General Stock Discussion / Re: Featurepics. Opinions please.....
« on: September 07, 2007, 19:53 »
Been with them for a while now.  Have about 200 images with them.  Every time I try to upload through FTP, I can't get FileZilla to connect, so I need to upload manually.  Haven't had a single sale as of yet, with the majority of my images around the $4 mark, some higher.  It's gotten to the point where I won't even upload to them anymore and I'm about to just jump ship completely.

I like the static price.  And, hey, who knows, it may go up again in the future, so thats still okay with me.  What I thought was funny was that this change was effective July 1, 2007 and they send us out an email on August 1.  Think maybe they just made a mistake and meant August, or are they really that slow?

Aren't there already Professional Associations out there for all different types of photogs?  Why would we need another one?

Woohoo!  I'm rich and didn't even know it!  :D  Well, I must be since I own two digital cameras, one film camera, I have a computer that *gasp* even has a printer, AND holy crap, I have broadband internet!

Wow, what an...interesting...individual!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are you serious?
« on: July 16, 2007, 23:30 »
I shoot as much as possible, but have a lot of things on my plate other than photography which restrict my time.  I also shoot things other than stock, so my portfolios are small.  Does that mean I can't be considered serious for another year or two till I reach the 1000+ mark?

While I'm not denying that there are a lot of contributors that start off with a few images and then peter out and abandon their ports, I'm not so sure that the people that have less than a 1000 images aren't just as serious as those with 5,000+.  Also, what about those people that have less than a 1000 images at DT or StockXpert, but have 1200+ at another site?  Would they be considered to be not "serious" photographers because they have a higher rejection rate at DT than somewhere else?

Sorry about your fall and your camera too.  Hope you're doing okay with that.  But, other than that, I'm glad that you had a good time and got lots of images.  I can't wait to see them!

A notebook and a good pair of walking shoes.  I had an absolute blast in Ireland when I went in '05, but there is a lot of walking required.  I took along a small notebook so I could record some info on my shots.  That way when I got home, it would be much easier to keyword and describe.  Also, it was nice to have a record of everything I saw and did for the family and friends back home when they got subjected to my DVD of images!  ;D

Most of all, have fun and good luck on your shooting!

Lighting / Re: New Light in town?
« on: April 20, 2007, 00:16 »
How did you set up your lights?  How many lamps?  I have these bulbs that I got from Wal-Mart that are almost the same as the ones you have.  They are 100 watt equivalent and give off a really nice white-blue light which I love.  But they really don't seem to be that strong.  In fact every shot I took with them came out pretty bad.  So I'm trying to figure out what it is that I'm doing wrong.  I would love to know how you set up so I can compare notes.

A good way to get to the corporate jets is to go to a smaller county airport (dunno what they would be called in Canada).  Check with one of the FBOs there to see if you can set up a shoot.  Many of the fractional corporate jets don't mind as long as you mask out the tail number, but you may have to contact the parent company as the pilots don't always have the clearance to allow it.  You could also see if you would be allowed to go on a test flight or something with a maintenance crew.  They may say no, but all you can do is ask.  I work for a FBO in the US and remember having a few photogs come through.  Also, there are quite a few of the smaller aircraft (piston/prop) that go out on photography runs.  Maybe you could hook up with one of them and catch some of the corp. jets at the same time.

About the penguins.  They are just so hot right now.  What with "Happy Feet" and "March of the Penguins", they are definitely on a roll.  Plus, they are just so cute, how can you resist an awesome image of them from Freezing?  I have a friend that is penguin crazy.  When I was in San Diego last year, I had to photograph every penguin in Sea World just to make him happy :)

Good luck to both of you!

I've heard some people talking about Newdarkroom.com on another forum, but not the other.  I'll see if I can copy/paste the info...

General Stock Discussion / Timing of Holiday shoots
« on: November 18, 2006, 07:10 »
Well, now that Thanksgiving is almost upon us Yanks, Christmas is right around the corner. I see that Holiday shots do very well on places like Shutterstock and I was wondering when everyone plans these types of shoots. Do you yank out the Christmas/Hanukkah decorations and such in June and upload then? Do you wait til October or November, or is already too late by then? What about other holidays? Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween? Do you leave your holiday shots in your portfolio all year long, or do you delete them and upload new the next year?

I am happy to say that just this week I received my first magazine photo shoot. A photo essay for a 'town & country living' magazine. This came about by the editor of the magazine seeing my work in the microstocks.
sooooooooo.... keep at it, you never know where it is going to take you.

Tom, that's so awesome! Congrats!

What a woman! You are beeezzzzzy. I admire you. Go for your dreams! I just turned 43 and now I know what I want to be when I grow up! Why do you think parents ask their kids what they want to be when they grow up....to get ideas :D

Yup, I am pretty busy, but I get lazy too. When I have some free time, I need to have my camera in hand instead of sitting in front of the TV bored out of my mind! LOL, but we all get that way. As for the parent thing, I agree. Too bad when my parents asked me what I wanted to be, it changed every five seconds ;D LOL, still does. Photography is the only constant.

Well, I just started doing the microstock thing in June of this year and things are going very slowly for me now.  But I work full time at an FBO (private airplanes) 3rd shift, and I'm taking college courses to finish my assoc. degree (finally!).  My plan is to learn as much as possible from as many of the great photographers that use this forum, soak up as much knowledge from my photography classes that start in January as possible.  I will continue to upload when I can, but I won't be able to get a really large portfolio going until next year.

I hope to make enough money to get at least one payment from one microstock agency a month in order to suppliment my income and be able to afford some more equipment.  Once I get to that point, I'll set new goals for myself.  But I know that this is what I want after many years at dead-end jobs and no college degree to get me anywhere.  I know I can do this, I just gotta bust my butt to get there  ;D

I'm glad this forum is here!  If you guys wouldn't have told me about this, I don't think I really would have paid any attention to it on istock.  So thanks!!  I did go back and fix a few of my files there.  When I was finished with one file, it would be marked as Manual instead of Auto.  And any files that were uploaded after the change are actually marked as Manual.

I got denied on my first submission to SS too. Actually all 10 were rejected. A few had reasons on them, but most didn't. So I learned what I could from the other sites that I submit to and tracked my sales for a while. the ones that sold the best I took another really critical look at and then just crossed my fingers. I submitted a new batch of ten, which actually had a few from the original batch, and was accepted with 8 out of 10. I now have 42 out of 48 accepted and my sales are consistent, which is the only site they are. So, good luck and keep shooting!
