This is a runaway freight train.
its' clear as told many times,,most are coming from poor or semi poor country where cost of living let people earn 500 600 dollar and live. and we have not seeing nothing. in those country lives millions of people with a camera.

If you do 0 at DT, is your BME $10 at SS?
I only have a few dozen images on DT, compare to thousands on SS, FT and 123RF. DT has never been a big seller for me, so I don't waste my time uploading there. They also reject a good percentage of my work, so I stopped uploading.
If you want an idea of how much I make on SS, it's 4 figures per month.
i thought 6 appalling week t shutter stock....cleaaly they do something to share the cake between all customer...since monday sam number s of download zero sod zero sales after 15.....dreamstime today sold 5 photos for 35 dollar...not bad this year dreamstime seems more competitive. appalling fotolia also. if you stop uploading for 2 weeks the earning i see earning falling down.

i have the impression that some algorithm prevents me from selling more and more...th months started great plus 40% in the first day compared to febraury then 6 appalling days nothing sold after 14.00, while the three months before i sold practically only from 14 to 24....i understand something change but here it seems so programmed. anyway keep uploading the lot of things i still have to upload.
being positive,. i'm increasing other side of business so micro will be only a side kicks dollar

Yes, it depends on your expectations. Many come into this game expecting to make $10 RPI/year and this is just not possible anymore in Micros for 99% of cases.
I'll take $400 a month from 2700 portfolio but it still isn't enough to cover all my expenses, but it helps offset some costs.
Meanwhile, I'll look to milk what I can from my premium images (so far not happening but I'm optimistic).
Bulgaria must be a nice place, I would love to visit some of the resorts on the Black Sea and try out the beluga caviar!

I can't speak for others but I'm doing OK with my 2700 portfolio, but I do realise this is a losing game. I've long started looking for other options within Midstock/boutique.
I do travel photography and I can't recoup my costs for my travel with subs.
I want to try out video, I've heard good things about pond5.
well what means? i have 4700 and from what i see without any bad comment better looking images....and i cannot say it's good but maybe you earn 400 dollar and you are happy....it seems so strange with such portfolio you can be happy of sales...

Hello everybody,
After uploading my holiday and travel photos to microstock agencies for 3 months, I am rather disappointed by lack of sales - I guess I had false expectations.
I upload to 5-7 agencies, in December mostly holiday pictures from Nice, France and since January photos from my world tour (I travel for 8 months). I used this guide as orientation http://microstockinsider.com/guides/microstock-traveller-working-while-holiday. However I sold only 10 images, adding up to 4$ on Shutterstock and 2 on Dreamstime.
My question to you is whether you see potential to achieve better results with some adjustments or whether the type of photos are just not suitable for stock. In that case I would just continue photography for my leisure but save the annoying keywording and uploading process.
Thank you in advance for taking time, I appreciate your honest comments.

you should just keep the fir 10 images for popularity and trash the rest...the one with boat at sunset is good.
i have been to nice many years and have hundreds of photos of the cote d'azur.
in my opinion if you want to be a travel photographer you must only do this traveling, not having just fun and take some photos. travel photography means 16 hours work day, scouting location, shooting at best light. you shoot only at noon that's why your images have problems of light and exposure.
you need to buy some gradient filter or learn how to stack images.
personally i don't really understand why ss keep adding contributor if they don't show images who can add to the site but just images who can steal one two sales from other portfolio.

why would anyone buy your holiday photos? and if there is one category thats over saturated its travel
Well, travel pictures can sell VERY well, but of course, as you say, the category is incredibly oversaturated (18,000+ pictures of water buffalo, and if you've ever been to Venice, you know how many people visit and take pictures there every day).
Naturally, they have to be really good and done in the right way. The average beach or the average tree won't sell when faced against the competition. Also, try to include yourself in the images, do selfies when jumping off a cliff, or something POV style where you only see your hands paddling a kayak. That stuff sells. But not the average snapshot. You have to evoke emotion and invite the viewer into the image.

and it's mostly travel/holiday stuff. But, includes people and is done in a way that you get a feeling you just want to go there and have an adventure yourself.
I would think more in terms of "travel lifestyle", than just "travel". Of course, if you find really nice landscapes in perfect light or great pictures of wildlife that sells too. But it has to be really good.
You have to plan and stage shots, create a world greater than reality unless it's something really special that would work as editorial.
Do a search for "sunset palm trees" and ask yourself why someone would buy YOUR picture...
this is a couple they shoot them since 2006. personally i find so boring their photo. cliche. if they sells good it won't be difficult to replicate their stuff. this is not travel is lifestyle, basic, and what surprises me it sells, it looks a style of 10 years ago., personally i sell only travel photos and the big problem of many people is that they shoot only landmark and not go deep in travel. they go always the same place. there are location oversaturated and other with minimum cover. for example very few editorial in travel cover different theme like hotel restaurant,people. said this the portfolio linked at beginning is only made of snapshots i'm even surprised ss accepted them.

increasing the quality and number of upload is working for me...i had mostly editorial, in the last year i have seen that uploading is the key. i have still super big backlog to upload so no need to create but just upload.
i'm increasing download constantly since october..20% month....what i'm not seeing is the increase in sod and extended and this is the key for a good income. making 20k at month with 0,38 is becoming difficult:)

u are simply not understanding each other..shutterstock increase volume of sales and contributor..so it's normal a lot of old contributor experienced a fall in earning or better less growth. bigger cake divide by much bigger contributor.

Taxes: where i live and most of western country u pay for this kind of earning from 40% up...so to have a net of 10 u need a gross of at least 17-18... Maybe u live in subsaharian country and pay nothing of taxes.

I realize you're talking about living well off of little money in many posts, but in general, when it comes to talking about income here it makes little sense to compare figures after tax since everyone lives in different countries.
When numbers are thrown around, it's what we get from the stock sites into our payment provider accounts. I don't care what you paid your mom's friend to model or what the tax rates in your particular country are. I care about how big the payouts are.

I don't know why people lie about it but they do. I wouldn't necessarily believe me either. Doesn't really matter. I would certainly check someone's basic math and knowledge of how revenue and profit works before taking them too seriously. I would also compare what they are saying about the industry with my own figures to see if there is any possibility that it makes sense.

in poland with 1000 euro you can live a good life...in france you don-t go out of home. polish girl like 99% of eastern europe love being photographed so it-s pretty easy to find good people for lifestyle shot free or for cheap money. renting a studio in warsaw is cheap, in milan is 10 times more for example. i don-t even speak about cost of living. i go often in poland and i feel a king compared to where i live where a beefsteak cost 30 euro for example.
