa. Even within one theme, the differences can be big sometimes. That's probably a result of a number of things, like customer base, how the search engine works etc.

But as opposed to common "knowledge", my old photos at SS sell rather well, at least as long as I keep uploading new ones.

975
Is this about StockXpert or ShutterStock?

Interesting question. The headline says StockXpert, so I assume it is. No problems with payments from SS in my experience. Just received mine from them today  :)
