I just have to jump in on this crazy concept!

This is just mind boggling! Getty gets all the revenue from the image/ad placement and contributors get $0. I understand their concept, but FREE? Why didn't they just create a new lower pricing category for bloggers only?  It seems illogical to bypass a potential new revenue stream and just jump right into FREE without even testing the waters first.

Does this mean that word press and other template designers can place images directly for use in their templates and sell them? What about scam, porn and other undesirable sites? Can they place your images there? Just sign up at Getty with a fake email, copy the code and you are good to go!

Hi everyone,

We are so sorry for the downtime! We had some DNS issues causing the site not to appear this afternoon. It has been resolved and the site is now available. Everything is just fine...not to worry! Kelly

We should take advantage of the new format. If you look closely at shutterstocks images, they have a hidden bottom section containing their URL and the images file number.

Everyone automatically thinks the world is coming to end in the stock business whenever anything changes even slightly.... sheesh. Learn to think in new ways people.

Sure the agency's watermark and URLs are there, but Google is offering larger, unwatermarked images right next to the agency image.

As an example, I searched for a Sean Locke image. I clicked the "More Sizes" link and this is what I got (see link). Which one would a user click on? The larger, unwatermarked free image taken from a blog or the same iStock image that they have to buy? I don't think anyone should embrace this new format.

Google Images is hurting all stock agencies!

As Dreamstime stated today, the new Google Images format is not only infringing on copyright but is also blocking potential buyers from reaching stock agency sites. We are all experiencing HUGE drops in traffic since the launch of the new format.

Quote from Dreamstime:
This new search result layout not only affects photographers and agencies (licensors), but also websites and webmasters (licensees and/or SEO). This new search result layout has and will continue to drastically diminish traffic to the website who published the image.

Since buyers can now download/copy the image (watermarked or not) right from Google, there is no reason for the buyer to click the Visit Page link which would take them to the image purchase page. This block is preventing proper image licensing and possible new customer conversion. The math is pretty easy: lower traffic = lower sales.

Google has taken the Pinterest model to a whole new level. These images are not theirs to solicit whether it be on a stock site or a personal blog. Contributors rely on agencies to represent their images and generate sales. How are we to do that when the worlds largest search engine bully is preventing us from doing our job for you?

Google has entered into the stock image industry as an unwanted middleman and needs to be stopped. Please help spread the word in the contributor community. Commenting on the webmaster article is a start and may help reverse/rectify the situation. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ro/2013/01/faster-image-search.html

General Stock Discussion / Re: GL New iStock? We Should
« on: January 18, 2013, 16:36 »
I only photograph people, so it looks like I can't even complete the application as it would be impossible for me to find 20 images for application that represent my body of work. I am surprised that an agency would have such a limiting constraint.

Hi, if you only shoot people, please upload them as your 20 images. The reason we ask for a variety of non-people images for your initial application is so that we can get an idea of what types of subjects you shoot. We do accept MR images, and as Sean stated, new submitters cannot add releases until after they are accepted. Thanks

Will you offer video in the future? Might be a good time to reach out to all exclusives at iStock Kelly. Great site and I will be submitting there in the future.

Video is very popular and would be a great addition to our site. Yes, maybe in the future. We look forward to you joining us!

Seemed clear to me. I just looked at the Seller Agreement where it says:
"The Seller acknowledges that GL will not accept any Images that infringe on any copyright, trademark, property- or any other applicable rights. You are solely responsible for the legal status of your Images. You warrant that for each Image You own all the proprietary rights and that You obtained all the necessary releases which You must provide for each submission."

Just checking: that wording seems to suggest you don't accepte editorial?

Correct, we do not offer an editorial license at this time.

Hi All,

We do accept people images!

In the application process we ask that you not upload people images because there is no way to add releases until after you are accepted. To ensure that each applicant is legitimate, we do background checks to make sure the images presented belong to them. In this process, if we see that their portfolio contains MR images, then we activate the MR uploader in their dashboard.

Sorry if this was confusing and not very clear.

Vannphoto:

When the largest and most respected stock agency starts giving away images, it not only tarnishes the reputation of this industry but punishes the rest of us. Agencies are in the business of selling images, not giving them away.

How many potential customers have been lost because they can now access large, unwatermarked images at no charge? Where is the incentive?

All of the agencies on the right directly compete for the same thing...image buyers. If the free image offering continues then the impact could be industry wide. I feel as helpless as you.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to comment about this issue as it truly upsets me. I want to step away from being a stock site owner and speak from a (former) contributor point of view.  It is very disturbing to hear that deals are made without the consent or proper compensation of the contributor. Stock agencies do not own the images...you do.

When you join an agency, you are trusting them to sell your images safely and securely on their site...not to be distributed to unknown partner sites or in undisclosed deals.

This free image fiasco not only hurts contributors, but it is also damaging to the whole stock image industry. If the Google deal continues, then there will be no reason for people to buy images...anywhere.

My sympathies go out to all contributors involved.

The site uploader is up and ready for submissions! FTP will be restored shortly. If you normally upload via FTP, you are welcome to use the site uploader in the mean time. Thanks again for your patience.

New Sites - General / Re: GL stock images
« on: November 05, 2011, 09:44 »
Hello everyone! We know that not being able to upload to GL has been frustrating! During the downtime, we have switched hosts, added several high speed servers and did some review catch up (40,000+ images).  Uploading should be restored by the end of the weekend. We will announce it on MSG when active.

As for the launch of the new site, we have decided to delay the launch until after the holiday buying season. We want to make sure our current buyers are not confused by the new name and new interface. We are just being cautious and do not want to disrupt any sales during this busy holiday time. Thank you for being patient and we look forward to all your new images!
